The last thing I needed to see Danny Elman do is play trombone... *sigh.... only joking. I mean, trombone is probably the sexiest instrument a person can play, but... yeah, he's just my favorite composer. Nothing more haha. Although I also have developed this thing for redheads...
kidAkarma - shouldn't that be "*almost* all the original members left"??? If I remember right, Leon Schneiderman was a member from inception in 1972 ...
I think that's my friend Brad Kay on the piano. I can't see him in this clip, but it sounds like him, and he played in this band at this time (and also in the movie).
C'mon guys, there's no NEED to fight over him... if the guy can handle being a brilliant pop songwriter/performer and composer at the same time, I'm sure he has enough love to go around...
Well, when Danny Elfman was made leader of the band by Richard Elfman, the band had already been together (at around the point of this video) for about 8-9 years. So it's not "all the original members," because even Danny Elfman was not an original member of The Mystic Knights. (by the time the first cd came out that involved Danny Elman other than The Forbidden Zone, it wasn't even called that anymore anyway).
Thanks for sharing these little gems. Didn't he also sing a song that sounded similar in that movie Corpse Bride? Anyway, thanks so much for these awesome clips!!!
now i could very well be wrong (in which case, please forgive me!) but i really don't think that st. james infirmary is originally a cab calloway song. i think it is just kind of an old "folk" song, in the sense that its originator is unknown. again, i could be wrong. nonetheless, this is an amazing video, and mr. elfman (like always) OWNS.
It is an old folk song, but his version of it is very close to the Cab Calloway one, and I always believed that he was covering Cab Calloway rather than just playing the song.
Cab Calloway covered it in 1964. "St. James Infirmary Blues" is an American folksong of anonymous origin, like you said. Louis Armstrong made it famous in his influential 1928 recording, though.
Yes it is what stopped him from performing live :(
A great loss to his fans for sure. At least we can still enjoy his compositions and movie soundtracks. :)
He did one called "Serenada Schizophrana," a formal composition which is lovely!
And if you are in LA/OC, there is a band called "Dead Man's Party" which is a tribute band I have seen lik 7 times and they RAWK! dmplivedotcom check them out!
the performances aren't the best of quality - as in DVD. they are rare footage from the early seventies i believe, so the quality is pretty much an old beaten VHS. :X
This is on the Forbidden Zone DVD?? I need to check my copy again more carefully. I knew the Mystic Knights would perform St James' on occaision live and a performance of it exists in the film Hot Tomorrows, though sadly the craptacular actors keep talking and appearing over the band.
yep, if you actually watch through the documentary in the special features there are a couple mystic knights clips - acapella ditty, finale, st. james, and some others i forget at the moment ;)
I want to go back in time, go to that concert and throw my panties at him!

St.James Infirmary is actually an old Irish song right from Ireland around 1860!
OlymPigs2010 3 years ago
It's not Irish, it's an 18th century (1701-1800, you idiot) English folk song.
