Russia talking to herself: how can we make things nastier in the Artic?? I know, let's build some floating nuclear power plants to power the oil rigs. That should be nasty enough!!
Environmental concerns are important. However one thing forgotten by most commentators is that Russia is getting ahead of all the other nations and is laying the foundations to make territorial claims in the Arctic. They may end up controlling and monopolizing resources there granting an undemocratic autocratic state further power and influence over democratic nations.
Flash! Russia builds first floating nuclear plant in hopes of preventing a Fukushima type disaster! Spokesman relates, "In the event of a quake, no problem! In the event of a tsunami we can surf the wave way inland, & maybe land soft in some trees, or on top of a building..........all in all, we believe it to be fail proof, & the wave, so to speak, of the future! We are very proud to announce also, a.................
@myst1kewl One can see from the sentence put together by you that you have to be illiterate and ignorant not to fear nuclear. The phrase should be" Russia isn't afraid of nuclear like Germany is"
Its not about the land its basically a portable powerhouse. If power is needed for a large area or a city any part of the planet the ship will be able to go there. Thats the idea! its business and all about ways to bring in more moneY!
I think people are confused here, let me summarize, they're not making anything new, this fleet already exist, but due to putin and the oligarchs plundering the finances, they don't have enough money to maintain the fleet anymore, thus this terrible idea of outsourcing the ship's reactors
after killing millions of people with Chenobyl and asking for 100 billion dollars for a new cover to put over the old one that is falling apart because of the still decaying and active melted down fuel Russia wants to mess around with the earth's oceans.Well is just goes to prove that History doesn't teach us anything. History just repeats itself like the human monkeys that keep repeating the refrain of a stupid, deadly business tune that no sane intelligent human would like to listen to.
Tell me, what is supposedly the advantage to making these plants boyant? How is this, in any way, a good idea. We've already got Fukushima poisoning the ocean, and that was without the chance that the whole plant could slip beneath the waves.
Forget a tsunami, all these need is one good iceberg. But I suppose that, like nuclear power itself, they'll claim these ships are unsinkable too.
@jradetzky The sea is dead from overfishing, rising temperatures and acidification due to higher concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere anyways. Why not add some spicy nuke wrecks to top it off!
@myst1kewl Yeah what Russian in his right mind would care is Chernobyl would blow up....oh wait.Russia will screw its self nuclear power is to dangerous now with global warming.
@HDaviator Because they're getting rid of one of the most reliable source of power, meaning they'll have to return to fossil fuels or start buying from neighbouring countries?
They aren't returning to fossil fuels, they are turning towards renewable energy sources, frankly, the way of the future. One country had to step up to the challenge and I take my hat off to Germans for doing this. And as far as Nuclear power being a reliable source of power, that just isn't true. The most reliable source of power is the sun, and taking advantage of that energy is the key.
@HDaviator Nuclear Power might as well be renewable. By the time supplies even drop anywhere close to being dangerously low, if we aren't a space-faring civilization off conquering other planets, we deserve to die.
Ahahahahaha THE SUN IS THE KEY! BEHOOOOLD. The power of something that hides half the day.
Germans are building more coal power plants, and that's a fact. You honestly think German factories will be running on solar and wind? They will use more coal.
Greenpace has already started to complain about that.
Brilliant. Now lets wait for this to turn into a disaster. Make sure you get that ship-reactor close to the Pirates around the African Continent, and sit back for another meltdown.
It's certainly an interesting and novel idea, but as long as they're not anchored in tectonically active parts of the territory, may not be that vulnerable to natural disasters. I'd be more concerned about the prospects of terrorist attacks though - a ship is a smaller and more easily accessible target than a land-based reactor. A lot will also depend on reactor design - it needs to be able to shut down and cool off in minutes if needed, not weeks / months!
@EllyMcCormack For all our sakes i hope it dosen't. I espcialy am fond of seafood, i dont want to see something on my plate glowing green and red(old joke).
@EllyMcCormack Never heard of nuclear powered aircraft carriers or submarines before? These have been around for decades yet you didn't mention them in your comment.
United States, and Russia have nuclear powered ships and Submarines already in use since decades ago so if you are worried that its a new idea, its not!.
@EllyMcCormack It sinks it becomes flooded with sea water. When a nuclear reactor goes wrong one of the best solutions is....... to flood it with sea water.
Next tsunami will be washing nuclear power stations ashore - oh goodie!! THe Russians are demented to come up with something like that!

50 years without any malfunctions?
On July 3rd and 4th is the 50th anniversary of the K-19 nuclear submarine accident.
They've even made a movie out of it "K-19: The Widowmaker"
But I guess that one accident every 50 years is OK though.

Chernobyl on water.
Good, instead of contaminating a single country, this time they've chosen to contaminate a single ocean.
Enjoy your fish while you can.
