I have been singing in Synagogue choirs my entire life and have never heard anything as pure and crisp as this.....absolutely sublime, can listen to the likes of this choir for hours on end..... would love to hear more.....details please !!!
In 1943 the last members of Amsterdam's Portuguese Synagogue choir, Santo Serviço were deported and killed. Now, exactly 60 years later, Santo Serviço has been re-established. Our first public performance was opening the recent Chazzanut Concert: Cantors, a faith in song at the Portuguese Synagogue.
Our opening number, Baruch Habba, was removed from the PBS broadcast in America. Somebody uploaded it recently to YouTube, which you can see here.
Hearing/seeing this gives me chills and tears in my eyes. It actually makes me a little homesick to Amsterdam. Not very good, as I am a Zionist..... But we just don't have things like this in Jerusalem. Thanks for sharing, I can listen to it over and over.
Wow, I thought they were all Freemasons with the hats. Thanks for the explanations. Blessed is he who comes in the name of Adonai, Yehashua haMessiach, Amein.
the Esnoga was built my forebearers, I' m a direct descendant. Top hats were won by men after the bar mitzvah. The Amsterdam rendition of baruch haba has a particular inflection different to the london way of singing this song which is traditionally sung as the bride enters for her wedding
