@MrNotch9 These are not there to stop more cars from going over. The main goal in a big derailment is to get the line opend back up as soon as possible. The destroyed track and cars that are not salvageable are pushed off to the side and at a later date a scrapper will come in and torch the cars into moveable pieces. Sometimes they will sit there for months before being removed.
guy 1 i need u to put thes cars somewhere out of the way 2guy ok 2 i wonder where i can put thes cars think think where can i put them 1hey u need to hury up ther is another train behind you 2 ok hey i know where i will put them at at the side of the track 2 ok i did it 1ok show where did u put them 2 right hear 1 ooooooooooooooo i did not mean that
1put the cars of the track 2 ok i did i will show u 1 i didnot mean like that
@WNxRadeon sometimes the empty cars can act as a rope and when u go up a notch or two it will fall in like that. most likely it was an uphill train that derailed.
@WNxRadeon Think of the garden hose in your yard with a curve in it. When you grab the end of the hose and pull, the curve straightens out. Now think of your train going around a curve. You give the train a jerk from the front end and the train wants to do the same thing as the garden hose...straighten out. Sometimes if you're not a good engineer or just have a bad set of circumstances you might just cause the middle cars to 'climb the rail'. Very simplified explanation
Stringlining. I've actually seen this happen on a model railroad, but basically a car in the middle derailed and the slack action of the train actually caused it to pull all over at once. Really funny when you see it happen, long as no one gets hurt. you can almost hear a "Twang" sound effect.
On the Ohio River at Otter Creek Park in Meade County, Kentucky there's a few hopper cars off the river side of the track, that I believe have been left there to control erosion. I'm not sure if it was an intentional derailment or not. They've been there for decades, and I've climbed on them many times (which isn't difficult.)
chosendude, you definitely have the right explanation for this derailment. It looks steeply banked too. And if the cars were loaded high when it happened, so much the more likely. Were they loaded? Any one know if this was a loaded accident?
Doesn't look like he was speeding to me... cars are on the wrong side of the curve.
It looks like the enigneer didn't have enough speed and instead cranked up the power, causing the tension of the train to pull those cars off the rails around the bend.
If he was going too fast, those cars would've come off the other way.
Pretty much all of them. The priority is to clear the tracks, then they usually contract a metal scrapper to come cut them up, or a dedicated clean-up company like RJ Corman if things are more - complicated.
I worked for NS for about 6 months and there were 2 cars that were at a bend along one of their most populated routes the whole time I was there and sounded like it had been there at least a year!
Railcar repairs can be extremely costly. New trucks and a few minor repairs may end up costing $15k. The car itself may be worth far less than that to buy outright and scrap.
lol, they could've put it there because one flipped and they kept it there to warn people "look what happens when you know you're doing the wrong thing". :)
So, I have to ask, What happens if a speeder break down on an active railway??? can It be carried off in case??? I've never seen one of these but I really would like to take a ride on one!
If you look closly theres a sign on each one saying "oops accident"

@WNxRadeon going from idle to notch 8 with empty cars. saw it happen once as well.
shadow444222 7 months ago
@shadow444222 don't they fall to the outside of the curve then?
(in this case to the left)

Nice view! I work for a tourist railroad and we still use speeders to help with trackwork and hauling ties.

It's incredible. I want to reach out and grab them and place them on the track like they were toy cars.

@RainJetSprinklers they're called speeders, little MOW vehicles track crews drive to work on track points and stuff.

@railcar123 - Over here they're called "section cars" or "motor quads", or sometimes "Fairmonts" after the most popular manufacturer of them.

It's probably not easy to reflip them and bring them back on the track without damaging the landslide or the rail. Dunno.

Many. In many cases they may let them sit there until the price of scrap metal makes cutting them up and selling them worthwhile.
I've seen derailment areas where cars remain on their sides for years and in some cases decades

they dont look to damamged though. new trucks and a few minor repairs and they should be good

When a speeder breaks down, towing is usually the solution, but yes, they can also be set-off the track fairly easily.
SR722 3 years ago
Not sure when it happened, but the track is used daily for freight and a tourist steam train.
greggle01 3 years ago
when did that happen`and is the track still regular?
