its kinda sad because these fish are endangered. the females take 25 years before they start spawning and once they do they only spawn every 3-4 years. its going to take a long time to get the population up and this really isnt helping
@maildabradbass You probably don't realize this, but the sturgeon fishery on the Wolf River system is probably one of the closely watched and highly managed fisheries in the upper midwest. These fish are no where near extinction and if you ask anyone who spears in WI, they will tell you the population is in much better shape than it was just 10-20 years ago. This is all thanks to the dollars brought in by license sales and all the volunteers who watch spawning grounds.
@maildabradbass There are also very conservative quotas set for the male and female sturgeon and when one of these quotas are met, the season automatically ends at the end of the following day. Ron Bruch (WI DNR, biologist) has done wonders with the sturgeon management in this state, one of the very few things the Wisconsin DNR is doing right in this state.
As stated below, it is legal to spear sturgeon in the state of Wisconsin. It is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. About 12,000 people buy tags each year. Fish must be registered each day and once a harvest trigger is hit, the season is closed. If no triggers are hit, the season runs 16 days. Any sturgeon caught throughout the year via hook and line must be released. The population is controlled through spearing.
@DulcetTones do u not realize all the work and time that the wisconsin dnr has put in to bringin these fish back. we have the highest population of lake sturgoen in the lake winnebago and the lake winnebago river system than anywhere in the world. and not only that they only allow like 1800 fish to be harvested. they know what they are doing with that. they are not gona get all killed off
catch and release!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spearing sturgeon? Seems wrong. Very wrong. Sturgeon are not good for eatting.. caviar maybe, and but even I frown upon that.
