  • all these video are same place same suit.. he was on fire that day!!!

  • Excuse me , what was wrong with that ? I tried real hard to find anything less than a classic piece played with style straight from the heart ,but failed. 11 people must have some special insight that is denied me. ( Or they wouldn`t know good music if it bit them on their ass)

  • @ilikezappa yer 11 out of nearly 240 000 ha! makes you wonder what these people hear when they listen to music! Dr John is the real deal. :o)

  • @AcousticMax Well I am sure we could send them a Britney Spears CD if it will make them piss off.

  • @ilikezappa yep wonder if Dr John is lip syncing here ha! :o)

  • @AcousticMax we could dress him up in schoolgirl uniform and get him to sing "do it to me one more time"

    Sorry to spoil your supper...........................

  • My brain just had an orgasm.

  • Thanks for posting this terrific Dr. John video. The sheet music for the piano part on "Pine Top Boogie" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

  • 11 people don't know great music if it bit them in the ass.

  • @DosForbezaPorFavor Oh ,sorry , you just said that. I must stop drinking ( tomorrow)

  • I remember Dr.John when he was just a teenager. He was cool then. You could see he was destined for something big. Cool dude.

  • i love you DR John, in a non homo erotic non masturbatorial fashion, you piano god!

  • How and why could 10 peeps dislike this. 10 folks have no soul.

  • Epic! I'm slowly getting there :)

  • Master blaster Sir John dr's in da house babyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    jjjojojjjnh

  • I was fortunate enough to witness this man's genius in the studio, and at a time when he was in a very bad way healthwise. You watch his hands, you hear what he is doing, but it defies the senses. The shuffle against the straight 4 isn't supposed to work but Mack does it and makes you believe it.

  • Found this a bit confusing; he's top man in Boogy piano,

but I much prefer Neville Dickie's version of Pinetops

    Boogy Woogy

  • daaaaaaaaaamn

  • You can't fake how much he enjoyed playing that -the doc is baad

    Rest In Peace Pinetop.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone else think he looks like Paul McCartney in this video?

  • @owls1122 no.

  • He's cheating. He has a genetic advantage because he's from New Orleans.

  • All I have to say is Daaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmnn

  • Nolafunk is really excited to have Dr. John & the Lower 911 perform 2 rare intimate shows in NYC.... March 4th and 5th. DONT MISS IT!

  • This man's got Soul!

We need more of this Soul in our music!

  • @MrSmackdab JB would be an insult to this legend

  • @MrSmackdab Kidding, right?

  • @istvanklein Um - yes; that would be kidding. LOL

Think I was high at the time :)

  • @MrSmackdab Thought so... Never heard a single tune from this Justin Bieber kid but it is a tragedy how music has degenerated from the Doc and the likes to where it is now...

  • FINALLY being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. About time!

  • Wowowowowowowowowwow go Dr, John... had tickets about thirty years ago to see him at a small guitar shop in Los Angeles and he did not show...... Saw him on IMUS last year or so and HE IS something...... Thanks for posting this......

  • There's more music in that left hand alone than in the whole of the charts today

  • I was lucky enough to see Pinetop Perkins and this version does him proud! I've seen Dr. John twice, and he didn't play enough of this kind of music. Love his piano playing. He's one of the very greatest. Thanks for posting this!

  • DR John has forgotten more than I'll ever know......

  • DJ is tops but to see the worlds best boogie barrelhouse player look at Gene Taylor

  • @attractioncreation rock came outta the blues so i have no doubt your hearin some of those bass lines, this is where they came from

  • when a long time pal told me mac was doing pine top i thought he was talking about Joe "willie" pinetop perkins, muddys piano player after Otis span---you learn something new everyday! the dr. still bad ass.

  • WOW!!!!!!!! Sounds like he has four hands!!

  • @LynneGo this is Cow Cow Blues variation .It is not The Pinetop Boogie.

  • @1andycowan

shut up it still is the best boogie ever

  • @1andycowan Have you ever listened to Frankie Ford's Roberta or Huey Smith's Loberta?

It's definitely not the traditional Pinetop's Boogie by Clarence "Pinetop" Smith and I don't know where this version originates from. Certain licks are frequently "borrowed" by other pianists... But it is still a great tune!

  • @omegeert

I recognized quite a few of the licks as being from "Hamp's Boogie" (Lionel Hampton)

  • HAHA! I heard of this song in a comic (Chuckle Bros.) and had youtube up so i looked it up, and now i love it! lol =) He is mabye the best ive ever heard

  • Zowie! The doctor is IN THE HOUSE...and he's playing boogie at it's best! THANKS for posting this amazing clip! If the good doctor was any more cool, he'd be frozen! Stricly from wowsville, daddy-o!!! CHEERS! :-)

  • wowowowowooooooooooowwwwwwww can you give me the score??

  • No disrespect, young man, but you're aways away from Pinetops Boogie w/this version Beanicus

  • boogie, baby, boogie!

  • holla crap boy you cane tickle dose ivories !

  • I'm heard a little bidda striiiide in that theya boogie boy....

  • no one is better than Dr. John. period. he's got a little of dis, dat, and da uddah

  • Wheres mama roux

  • you are so amazing. i love the way you play.

and love to see that you look enjoy what you do :)

  • This doctor gives me the best medicine!!

  • how can people dislike this?!?!?!?!

  • amazing. love it.

  • he is the master of this kind of music. I am glad to have seen him live in performance twice. Long live the good Dr.

  • Pull the other one, Doctor, this ain't Pinetop's, this is a copy of James Booker's playing. But since you guys were probably neighbours, hard to say who was copying whom.

  • Full on.

  • He has a sense of rhythm that no one else can get near. Yeah, I'll aver to the fact that he just had sex with that piano! Dude is f*in' brilliant. I'd like to spend about a year with him soaking up his talent.

  • He just had sex with that piano and i thoroughly enjoyed watching.

  • @omwhite83 well put.

  • BRILLIANT.

  • Now THAT'S boogie - go Mac!

  • I WANT TO MEET THIS MAN

  • This is Roberta by Frankie Ford.

  • He adds a great vocal on to this very arrangement and calls it "Sick and Tired." You can get it on Itunes. He plays it on a crappy little Yamaha electric grand from the Disco days. (CD's called "By Hisself") They were dreadful pianos but Dr. J rocks it.

I know what the posters mean about this not being PT's Boogie. they're not nitpicking - that's an entirely different song. Maybe Dr. J was a little high this day. Gotta love the playing, though - Eb!!! Skinny spaces and little keys....Whoa!

  • yeah, that track is amazing. one of the dr's best

  • difference between pinetop smith and pinetop perkins ...

  • Just epic! love the sound of those chords blending in with whaterver he's doin lol

  • man he kills it right at a minute in

  • Pine Top.....all right!

  • not only he talks like a black man he also plays like one!

  • maybe because he is black? or at least half

  • you are right brother. he is black but looks white hahaha that is true!!!

  • Huey Smith also did a fine vocal version called "Lo-berta"...

  • Any sussed out exactly the LH pattern he is using?

  • Look at how his hands move!!! It's incredible. I'm also a pianist.

  • only 1 of about 50 million, it dosnt take a genious 2 figure that 1, but points 4 trying

  • I saw the Dr. open for Boz Scaggs in San Francisco years ago at the Greek outdoors. Tell you what! A hard act to follow and he was solo.

  • I will tell all, after listening to the Doc,Meade,Ammonds, and rollem Pete(mite member him from Big Joe fame)some piano boogie woogie just rolls to differernt folks versions of same songs.I've heared 10 diff versions of Pinetop boogie by the same artist.Shit, how many versions John Lee Hooker got of Boogie Chillen. How many versions of a song is too much. Not for me to tell.Hell,Jerry Lee had a dozen versions of Lotta Shakin,Great Balls,at the High School Hop,I'm on fire, thats left him Breathless.

  • Personally, I don't care what it's called or who wrote it. I'll leave that to those more knowledgeable than I. I just LOVE IT!

  • Let's just say it the good ol' Doc's version. And enjoy it.

  • Far be it from me to disagree with Mac Rebennack, who is after all one of the foremost experts on this style of music, but he's got the wrong Smith there... that's not Pinetop Smith, it's Huey Smith. (That roll is the intro to Frankie Ford's "Roberta", which had one of the most famous B-sides in history, "Sea Cruise".)

  • This is NOT Pinetop Boogie Woogie!!!!!!

  • why?

  • Listen to the original on youtube and you ll see that it is a loose arrangement played too fast . It is good but !!!!

  • I can't belive there are people on here typing who is better than this guy. Dr. John is from New Orleans, people. There are piano players out there who can imitate, but Dr. John grew up around this music, and he is the real deal!!!

  • What about all the pianists from Europe ?

  • @RetroJenny As you say..many can imitate. Only true musicians like Dr. John here know WHY they play each note, and this is what puts their playing on a whole other level.

  • If every version of this song was recorded exactly the same way by every musician, we would be doomed to boredom. Dr. John infused the song with his own style. The ability to improvise and stylistically alter a song is what separates the average hack pianist from true artists like Dr. John.

  • JTVideo2009 (1 Sorry guy but Technically nothing. It is not any rendition of Pinetops Bogie. It's a boogie but it's not Pinetops, which he claims it to be. He plays great I'm going to take that away from him. But when you say "here's Pine Tops Boggie" then by golly play it like Pine Top not your version of a Boggie.

  • yeah after too week s work i can play it !

    blues for ever!!!!

  • Guys great BUT that's not Pine Tops Boogie!!

  • True, Dominick, and he lacks Pinetop's subtlety, but those pudgy hands look like they belonged to Meade Lux Lewis.

  • Main thing bout the "Night Tripper" apart from his amazing touch is that he was or maybe still is "the coolest guy on earth"

Only thing better than listening to him talk is listening to him play!

  • He's a great piano player...but this AIN'T Pinetop's Boogie.

  • technically it is, just a different arrangement. ala new orleans

  • nope, technically it isn't, except for the breaks

but even these are very different

  • I've always heard this as Pinetop Perkins

  • No! u c there are two "Pinetops", Perkins, as u say, and Smith. This is by Pinetop Smith. His first name was Clarence.

  • It's Dr John's ass kickin version of Pinetop Smith's Boogie. I spent my honeymoon in New Orleans just to hear music like this. Although I did not, as it was mostly big brass jazz (which was cool), be glad you can see Dr John at his best with material like this. No piano player cannot love hearing Dr John, Bob Seeley, Axl Zwinginberger, JP Bertrand, Joja Wendt, or any of the originals....Pinetop Smith, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, or my favorite, Meade Lux Lewis....to name a few

  • anybody got dr. john's video "y don't we all watch television ?" also playing and singing "little liza jane" and "sick and tired" ?

bring it on !! great posting !!

  • I was given the sheets for this - at least the bulk of what he is playing is "Tell Me How Do You Feel" from "The James Booker Collection." Words and music by Percy Mayfield and Ray Charles. I definitely prefer Dr. John's version though!

  • Fantastico,!!! 1000 gracias por compartirlo conmigo AMIGA 5***** para ti , 5 ***** Maddermofo

    y 5***** para el pianista.

  • Amazing how quiet and light his hands are on the keys... for all that racket!

  • Hope you can try my playlist with (presently) 18 BW:s including 2 with Dr. John.

  • add &fmt=18 to the URL for better quality.

  • Sylvan Zingg and Jools Holland also belong to the group of clever BW players. Just like Dr. John is excellent. My only point is that there are a handful of BW players in the world who all have real quality and it seems unnecessary to boil that down to one individual. Just enjoy them all instead!

  • OK.

I admit that many players like Silvan or Zwingenberger are good. They can play very fast and it looks/sounds very fancy/wow.

However, you can't deny the groove and amazing feel that Dr. John makes on the piano. Now, for technicalities, James Booker owns!

Listen to some James Brown/Lloyd Glenn. That's impressive composing!

  • Part 3:

Here are other names you can try (besides those already mentioned below):

J-P Amoureux, J-P Bertrand, Tommy Blohm, Hans Henrik Grønsleth, Luca Sestak, Axel Zwingenberger, Jim Hession (I suggest his version of High Heel sneakers to begin with), Tommy Johnson Carl Sonny Leyland & Adam Swanson. Some of these only have BW as a minor part of their repertoire but they are still doing it well. There are more good BW:s played by others as well. I apologize to those not mentioned.

  • Part 2:

Reply to biltom's posting 3 months ago (don't know why Part 1 and probably also this part end up here):

There are other contexts as well including the type of instrument they use - its tuning - and so on. Therefore it seems strange to argue about "the best" - just enjoy any of these talents according to your preferences. Perhaps you should even take their age into your judgement.

  • yep, the doctor is great : somone made a typo on the title : as cstrange said, yes , that is the great James Bookers " how do you feel" still great though !

  • ok, now thats THE REAL THING whoo wee!

    Reminds me of my ute!

  • New Orleans feeling and soul replaced the typical Pinetop Boogie

  • It has little to nothing to do with Pinetop's Boogie Woogie.

  • I'll agree !! This is not Pinetops Boogie woogie.

He does play a good boogie though.

  • That's not 'Pine top's boogie'

  • Bakunin of the boogie world !

  • Wow!!! You play Boogie like I play Honky-Tonk!!! Fantastic!!!!!!

  • nobody can deal like the doctor!

  • The good doctor shuffles the shit out of that boogie!

  • the doctor is in brothers!

  • i think i just came in my pants

  • Just because Zing plays it faster doesn't make it better, or even harder.

Dr John's version has way more musicality, and the syncopation he uses makes it much harder than the Zing version.

  • Right on. Zing ain't got no muthafuckin mojo... and he never will.

  • moron

  • anyone know where i can get the notes for this on the net? - for free

  • good, but not even close to Slyvan Zing's version...but Slyvan is the best ever at playing the boogie style piano....

  • Zing isnt from new orleans...

  • What has that got to do with anything....Zing has more talent on the piano, regardless where he lives....hell, there are people that actually like living on the left coast in San Fran Sissyco...go figure...

  • Zing doesnt have the new orleans sound.. if you cant identify the diffrence between someone who studies the style, and someone who grows up where it is still played..you cant critque anybody's playing. what makes Zing so good? he doesnt sound better than anyone, just cause he does a big show in europe doesnt make him the best. go listen to Matt Ball, or Eeco R. or even Bob Seeley

  • I know they have different styles as well as different levels of ability...it is easy to see and hear....Zing is not my favorite piano player, but he by far is superior to Dr John, Professor Longhair or these style players...

  • "by far superior to Dr. John" is the funniest quote I read in years. that's a mission impossible. lol

  • nothing funny about it...just a fact...it's called talent.

  • did naybody say your boyfriens doesn't have talent? Please read better before comment.

  • go away boy, you bother me.......

  • reality is hard sometimes. I know.

  • unless your boyfriend is jools holland or was ray charles there is no one else who can even come close to his playing.

  • or albert ammons or pete johnson or meade lux lewis

  • LOL too right!!!

  • @hottownband nuhhhmm.... "superior to doctor john..." you sure that wasn't a typo? I mean, maybe he was confused and he mixed up a couple words...

  • @hottownband Never heard Tuts Washington or Professor Longhair, eh?

  • @fairportfan2 Did you ever see the video "Piano Players Never Play Together." ? It features 'Fess, Tuts and Allen Toussaint rehearsing for a big show - then 'Fess up and dies and the documentary shifts to cover his funeral. Great film and musical tribute.

  • @1blastman Oh, yeah - love it.

  • @1blastman Where is this available, I would like to see it.

  • @Gary198101 Try this youtube link - the title is "Piano Players Rarely Play Together. " I typed it in and got a link to it.

It features Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint and Tuts Washington. [I tried to post the link and I got an error message]. Try the Lousiana Music Factory -google.

If you want to hear the greatest New Orleans piano player ever - give James Booker a listen. Even Dr. John recognizes Booker as being the greatest of the great N'Awlins piano players.

    He is special.

  • @biltom Why bother listening to Dr. John then? Pianists like Dr. John and Professor Longhair have more soul in their pinky fingers than Zing has in his whole body. Zing is a showman who can imitate. Did he create a style of his own like Professor Longhair? I don't think so!

  • Part 1:

Besides all your misspellings of Zingg's name and where the musicians come from the whole discussion is silly. There are about one dozen of individuals who have great boogie woogies posted on YouTube. These in turn have different overall musical orientations - some play classical music as well - some do not. Others are more oriented towards ragtime, blues or jazz.

  • so I didnt spell Silvan's name right, so what....he is the best at boogie style piano playing any way you spell his name. I think this is silly too, yet you continue as I have, why? As Rhett Butler said, "Frankly.....you know the rest.

  • Hmm apparently not.. Thought I'd heard this version before somewhere else.. Not a lot of the original Pinetop's Boogie Woogie in it..

  • Isn't it "Big Chief??"

  • I learnt a lot through these two fantaztic videos he did in the early 90s with HomespunTapes. This one is in the key of Eb, amazingly difficult to play....

Some may find more "virtuoso" or fast boogieplayers, but no one can match Dr John's feel, intensity, Blues drenched sound....and he plays so laid back and relaxed! WOW

  • He is the Dr. in that he is the best white man you have ever heard singing the blues. (Sorry Eric Clapton).

Dr. John was born with it and continues, despite the trials. And I thank him for it.

  • no he doesn't cut people open.

All the great Boogie/rag player make names for them selves.

eg Professor Longhair i don't think he has a Phd

  • Hes a Docter for real?

  • Great try, still, no hard feelings, Silvan Zing's version is way beter.

  • Killer! I've seen him in concert twice. Once at the Troubador in Hollywood circa 1975 and once in Nashville in the early 90's. He's just as sweet at pie.

  • thats james booker's tell me how do you feel! def not pinetops boogie! still bad ass tho

  • dayum you good.

    better than jools

  • Great "Pine Top Boogie" by Dr. John. It makes me want to go back and take up my piano lessons again. Dr. John looks so comfortable playing this and makes it look easier than it is. Thanks for the video maddermofo. - Paula
