Hello I have I commented alot on youtube and I have strong opinions and the main ones are about homelessness.
@KIDNAPPEDKITTIES2 I must respectfully say that at one point and time in the very near future we are all across the world going to be asking ourselves one question. Where will we sleep and eat?? Even if you have a great job and a place to live which you have been for years. Count every blessing cause it might not be there tomorrow. OPEN YOUR EYES EVERYONE!
Quack factories like PARKDALE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE create homelessness by antagonizing clients and turning them off supports. They merely process people, like so much meat.
In May of 2010 the Conservative government announced a bill to essentially eliminate pardons, in favour of more narrowly defined "criminal record suspensions," thereby making it much harder for people convicted of a serious crime to be granted a pardon
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews
says the government wants
criminals to pay for the
administrative costs
of a Canadian Pardon
Please keep in mind that over 70% of homeless people now have a criminal record....Insane Politics....
Some people are disabled and unable to get employment. ODSP does not pay enough for food, a place to stay and medication not covered by ODB. Some may become homeless. If one is homeless, ODSP further reduces the amount of money given. Some people were brought up with abusive parents or neglect. We do not chose to be disabled or be born to an abusive family.
you have opened up my eyes even more, your completely inspiring Melissa. Thank you so much for this upload. You have made me more insightful on my project/assignment on Poverty in Toronto. Thank you once again, changes definitely need to be made. I wonder what could be the first step in getting our Prime Minister and Government to take action....
This is a wonderful channel!! I can relate to the issue of homeless. My good friend Jesse is currently homeless. He is a poet. This is actually his account I am on right now and I have taken control of it to rally support for him while he is out there. We have shot videos to document his experiences. I am sick to my stomach everyday with worry for him and am terrified he will not make it through the soon approaching harsh Canadian winter. Please people never look down on a homeless person!
a lot of times drugs and smokes are cheaper than food. most drugs curb the appetite and you dont have to suffer feeling hungry eating once a day. stop taking drugs and smoking, you are hungry all the time and depressed
@MrYpres i dont do drugs are u fucking stupid im pregnant for fucks sakes !!! im not the type of person to kill a living thing inside of me . and its ppl who tell me EVERY FUCKING DAY to either get a job or to close my legs. i have had severe depression since i was 14 and cannot afford the medication. and ppl like u dont really help by automatically assuming im a druggie. so why dont u fuck off and HELP rather than hurt??
@MrYpres well ur " doubt " is 100% WRONG!!! im a 19 year old woman whos homeless and when ppl see ANY homeless person they AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME were either druggies, alcoholics or both. so they decide to NOT HELP. u seem like the immature one wanting to cause shit.
@MrYpres u wanna pay for my id?? mine got stolen in my sleep and cops laughed in my face cuz of it. as for housing u gotta PROVE ur homeless. like wtf?!?!? im gonna get the sidewalk square to sign a piece of paper roflmao.
@babygurl1422 go to john howard society, salvation army,, or a church,, fuk, i live on fawk too,, in case you didnt read my other posts, you dont know how to steal scrap metal? here's a trade secret,, find something sellabe and sell it on craigs list and kijiji, fuck do i have to do the thinking for you? learn to hussle im going out to find money for my next meal right now
@MrYpres lolz im BANNED from those places cuz im not a christian ( im wiccan ) and im also NOT a THIEF . dont have a criminal record and dont plan on getting one either. i panhandle for my money. nuff said.
@babygurl1422 you are a LIAR because almost all chuches give away vouchers for groceries no matter what religion you are. even a muslim mosque will give you one. you have been caught in a lie, it is natural for people to steal if they are hungry enough. DO NOT MESSAGE ME AGAIN YOU FUCKING LOON
@MrYpres actually im not a fucking liar u fucking asshole . i am not a thief never have never will be . and if u dont want me messaging u then just block me. no wait ur too much of a FUCKING ASSUMPTION PERSON. TO KNOW THAT.
rent is not "so high" as this vid proclaims. that was true 10 years ago but is a myth now. it has been going down as apartment vacancies have been going up for years. The rate of pay has remained almost the same for over a decade, that is the scary part. Unemployment is up in recent years.
Laws need to be passed to bring back institutional care and make people work for welfare. Some just aren't fit to take care of themselves for one reason or another or choose not to.
@Auscann in 2000 my rent was a mere 525 dollars a month( i say mere because of what it is now)........now in 2011 my rent is 800 dollars a month...so how can you say that rent is not increasing????
Very touching....living in Toronto, I have seen some of these folks on city streets and although I have don't much to spare, I do my best to spare some change, buy an extra sandwich or even just a coffee. There but for the grace of God go I. As for market rents, I make a good living however I spend 50% of my net income on housing. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to choose between a roof over my head or feeding my child. Thank you for posting.
@baciandrio I am so surprised that a Canadian admits that they have homeless in their country. Visiting Canadians to the States always deny that Canada has homeless. Lately, some of these lofty Canadians have gone so far to claim that Canadians never become ill. Some people here in the States are stupid enough to believe these Canadian claims, but most of those people aren't the cream of our crop. They are people who want welfare and foodstamps.
@maybetuesday1790 Yes we do have homeless and in the area I live in there are very few here compared to downtown. Perhaps the party or parties who have been stating that we have no homeless people must live in the middle of farm country? Every country in the world has homeless....Anyone who denies it is lying to themselves in order to ease their guilty consciences.
@maybetuesday1790 I've never met a canadian who believes canada has no homeless. they must either be in denial, lying because of unfounded superiority or just plain ignorant. Canadian homelessness differs from that in the US. We have a welfare system that will keep you afloat if you are willing to budget properly and make necessary sacrafices like moving to a cheaper area or letting go of your car. There are a lot of spoiled people here who won't help themselves and then become "homeless"
hello everyone im a pregnant homeless woman in toronto. i am 5 months pregnant and i am on the internet through a library on yonge and bloor. i do not know when my next meal will be and i have no friends or family that will help me out. i beg for my money with a sign that says " 5 months pregnant and homeless please spare what u can thank you very much " making very little in 4 hours of sitting on the cold cement with severely ripped jeans ( the inside thighs on both sides are ripped to the ass
@babygurl1422 you should either get a job or train for a job so you can start supporting yourself. you will need to support that kid in future instead of sitting on the cold cement with rip assed jeans and begging. btw.. why on earth did you get pregnant without having the financial means to support a child? unless you were raped that is totally irresponsible. the number one requirement of a parent is being responsible. get a job and become responsible instead of pleading for sympathy.
@Auscann i am now 8 months pregnant and cannot get a job due to a severe spine problem called scoliosis. as for getting pregnant the guy who did this to me kicked me out in the middle of a blizzard when he found out cuz he just " got tired of me " i had no transportation , and no food or money to get anywhere ttc wouldnt allow me on for free even tho i was prego and there was a HUGE blizzard out. so i had to walk from warden and st.clair all the way to covenant house on yonge and gerrard . .
1. scoliosis is a very common ailment. you manage to communicate on you tube so you can get a job where you work on a computer in some capacity, maybe use the phone..
2. "the guy who did this to me" = "the guy who I chose to father my child"
3. why choose such a loser to father your child?
4. why did you leave yourself in a position where you had no food, money, transport?
5. why should ttc be free for you?
I hope that long walk gave you some clarity. Quit playing the victim
@Auscann 1. not without grade 12 besides the job industry dont take well to ppl who cannot afford id or do not have a full education. ( both of which COSTS MONEY to get nowadays ) 2. actually he pretty much DID rape me just toronto pigs are so fucked he made them believe his story leaving me to fend for myself. 3. i had him on my facebook as a friend for the longest time and he was ok and even his friends said he was " an awesome person to be around " 4. HES the one that kicked me out.
@babygurl1422 osap is very easy to get, i have the worst credit in the world and i got it,, but if you have a criminal record,, good luck,, only karla hamoka can get one
@Auscann 4. actually i was told that if anything did happen ( he kicked me out or i walked out ) that i was to get money/tokens for bus fare or food. 5.when ur homeless u cannot afford bus fare to get to places especially if panning ( begging ) is really shitty due to the weather or ppl just not being nice . as for the long walk u must be really fucked in the head cuz i could have DIED due to hypothermia or frostbite and no one would have cared.
@Auscann Sorry i was not serious just being a smartass. It was a snide remark for a couple of dishonest Canadians that just got caught collecting from Social Services.I believe anyone who begs on the sidewalk is lazy & needs to get off their ass & look for a j-o-b.Plenty of work if you really want to live honestly & not depend on the people or government to pay your way in life & d nothing to help yourself.
@KIDNAPPEDKITTIES2 LOL. that's funny, i guess i didn't read enough comments. I compleetely agree. We are a very spoiled nation with a sense of entitlement. not much to look forward too if we keep going in that directin
Easy for you to say from your living room chair. If you were sexually or physically abused as a child, if you grew up poor in a tough neighbourhood, if you couldn't focus on school or an education because you were merely just trying to make your way and survive, and as a result you had no qualifications so even getting an entry level job is impossible, you would be singing a very different tune about the homeless.
@BloggerMusicMan Nothing in my life has been "easy". I was a single mother with a son from a deadbeat father who drank all his money & abused me.I never collected welfare or took the lazy way out.I got a job, made a career & paid my own way with hard work.Anyone who makes excuses for problems in their life is looking for sympathy.I always look foward ,never back.Proud of myself & my son today as we are both productive citizens. But for some people it's just easier to use the system, shame on them!
There's no way I can verify if your story is true, but I'll assume it is.
1) Nothing in your story mentions abuse as a child. Did you already have a high school diploma when you became a mom or did you later get one? Did your caretakers abuse you? A lot of homeless people are teenage runaways from abusive homes, and it makes a difference whether or not the abuse came as a child or later as an adult. An adult can deal better, and your childhood helps set up your life.
@BloggerMusicMan My childhood was living with 2 alcoholics who tormented each other daily. It was like living in a war zone.I ran away from home @ 15 & found myself in worse conditions. Most people wallow in their bad situations, blaming their childhoods but I had a baby to take care of & never looked back.I read that your only 19 but you sound wise beyond your years.I'll bet your only worry is what xbox game to choose, lol.Only kidding! Enjoy your childhood. And wear a condom .Volunteer your time.
To me wisdom suggests experience, which you're right I have little of, but I like to listen to people who've had it. Thanks for the advice and the discussion. I wish you the best of luck.
2) Correct me if I'm wrong, but you also seem to be of sound mental health, which is not an advantage a lot of the homeless have, and that is a serious obstacle to getting off the street.
3) Even as it stands, I applaud you for getting your life back together. You seem like you've had a harder life than I do or probably will. But that still gives you no right to make condescending and overused generalizations about huge groups (millions in this case) of people.
@KIDNAPPEDKITTIES2 dude, im homeless, and honestly, not having to work, its hard to get a job, when youve panhandled outside stores, then goin to apply for a job, its harder then you think man, you gonna give me a job? didnt think so, so shut your mouth
@wiccachick55555 ...Sorry to hear that your homeless.Life is hard enough without having that problem. Can't be safe for a young girl like you being on the street.Any unemployment office offers free training & job referrals.Maybe your not finding a job because of your attitude ? Good luck to you. You'll need it !
Your right, this song has become the unofficial anthem for anything sad int he world.....but about the homeless in North America, fo the unemployed ones who never took education seriously, it's your own fault, but for theothers who got layed off or are in low-income jobs, I understand your situation.
i feel so sorry for the homeless people in canada, because of people being abused, neglected, financially troubled, etc. i believe many homeless people want a second chance by trying to apply for a job. we should give them that chance first! and then support them in anyways, food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc.
, i have scoliosis, lordosis deterrating disc disease and was denied odsp,, some days i take 24 pain meds a day so i can tolorate school, but i am under threat that i will be cut off welfare and wont be able to complete it, i starve 2 weeks a month because i cannot get canned food from the food bank home and welfare seems to think that living off 100 dollars for basic needs is enough
@Auscann I just finished my upgrading in adult ed, iv been eccpeted in every college i applied for but i have 1 criminal charge from when i was 18. Even though the school accepted me the required field work has to check for records and i can not take the risk of not passing b/c of it. i also owe a lot of fines and cant get a pardon until they are paid. its funny how life works, karla hamoka will probably get a pardon before me lol. sry for all the deleted posts 4am, made a lot of mistakes
@MrYpres It sounds like you are going in the right direction by studying. You will eventually get there. I have a lot of respect for people who help themselves. What will you do to work around this?
I was a self mutilating homeless junkie, living on the streets of Toronto for years, thankfully Youth For Christ's "Light Patrol" reached out in love & brought me to a place where I could change my life Freedom Village U.S.A in NY... there is hope & help for those who want it
I work for a program that does outreach with homeless individuals. I would love to get a copy of this if you would share it. Please contact me through You Tube.
Homelessness is not just about addicts/alcoholics or plain laziness. It does include the people who do have mental illnesses or are disabled or persons who have lost their employment and literally have no where else to turn. I think people in this world should open their eyes.
I live in a social housing slum and starve on ODSP..this is my punishment for having MS!
I don't expect to be rewarded for being disabled ,but I can tell that at most times I cannot separate my disease from the horrible conditions I am forced to live with. Many of the homeless have been where I am now and have ran back to the streets.
This is my personal invitation to any reader to come and see for yourself how "goverment assistance" disables me more than any disease ever could!
@tenant76 I know a guy with ms who has been working in a well paid job for 20 years. he bought himself a condo 10 years ago and has always had a really swanky scooter and seems to be doing well for himself. I asked him how he did it and he said he trained for the job and just kept applying and eventually got one. This is a far better alternative to feeling glum because the system isn't doing enough for you.
It is indeed a serious problem, like someone said, drugs, sex, are liked, and what I see the most challenge work is to persuade someone to quit, it is very powerless problem and feeling, if the person doesnt want to change at all, you can do everything in the world, and wont work! Which it is better to start thinking where this problem begins! our family! childhood!, overall it is better to be preventive than regrettable.
why dont they blame ontario works caseworkers demeaning comments and crazy requirements to get welfare, they are making it harder to get on welfare some of these people would not be hired for mental health reasons and other language barriers so living on the street is not always wanted its bullying off welfare doing it.
Keep up the great work! I returned to Canada from being overseas for a long time. I was shocked to see what is happening in Canada - and even more shocked at the silence and apathy!
im wondering what kinda dagree john has and how he knows so much about what everyone "thinks they know" regardless why these ppl. are on the street they still need help. drug addicts need help as u know, its a long road to recovery ..even more so if they are dealing with cold assH0les who cause them to relap
You are dead wrong about the shelters Toronto has enough space for the homeless, they problem is they don't want to go to the shelters. Your point about rent prices and minimum wage leading to homelessness is dead wrong. I am guessing you are in a social service course with a community college, get out while you can. Those people know nothing of the problem and their solutions have only led to more homeless.
I have spent decades working with the homeless and it isn't an easy problem. Many young kids run away from home because they don't like Daddy's rules & they can make $200 per day pan handling. They go to Covenant House which is a nice shelter. They end up being drug addicts and when they become an adult they end up at Seaton House which isn't as fun. The homeless problem is really a drug & alcohol problem that you must address first or you are wasting your time.
New York took action to clean up the homeless problem and it worked very well. Toronto needs to get much tougher on these bums by following new York's example.
I watched your videos about losing weight. Girl, you are a perfect, sensitive, caring and wonderful human being just the way you are. Please give yourself a big hug from me!
Homelessness in Canada is at an all time high. There is no cause for this. Canada is a wealthy country. Something needs to be done about this crisis. There is something wrong when we are outraged by animals left outside in the cold but we don't do anything about human beings.. (just a comparision not suggesting cruelty to animals.) People need to wake UP! Great job Melissa
There are many causes actually. And saying that we don't do anything about the human beings left out in the cold is ludicrous. This city offers numerous resources for the homeless. Not saying they're all perfect, but if you take a closer look at the real problem you begin to see that not every homeless person wants to get off the street, or stop using drugs, or salvage what's left of their lives. It is sad! I'm not being insensitive. I know that this isn't the case with everyone....

@KIDNAPPEDKITTIES2

@KIDNAPPEDKITTIES2

You'll need it !

i feel so sorry for the homeless people in canada, because of people being abused, neglected, financially troubled, etc. i believe many homeless people want a second chance by trying to apply for a job. we should give them that chance first! and then support them in anyways, food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc.

, i have scoliosis, lordosis deterrating disc disease and was denied odsp,, some days i take 24 pain meds a day so i can tolorate school, but i am under threat that i will be cut off welfare and wont be able to complete it, i starve 2 weeks a month because i cannot get canned food from the food bank home and welfare seems to think that living off 100 dollars for basic needs is enough

@MrYpres It sounds like you are going in the right direction by studying. You will eventually get there. I have a lot of respect for people who help themselves. What will you do to work around this?

Which it is better to start thinking where this problem begins! our family! childhood!, overall it is better to be preventive than regrettable.
munekita76 3 years ago
why dont they blame ontario works caseworkers demeaning comments and crazy requirements to get welfare, they are making it harder to get on welfare some of these people would not be hired for mental health reasons and other language barriers so living on the street is not always wanted its bullying off welfare doing it.

im wondering what kinda dagree john has and how he knows so much about what everyone "thinks they know" regardless why these ppl. are on the street they still need help. drug addicts need help as u know, its a long road to recovery ..even more so if they are dealing with cold assH0les who cause them to relap
chill1379 3 years ago
You are dead wrong about the shelters Toronto has enough space for the homeless, they problem is they don't want to go to the shelters. Your point about rent prices and minimum wage leading to homelessness is dead wrong. I am guessing you are in a social service course with a community college, get out while you can. Those people know nothing of the problem and their solutions have only led to more homeless.
JohnPurvis 3 years ago
I have spent decades working with the homeless and it isn't an easy problem. Many young kids run away from home because they don't like Daddy's rules & they can make $200 per day pan handling. They go to Covenant House which is a nice shelter. They end up being drug addicts and when they become an adult they end up at Seaton House which isn't as fun. The homeless problem is really a drug & alcohol problem that you must address first or you are wasting your time.

At least someone sees the true light. Thank you for posting.

New York took action to clean up the homeless problem and it worked very well. Toronto needs to get much tougher on these bums by following new York's example.

Great job Melissa
thespiritualplace 4 years ago
There are many causes actually. And saying that we don't do anything about the human beings left out in the cold is ludicrous. This city offers numerous resources for the homeless. Not saying they're all perfect, but if you take a closer look at the real problem you begin to see that not every homeless person wants to get off the street, or stop using drugs, or salvage what's left of their lives. It is sad! I'm not being insensitive. I know that this isn't the case with everyone....
