Not aYankees fan but a big Goose fan. Don't know what the hell has kept him out of the Hall, but Wikipedia says he'll be in in 2008, so theres hope, he only missed by 21 votes last time.
I think this tells us all what has kept him out of the Hall.
The Hall shouldn't be a simple popularity contest but that's really what it is. You can have the numbers but if the writers don't like you they'll never vote you in. Goose is just being punished because he wouldn't kiss up to them, not because he isn't a worthy inductee. Same thing with Rice. I'm not 100% sure of his merit but there's not doubt he's being held back because the treated the media with utter contempt.

Not aYankees fan but a big Goose fan. Don't know what the hell has kept him out of the Hall, but Wikipedia says he'll be in in 2008, so theres hope, he only missed by 21 votes last time.

I think this tells us all what has kept him out of the Hall.
The Hall shouldn't be a simple popularity contest but that's really what it is. You can have the numbers but if the writers don't like you they'll never vote you in. Goose is just being punished because he wouldn't kiss up to them, not because he isn't a worthy inductee. Same thing with Rice. I'm not 100% sure of his merit but there's not doubt he's being held back because the treated the media with utter contempt.

Call me naive, but I had enough hope in humanity that The Egomaniacs running the HoF could put the personal stuff aside and ATTEMPT some objectivity. Goose didn't violate rules like Rose did. He clearly didn't kiss anyone's ass. That's not a reason to be kept out of the HoF.

Well, I think maybe the writers have let him suffer enough. Me thinks the Class of 2008 will be Gossage, Blyleven, and Rice. Now Rice is another one who wasn't nice to the press, and another one they've let go on and on without the vote. He's gotta get in, they're just making him wait.

I don't think this tirade by itself could have kept Gossage out of the Hall of Fame. George Brett is in the Hall of Fame, and some of the rants he went on made Gossage sound like a saint here.
Gossage will get in though, as time passes and we see how he compares to the other relievers of his time.

Man' I remember hearing about this years ago, but I never actually hear what he said. That's pretty powerful and just might have kept him out of the Hall. They factor character into their decision making. This is the way The Boss made people feel back in the 80's. George has been better for it but too bad for Goose. One of my favorites. Yeah, Goose was awesome! He was like a God to me! I was six years old when I first saw him pitch. My dad used to carry on and on about how fast he could pitch. And then to try to imitate him, I would throw as fast and hard as I could, throwing out my arm every time...ouch! Even still, he was bad ass on the mound! I would always say to my dad, "He doesn't look like a goose, dad." ;)

There's also the infamous New York bias. Keith Hernandez deserves to be in the Hall for being the last of the great first basemen. As if the older writers weren't bad enough the younger writers are ignorant to the game they cover, they over-value stats and so-called "milestones".

You know what's funny is that Goose is a very nice and sensitive man. He was defending his teamates. He mentioned Ken Griffey. He had to let steam go that day. I know everything that led to this outburst and having read many books on the Yanks of the 70's and 80's, just let me say that the environment around the club led to these kinds of outbursts. He was fucking fed up.
