Then what was Einstein? He didn't believe in a personal God, the God he refers to is his nomination for physical/mathematical/scientif­ical perfection. He respected and loved this idea so much that he named it God (after Spinoza's vision of a God). Though he didn't believe in an afterlife, nor in a God creating the universe, etc...

Sincerely, I thank you for this video. As a Christian whose church has made so many egregious moves against its own congregation. I am thoroughly rethinking things. We have pardoned them for their sins many times over and still they display a defiantly sectarian interest. We rag on Christians for quote mining, so you should not use that one by Franklin about shutting the eye of reason. His full quote implies the opposite of what your truncated version does.

Also, most scholars don't believe Lincoln said the first quote you used. It 1st appeared 30 years later & many attribute it to PT Barnum instead.

That Adams quote never appeared anywhere before 2005 in a BBC documentary, & when challenged they later admitted it was their own paraphrase of another quote.

There was a pretty big controversy about that BBC documentary at the time. Their lack of embarrasment about quoting non-quotes was moderately well dicussed in media circles. John Adams is a favorite of mine, any Adams scholar would pick that out quickly as something he would never say.

The Franklin quote is from Poor Richard's Almanac, 1758, in the Chapter "On Virtue, Vice, God, And Faith" and it states in full:

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason: the morning daylight appears plainer when you put out your candle."

That statement really is the opposite of the way you & others are using it. Franklin was lauding faith, not the opposite

Since we have so many good quotes to use, many from Franklin himself on religion, like the lighthouse one, why cheat?

I always heard that quote you attribute to Lincoln as being from PT Barnum too. Just go to "Lincoln wikiquote" and you will see they list it as disputed and explain its first origin. Google "Barnum fool" and you will see some others say it was Barnum too.

Franklin is probably best described as a Deist. He definitely believed in a God, but was very skeptical of churches and religion. I think he saw God as a bit more active than many other Deists, but you couldn't call him religious or a member of any particular religion. Certainly not Christian.

The Adams quote is just fake and embarassing to perpetuate.
