You're not the first person to tell me that about TXF, as far as if it was the first album you had heard from Maiden, you wouldn't have bought another. I'd have to say I would agree if it wasn't for the songs Lord of the Flies and Sign of the Cross...I just love those two songs.

To each their own, my first Maiden album was Killers back in 1983 so my view of Maiden is bias to the era of the 1980's. As far as FOTD goes, I'm less critical of it now, but I feel that the song...

...FOTD was the only tune on the album that sounded like "Maiden". Apparently Maiden agrees since FOTD was the onlt non-80's song that they played on the SBIT Tour in '08-'09.

Either way, it's Maiden...So it's all good.

I've been listening to Maiden for as long as I can remember, since both my parents listened to it. I must be one of the only under 16's in the UK to like Iron Maiden.

The Clansman has to be Maiden's best song on Virtual XI, as well as Blaze's best song ever

Don't hate Blaze. Even if you don't care for his singing (but many do) , he helped "keep the homefires burning". The band may not exist today. They were close to throwing in the towel after Bruce left but the band saw the possibilities with Blaze and kept going forward. Blaze Bayley deserves as much respect as anyone else in the band, past or present.

I don't know why there's so much hatred for Blaze Bayley? Personally I thought The X Factor was the album that should have followed 7th Son since it progressed the band to the next level, rather than taking several steps back on No Prayer and the confusion of FOTD. I personally do like Bruce best as Maiden's singer but Blaze did a great job on XF and VXI.

I don't think they regressed backward with No Prayer for the dying and Fear of the dark. I think they progressed forward in a direction that Bruce just didn't fit as well with, also they had a "new" guitarst. Musically and lyrically those 2 albums set them on the path toward what would be The X Factor. Consider the lyrical matter and style of those 2 albums, like songs "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" and "Run Silent Run Deep". Globally conscious lyrics that they'd do to this day.

You are 100% right in regards to the lyrics. I should have been more clear with what I meant. Musically I feel that X Factor should have followed 7th Son, because NPFTD is much like the first 4 albums while FOTD tries to recapture the epicness of their 5th, 6th and 7th albums. I personally love NPFTD but I'm not a big fan of FOTD. The album had way to much filler for me and only a couple good songs.

Ah, OK I agree completely now. FOTD is my least favorite Maiden album as a whole. It took me years to come to really appreciate NPFTD and now I really do. And you're right, that album was much more stripped down like the earlier work (I think they had to, before they lost themselves), with a few exceptions like Mother Russia which imo is an underrated epic.

That was when I first started listening to Maiden. I just missed the golden era.

If it would have been different and XF would have been the first, I don't think I would ever have bought another album with IM. There is a reason why XF and VXI are two of IM's least sold albums. But of course there are a few songs that I like with Blaze, and I absolutely don't hate him, but Di'Anno and Bruce are just better than him in my opinion.

I found this corrospodence with the origional Clansman on my own.
