Apparently this song is the reason I get called a "Harajuku Girl" all the time for dressing weird. While that comment itself gets old I actually kind of like this song... the lyrics are pretty cheesy but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it was catchy
Cute commercial. Love Japanese culture. Some of my close family members now live in Japan and send me all sorts of things. Books, jewelry, figurines, blankets, artwork. And I've always been a big fan of Gwen Stefani and I love her Harajuku lines. Great combination of Orange County, CA girl meets Harajuku. Love it.

So what if she sucks at pronouncing Japanese? Japanese singers sing in English all the time! And their terrible at it! But who cares? Its a song people!
The strange thing is that Harajuku isn't even the fashion center of Tokyo. It is the capital fashion SUBCULTURES (EGL, indie, greaser) etc. Most "stylish" or "cute" stuff comes from Shibuya.
@WithUniquity It's just that it's a general misrepresentation.
She's sort of creating a stereotype. Like "Harajuku girls" = all Japanese girls. Which might be taken as offensive to a lot of girls who actually live in Japan, because a lot of the things that come out of Harajuku aren't the prettiest site- Harajuku isn't really what Gwen thinks it is at all.
The Harajuku district is generally where a bunch of teenagers (usually girls) show up to "express themselves through fashion."
@WithUniquity And what happens is a lot of Lolita, Ganguro, and Decora gone horribly awry.
It's not usually considered a cool thing to be an all-out "Harajuku girl," because the fashion sense over there is immensely questionable. Of course that's not to say nothing cute comes out of the Harajuku district, it's just that there are more misses than hits.
I think they'd rather be credited with the fashions that come out of places like Shibuya.
@Jamesscalise It's like when their's a "u" like "gozaimasu", but you don't say it like gozaimasooo unless you want to look retarded. And in Korean, there's 감사합니다, which in Korean romanization looks like kamsahamnida, but it's pronounced more like kamsamnida
@Jamesscalise You were saying how Japanese pronounce things in English and I was saying Japanese and Korean pronounce things in their language, so I don't know how that's 100% irrelevant...
LOL I love how people are like "she can't pronounce jap because she's white." well Japanese people can't pronounce english properly as well. unless theyre like utada hikaru or something
when asian artists spell english words wrongly 'omg they're so cute' but when western artists spell japanese or korean or chinese words wrongly 'OMG BITCH!'
@Ggakkungg No i study Japanese, i know She's not saying correctly.
Did you gain anything from calling me a retard?
she may be admiring them. but i simply DISLIKE this song. stop being so offended by me putting my opinion in the place where opinions are meant to be put.
@MickaylaxX excuse me for having a opinion and for putting it in the place designated for opinions about the song. I'm so sorry it offended you. Okay so you like the song, I don't. Not everyone has to have the same opinion as you.
she doesn't seem to have the slightest idea what real harajuku girls look like. She can't say harajuku correctly either. The more i listen to this song, the more it pisses the fuck out of me. -.-
@XXvictoriellahXX uhhhhhh then stop listening to it, let alone clicking on vids of it lol its that simple.
I like this song. And I don't get why people are getting offended Gwen is basically saying how she loves Harajuku girls and I bet she experienced them in Japan firsthand, and is singing about that experience.
People, can we focus on the fact that the song is catchy and she was just trying to make a rendition to something she liked? I am not japanese, but I am a lolita and I do not think there is anything wrong with this song, to be quite honest, and I'm sure the girls from Harajuku don't think there's anything wrong in it either.
@UmiKruspe89 Part of the problem is that there's underlying race issues (basically purity bs which offends me as a POC) and not understanding stereotypes versus generic terms and the "credentials" that some people want to demonstrate because they're a japanophile (though that in itself is fine but not when its done negatively). Everyone's free to like or not like the song but I do think that the underlying issues behind some who have been ragging on the song is really annoying and alarming.
i like gwen stefani alot, i grew up listening to alot of her music since my older sister really liked her, listening to this song again after a few years is really nostalgic (:
@EonaCrim not to fight for the sake of it but i think she does know what she's singing about. she's the one that brough me into the japanese culture after all ^o^
Gwen Stefani may be a perfect example of American Pop Culture, however I think she should STICK to American Pop Culture. She may have an appreciation for the fashions worn in Harajuku, however I don't think that wearing abnormally short and frilly skirts and parading around arrogantly with a couple of tackily dressed asians constitutes as being "Harajuku." Yet some how, because Gwen did it, now all of America thinks Japan is trying to copy her. Uneducated tools.
@awcomeon Not so much bitter as... irritated? Popular American misconception is that if America did it, they obviously did it first. This is annoying to those who Appreciate the unamericanized version of the Harajuku culture.
@LirksCantDance Okay first off, you have some of your facts wrong about America. No, America does not think that Japan somehow "copied" Gwen's misconception of Japan. Big deal, you can't expect someone from Japan to sing about American culture and get everything right. I mean come on the country is exactly on the other side of the world, why do you expect her to know so much about the geography and history of Japan? At least she is trying to incorporate the culture of a different country.
I love Japanese fashion, I do love gwen stefani, and this song, but to be honest....no. Gwen, you're amazing, but you can't pronounce Japanese, and your image on their style is just a tad off.
@hk1ful um...kay then? I most likely know a whole lot more about Japanese fashion than you, but whatever. I don't take internet threats from people who can't even spell and actually use the word...HATER.
@HoroGirl wow REALLY threats!! hahaha its OBvious u dont know WHAT ur talking about because i called u F*ckin L.A.M.E!! an HON, dont worry YOU dont know more than me - peace out HATER!!
@hk1ful From the way you're posting it is a threat, because you're trying to actually start a fight over YOUTUBE. That is sooooooo, soo soo VERY lame yourself honey. And if you DO know about Japanese fashion, name every single fashion on the streets that they do wear in harajuku, from every type of lolita, to decora, visual kei, kodona boi, dandy ouji, punk, etc. And there are so many more, BUT I'M SURE you already knew that dear. And learn to spell please. You're making me sick.
@HoroGirl Gwen Stefani has the Japanese "styles" correct, they dress pretty much the same as you do in America, I've lived here in Japan for 4 years now.
@HoroGirl Yeah. She can't pronounce Japanese...and when she said 'super kawaii', I wanted to puke. I'm not sure she knows all about tokyo street fashion. I don't think she has seen visual kei, lolita, cosplay, or any other tokyo street fashions. I do have to give her credit for a cool song >w< Perhaps she should stick to singing about american culture, eh? (no pun intended)
@LeSierraOfficial uhhh well she IS trying something different. Of course she's American, not Japanese, so she can't just come out speaking Japanese 100% correct, not possible...so cut her some slack at least.
@LeSierraOfficial I guess when you put it that way I HAVE to agree with you on that. My cousins are half-Japanese and i know the ways, so I can kinda come to agree on what you mean. It IS kinda stereotypical, but it is what it is. :-/
@LeSierraOfficial Because stereotypes are bad. Did you learn that in a multicultural class? The thing is she's singing about a distinctive style that encompasses a lot of sub-styles. And honestly the only "stereotypical" parts of the song is the nyoooo at the beginning, and using Japanese instruments to make it feel more Japanese. The rest of the song is referencing certain styles that exist in the culture.. :P I mean you make it seem as if referencing clothes is stereotypical..
@sheshiechan I don't know if you're japanese or not, but I certainly caught a LOT of stereotypes. The cat 'meow' the 'means supah cute in JAPANESE' part, and the fact that she doesn't even mention the specific types of Tokyo street fashion, shows it's very stereotyped. Not to mention her 'harajuku girls' in her band (which she based this song off of) aren't even 100% Japanese. They're half Japanese (or less!)
@LeSierraOfficial It's a poorly written song mentioning that broad sweeping term "harajuku" is stylish. Not stereotypical, "generic" is more accurate, I figured you'd understand the difference. That would be like someone mentioning they love "Latin" food but more accurately it's "Cuban" but still falls under the umbrella. I'm sorry but I don't think you should confuse "stereotypical terms" with the street cred you are wanting to convey that you have. Not even going to touch the race thing..ugh.
@HoroGirl actually, theres a lot of different Harajuku styles, it doesn't all have to be the same and she's also incorporating a little bit of different styles of lolita in it :)
@HoroGirl well, actually, harajuku isnt specific to a certain style. there are many different types. so she is spot on with her own version of harajuku, she does say "did you see your inspiration in my latest collection" INSPIRATION doesnt mean shes trying to be exactly harajuku. I dont get why everyones getting so upset about this
=/ I dont understand why people are taking this song so seriously, I think Gwen sang this for the fun of it, I dont think theres anything wrong with this song, not all songs have to be taken seriously x'D(@ those getting POed at it) I think it was intended for fun, stereotypical or not, if people want to talk about stereotypical music, they should check out Dr Bombay >.> he's stereotypical!

@HoroGirl wow REALLY threats!! hahaha its OBvious u dont know WHAT ur talking about because i called u F*ckin L.A.M.E!! an HON, dont worry YOU dont know more than me - peace out HATER!!
hk1ful 1 year ago

DeathAngleful 1 year ago
@HoroGirl Yeah. She can't pronounce Japanese...and when she said 'super kawaii', I wanted to puke. I'm not sure she knows all about tokyo street fashion. I don't think she has seen visual kei, lolita, cosplay, or any other tokyo street fashions. I do have to give her credit for a cool song >w< Perhaps she should stick to singing about american culture, eh? (no pun intended)
LeSierraOfficial 10 months ago
@LeSierraOfficial uhhh well she IS trying something different. Of course she's American, not Japanese, so she can't just come out speaking Japanese 100% correct, not possible...so cut her some slack at least.
chipsahoy303 9 months ago
@chipsahoy303 She's going by all the stereotypes of Japan, which I do not approve of.
LeSierraOfficial 9 months ago

:P I mean you make it seem as if referencing clothes is stereotypical..
sheshiechan 9 months ago
@sheshiechan I don't know if you're japanese or not, but I certainly caught a LOT of stereotypes. The cat 'meow' the 'means supah cute in JAPANESE' part, and the fact that she doesn't even mention the specific types of Tokyo street fashion, shows it's very stereotyped. Not to mention her 'harajuku girls' in her band (which she based this song off of) aren't even 100% Japanese. They're half Japanese (or less!)
LeSierraOfficial 9 months ago
@LeSierraOfficial It's a poorly written song mentioning that broad sweeping term "harajuku" is stylish. Not stereotypical, "generic" is more accurate, I figured you'd understand the difference. That would be like someone mentioning they love "Latin" food but more accurately it's "Cuban" but still falls under the umbrella. I'm sorry but I don't think you should confuse "stereotypical terms" with the street cred you are wanting to convey that you have. Not even going to touch the race thing..ugh.
sheshiechan 9 months ago
@HoroGirl actually, theres a lot of different Harajuku styles, it doesn't all have to be the same and she's also incorporating a little bit of different styles of lolita in it :)
XxtokitalolitaxX 10 months ago 5
@HoroGirl well, actually, harajuku isnt specific to a certain style. there are many different types. so she is spot on with her own version of harajuku, she does say "did you see your inspiration in my latest collection" INSPIRATION doesnt mean shes trying to be exactly harajuku. I dont get why everyones getting so upset about this

@mswickedchild
