I like the cleanness of the piece, the interpretation is a bit brash for my ears personally (tempo and dynamics) but for the first time I've heard all the words which is an achievement that deserves a BIG thumbs up.
I love your interpretation of this beautiful song. There are so many recordings of choirs doing this with tonality problems...you're dead on. Nice work.
Can someone tell me what the last chord is? The final "God"? It's so chilling and beautiful....I asked my Dad, and he said it sounded like a suspension but he wasn't sure
@sephiroth3782 Actually, it's more like a C#11th chord flat 7. C#, E#, G#, B, D#, F#. Those are all the notes for a diatonic C# major 11th chord, with a flat 7th.
I would be more than interested in your transcription. if nothing more than the first 20 seconds or so. email is my username at gmail, should you decide to share =]
there is NO vocoder on this recording. he may have used a touch of pitch correction, but i even doubt that.
the effect that everybody so ridiculously thinks is a vocoder is produced by the way his voice blends, combined with a mediocre microphone and a bit too much reverb.
There were a better dynamic gradient, and not just what seems like three dynamic levels.
Some of the vowels were fixed: the "leaping" greenly spirits of trees is kind of cat-strangling.
But it's an interesting idea, and you've done a good job of making all of the notes audible, unlike some of the best choirs out there. I definitely think Whitacre should Virtual Choir this piece.
Wow. Even if it is Vocoding or Autotuning, it's still a really, REALLY cool idea. I'd love to just show my own compositions using my own voice. The age of the composer might not be dead after all. :D Thanks!
@MrXrofl This song kinda clashes with each other's parts. A LOT. There's parts where the sopranos and altos are in 6 parts singing the thing the other part just sang. There's 13 parts at the end. It's really hard to stay in tune with this one.
nice work, I really appreciate this. And I can just image how nice this could sound in a smaller vocal ensemble instead of a big choir, thanks to this. Inspiring!
I REALLY love Eric Whitacre, and I think these are fantastic.
Something I really like about this is that, because it's all one voice, it's even more pure a timbre than an actual choir would be. The harmonies just jump right out and smack you on the face. They're so clear and audible. I love it.
The only thing I was kind of on the fence about was your vowels, but that's totally a tertiary concern because of how awesome this was.
I'm pretty sure this guy uses what's called a Vocoder. It's the same effect used in songs such as Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" and "O Superman" by Laurie Anderson.
The effect allows you to sing any melody with text, then transcribes your voice into any various combinations of homophonic harmony assigned by simple midi programing. This feature is available in many instrument sampling programs, with the most popular being Reason.
I think this is so perfect; I would rather listen to this than to the actual recording. This is so fabulous. I can't believe you are singing every part. That's so cool
Sam, Another beatiful performance!!! Very tight harmony, and synced!! Very Impressive!! Thank You for sharing!! I think your on the right track as far as the large room accustic effect.
haha, oh c'mon. This is more than reading music. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Sam here transcribed the song parts by ear instead of reading it off of a sheet.

Muito BOM! Mesmo muito bom. Acho que manter a afinação é excepcionalmente difícil... Extraordinário.

To the artist: Thank you for sharing your work of love. I think you honored the muses and Whitacre's music too, IMHO.
Nay-sayers: do one better than that or sit down and be quiet.

....I'm sorry but... this isn't right... Not for an Eric Whitacre piece...

@SanctusLumiere
The last chord, from the bottom upwards is:
F♯2
D♯3
G♯3
B3
C♯4
D♯4
E♯4
So its sortof a Bmajor 2nd Inversion chord, but also with the notes of a C♯major chord in it as well =)

Oh he's really singing it all. He's using a pitch corrector. It's kind of difficult singing that high completely in tune with yourself.
choirnerd101 2 years ago
No it's not. It's called control. If you can control your voice up there, then you don't need a pitch corrector.
