  • never heard this, very glad i clicked the link.

  • can anyone imagine the BBC broadcasting this song today?

  • Got a wee DADGAD Tutorial for this bad boy on my channel. The original tuning in this is mad!

  • Epic.

  • Dick is from Leith, and a Scotsman to his bones. I have never met a man with more integrity than he, may he live long, and may his last breath be a song.

  • excellent

  • I heard this Song the first time by the Dropkick Murphys and I love this song. But Dick Gaughan`s Version is awesome! He is an Amazing Guitarist!

  • Scottish Christy Moore...spot on my friend...great music...buy their stuff if you ain't aware...they really are wondeful.

  • The Scottish Christy Moore! Awesome!

  • As relevant now as ever...

  • @ceadachrua I would disagree with that. Worker's and poor folk seemed to have more dignity in the past, than now.

  • I'm a conservative, but I can still see where he is coming from when he sings this song.

  • @94Colonial Then you're not really a conservative i'd say! :)

  • @axelmoore Ok, more of a right-wing liberal if that makes any sense.

  • Thanks for trying , Mr Wolf , but we're "banjaxed" over here - the ridiculous Celtic Tiger has ripped out what little trace of dignity we ever possessed - allow us to stew happily in our unmitigated misery - don't want to be too hard on our country but it's a moral latrine.

  • We Irish idiots are now "carrying the can" for the fat cat bankers; and do you think any of those bastards will ever lose out? Not a hope....well done Dick, your song was many years now before what's hit us. But it attacks the same thing that we know now (and we always knew) — greed destroys, the wealthy scurry away.... and the idiots are left to pay.

  • @mmcdonn2

Guys like Dick & other Socialists have always told the Truth! We just stopped listening mo chara, & now that has come back to haunt us?

Every line of this song is a warning: "and expected to die, for the land of our birth? When we've never owned 1 handful of Earth!" & "We're the 1st ones to starve, the 1st 1s to die! 1st in line for the Pie in the Sky.

But we're always the last when the cream is shared out...?"

How many times "do we need told?"

    We've been shafted, despite warnings!

  • @mmcdonn2 As a fellow Irish man , I share your disgust for all we Irish "idiots" - was there ever a more spineless , creeping , moronic race of people than the gombeen Irish - we deserve to be shafted for we refuse to forego our slave/victim mentality...."by a lonely prison wall , I heard a young girl call" and all that self-pitying bollox !! We haven't produced a proper man since Niall of the Nine Hostages.

  • @mickigoe

    You produced Luke Kelly.

  • @MisterWolf7

True! But maybe it's no accident that Luke Kelly's granny was a MacDonald!

I say this without malice, but the best of the Irish is in your Highland Gaels, and that's who we claim descent from anyway!

  • nice one

  • Please remember James Connolly - Dick certainly does.

  • He knocks seven bells out of every other folk singer makes me weep laugh and want to change the world in one line of a song noone else can not even Dilan

  • The simple truth sends a shiver down the spine when it's sung

  • just brilliant thats all i can say

  • This is a gem...thank you so much for posting.

  • I would give my right arm to see Dick Gaughan live

  • @antiracistskin69

No need, he plays all the time still! just look on dickgaughan.co.uk for his dates! Saw him 3 times last year & it's about time I went see him again!

  • @antiracistskin69 - I did see him live mate, and it was bloody fantastic. At the end of the gig he asked for requests, and I shouted out "Freedom Come All Ye" and he said "I'll do it for the wee Aussie fella"... :-) I've been very lucky to get very close to some of the greats Dick, Big Brian McNeill, The Wrigley Sisters, Simon Thoumire and a few more.....thats what comes of playing music yerself. all the best

Scotty in Devon - banjo & smallpipes + Border pipes.

  • @Motoguzzi750

Superb mate! Sounds like you've had a proper "Gaughaning"? Take a wee bit of Gaughan with you wherever you go, that's all Dick would ask!

    Take care!

  • Jaysus. Young DG one of his best interpretations. Brilliant playing fits perfect to the song. Folk history legend.

  • awesome powerfull magic soulful beautiful materpiece,,,it should be recognised so much more these days....who the fuck likes beyonce or lil wayne whats the world of music coming toothis type of music is gone but never forgotten

  • Timeless and powerful. Sad that the struggle never seems to end.

  • No one surpasses Mr. Gaughan at what he does.

Nic Jones came very very close, Richard Thompson equals or slightly surpasses on guitar and has a massive song catalogue- but for soul-stirring hair-raising impact the crown goes to this man, this bard. I praise him.

  • Just learned the chords of this song, love peltin it out at the end of a hard day - makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

  • yeah don't give him an MBE, he's above all that. great song.

  • too bloody right! :-D

  • Unbelievably good. Saw him live last November and he's as good as ever, perhaps ever better. A national treasure. Carthy got a MBE - so should Dick (not that he'd accept it!).

  • @sobellfanatic

no, but he deserves to be offered it anyway! Especially, from Gordon Brown, now that I would pay to see1

  • How true these days.

  • Brilliant and powerful stuff. This bloke is a treasure -for Scots and for workers everywhere.

  • Workers song...Socialist song!!

    Awesome:-)...

  • Im a capitalist that loves the song, workers have the power and the capitalists have the money which is why they are able to play workers. In a real free society, we have a trader principle. Government made the "Fat Cats"

  • great stuff

  • I'm learning this just now, god bless the amazing slow downer, you damn well need it!

  • If you figure out the guitar solo, please share comrade? Gratitude awaits thee!

  • Love this too! What a performer!

  • For anyone out there.... also check out Alistair Hulett another great Socialist Singer and song writer with a razor sharp pen......

  • R.I.P Alistair Hullett

  • Excellent post.

  • GOLD!
