This is America's most important jazz guitarist....and has been since about 1980. Thirty years ago in 1981 James and Amin Ali the bass player were together. At the 688 club in 1981 with Grant Calvin Weston on drums......the best show I ever saw.
see "Tribute to James Blood Ulmer 'Rhymeless' " where I do my best to honor the harmelodic madness a freakaform funk-punk that Damu Mustafa Abdul Mussawir dreamt of and laid upon the world.
Yes this is Cosmic Scintillation from between the Belt of Orion and the Virgo Supercluster. 1st time I heard it I knew something was never gonna be the same. "Timeless", please, somebody.
This is THE GOODS. Mon I seed nothin like it since I first heard music in the cot! It shook me then- as now it does here.
He goes straight to the heart of the thing, and when there he examines the heart, squeezes it a bit, and then throws it into the air. maniac of sound.. the goods
Classic! This is really Amazing music. Love almost anything he creates - Such a big, creative pot he's got all this stuff simmering in - Thanks so much for sharing all this, ARSMAC1. I'm a big fan, and have been for more than a few decades.
Titles used in the past include 'Black Rock' and 'No Wave', the latter including most of the late 70s / early 80s NY scene including Sonny Sharrock, Last Exit et al. Whatever you call it, Ulmer's music of this period remains unique and absolutely vital (and criminally overlooked). He is the (Thelonious) Monk of Funk!
Perhaps 'Harmolodics' is a bit of a red herring here? It is a way of approaching / organising music, not the music itself. Schoenberg, Boulez et al were similarly tagged as 'serialists'. Check interviews with JBU where he says 'theory' is crucial - if only to discard it!
His elemental sound & style comes from blues, funk, jazz, rock, classical & the unique 'post-Wes / post-Jimi' interaction of his thumb and that big guitar. Harmolodics, lens-like, serves to focus all those elements.
I guess now he's some kind of ambassador for straight-ahead blues or something. Never takes a solo longer than 30 seconds and...you know, seems to be interested in making an actual living. I'm still a fan; but I guess there are moments in time and history and we've all moved in directions since then.
I'm gonna see him in december and i'm really hoping he will play some of the old stuff, it's a Mike Patton managed venue so you can never tell what is gonna happen.

Absolutely great. Can this stuff fit into any specific genre? I will not even try naming one. It will have to be mixed. Fusion?

Excellent comment and certainly gives me something to go by. But do you think that "harmolodics" can cover all of what he does, has done?
