To everyone losing thier minds about the cruel treatment of the snakes. None of you better eat meat of any kind or own any items that contain any leather because there isn't much of a difference. They use the skin of the snakes to make belts, boots, etc., and eat the meat. It has been my experience that hunters very often times have a much greater respect for animals than your average joe. And I am not a hunter, I'm just an average joe.

Hunters do not force their game to suffer in containers for weeks without food and water, and lung infection from gasses before they are killed and eaten. My friend hunts, his father hunts, neither of them consider these people who go out and gather snakes hunters.

I know im inviting a big argument by posting this but i am a member of the Evans county wildlife club that puts on the roundup in claxton. I disagree w/ the practices ive seen from other roundups and ours isnt the same. We DONT kill the snakes that are rounded up. We DONT skin or eat the snakes. No matter what many of you think, our purpose is not to harm the snakes. Our snakes are used for medical research, anti-venom, and education. For those who doubt my claims, i will happily provide proof.

Also, while this particular roundup may not kill thousands of snakes, many do. The practice is barbaric and should be outlawed under animal cruelty.

In comparison to snakebite deaths in this country (10 in a bad year) there were in 2006 119 deaths due to West Nile Virus. Robins are one of the majors vectors giving the disease to the mosquitoes who give it to us. You would save many more lives having a robin roundup than a rattlesnake roundup. Dogs also kill hundreds more than snakes every year

The thing is that what you need to do is not kill the snakes, but buy the people in areas such as India some shoes. There are not many people that rattlesnakes kill every year. In the United States would wouldn't save a single life by wiping out any snake species. In the US, about 5-10 people a year die due to snakebite, the disease that results from overpopulation of their rodent prey kills just as many if not more. Also, more often than not, it is the fault of the person bitten. They usually try to grab the snake, and many are in fact drunk at the time they are bitten.

A few years ago I was going thru Taylor County Ga on State Road 80. There was the biggest Timber rattler Ive ever seen crossing the road very slowly. It was at least 6 feet. Since no cars were around, and as I approached knowing what it was, I slowed my SUV and crept up alongside it and I opened my door just a "few" inches. It stopped and curled up just a little. I have to tell you, that was a pretty snake. I didnt kill it like a lot of people would've. They cut down on mice, etc. Let em live
