perhaps if we'd called it instead 'a POSSIBLE way of applying aikido principles to life' it might have helped. if so please hear it that way. i respect everyone's right to approach the art as they choose and seek from it what they will. when a kung fu teacher said, "aikido is no good for fighting." a friend said, "maybe but it's good for not-fighting."
o sensei said, "winning means winning over the discord in your own mind"
Winning means winning over the mind of discord in yourself.
There is no enemy of love. There is no discord in love. Aikido is the realization of love.
Aikido does not call relative affairs good or bad but keeps all beings in a constant state of growth and development and serves for the completion of the universe.
Morihei Ueshiba himself, said once that it takes at least 10 years to learn the basic techniquees!
If you are already a black belt (graduated by a non-McDojo) you should already know that it takes much more than watching an 1 minute video on YouTube to learn this noble art called Aikidô.
Aikido in 3 steps is possible if you believe anything is possible. Like it is possible I can wake up in the morning on the moon on beach front property. Highly unlikely! It is video titles like this which give the art a bad name! But how many of you have really gone up a good aiki practitioner before? Not a wanna be but the real thing? Someone who knows what they are doing and how and when to do it will beat a loud mouth drunk bully most of the time. I have they were drunk, and it was fun. ; D
This is a load of crap aikido sucks. I take self defense but defently not this crap, I knew how to do that before I even thought bout self defense it's just my instinct. But watever ppl who have no idea how to fight take aikido and learn how to walk! ;)
Fuck..... Fighting whitout center??? Where is your center between the moves? Thats not aikido, thats dancing for gays.... Really aikidoka or really men do not fight like that.... 3 fucking lesson????? I'm sure you took 5 lessons before you started to teach.... Aikido is a martial art, not just an art of self expression.... First you have to learn how to fight, if not, you will never know how not to do it :)
It's sad, that people don't understand what they are seeing in those Aikido demonstrations... YES, they ARE fake. Still, Aikido is incredibly effective. OF COURSE no opponent will roll like that (unless he is a trained Aikidoka, but then he wouldn't attack in the first place) - instead, he will have broken wrists or arms. The rolls are a technique to NOT GET HURT by your opponent. If someone doesn't know how to roll, they will simply get out of balance and fall, while getting their bones broken.
For my young children for please do not partake in the art of akido for it is not a legitimate fighting system for it is fake. For listen to me my young children for you can waste your whole life away with this phony nonsense for it is fake like WWE
Lol! Your not serious.......... Are you? I didn't care for the video either but Aikido is far from fake. The people that think it is fake have not experienced Aikido. It takes many years to actually be able to use it effectively. Anybody can take a year of Karate, MMA, Kung-Fu etc. and know how to fight better. Visit a dojo and ask the sensei to turn the throttle up, for you will see the error of your ways.
@BalanceNY Aikido IS a combat art. And IS very effective on the streets or in any fight because aikido is more than just throws and flips. Those are just the basics to get ur opponent unbalanced and in ur control. If you was to continue ur training you would learn about pressure points and easy but effective ways to break people's arms, elbows, knees etc.
@BalanceNY Aikido is BUDO according to O'Sensei so yes it should work in the streets. The change from jiutsu to do just means that the art should reflect one's way of living. The philosophy changes but not the martial effectiveness of the art must always be present. Otherwise it is not so different from a mere dance.
I have the actual DVD. Most of the ukes have zero skill in attacking. What's the point of training against attacks that, at the very worst, can mess up your hair?
@Brane91 - Aikido isn't a self defense art. Some people like to pretend otherwise, but look at the history of Aikido and see for yourself. Google search Aikido History and Black Belt and read the article in Black Belt Magazine.
what you are referring to as a dance is a specific exercise during which nage and uke touch palms and attempt to maintain contact through the entire sequence. It's PRACTICE.
@Brane91 Well it does seem like my teacher Shihan Robert Nadeau at direct student of founder Morihei Ueshiba has enjoyed this style of aikido. This is presented as one style of aikido.
hmmm... I wonder can anyone tell me is this a martial art or balet ??? for example try real aikido not meditation aikido because on the street nobody meditate
Pendryn you obviously don't have a clue. There is an opening in ANY attack that allows one to redirect the energy of an attacker - until you find the enlightenment of that truth you'll never understand , your comments reflect your lack of understanding
I don't like near any Aikido Dojo or have the flexibility as yet to travel with my newborn son...is it possible to learn some basics from this DVD? Would you have any suggestions if not?
it is just preying on the idea of becoming a Great Master... a real fight is something else, this is just pretense. martial arts nowadays are just an alternative aerobical training
I am a pupil of Akidio. Ofcourse this video is not realistic it is a demonstration. I have used Akidio against brazilian jijutsu, tai kwion do, muay thai, and a few other combat arts. They do not move exactly where you want, but if you think fast, and bend their arm right, someone can be thrown fairly easy. Akidio mixed with brazilian jijutsu is extremely hard to beat. WIth throws to the ground and any hold or choke of brazillian jujistsu.
@Brandonrobocop The problem with mixing those two though is someone who is using boxing, muay thai, or even tai kwon do are going to stand in one spot (moving their feet of course) trying to strike at you. Which makes it difficult to use aikido to take down your opponent. NOT IMPOSSIBLE I'm not saying that but it does make it more difficult. That's why i would mix aikido with judo and then use bjj for ur ground game.
all techniques shown in this video are totally unreal, if an attack is blocked - a serious attacker would not follow the movement but evade and/or change it.
I don't think the result in a real world application would be the same so in a sense you are right. The instructor and opponent are working together in unison for learning purposes, practice and the safety of the opponent. In a real world application the attacker would naturally resist and or try to change the direction of the attack. But by doing so this would result in a sever dislocation, broken limb or both.
Hey mate, try it :) U will follow the movement because u can't do anything else. If u dont follow, it's very painful.... U will automatically follow...
About 15 years ago while visiting the Bay Area, I had a chance to attend a class taught by Richard Moon. It was one of the most fascinating, bewildering classes I have even taken. A great teacher and a powerful Aikidoka.
Three easy lessons...hmmm I guess I've been wasting 18 years of my life. I still don't understand everything, I'll just have to waste the rest of my life training. (Darn!)
Ahh no no, you don't understand. There are 2 paths to the way of harmony, one is through years and years of learning and understanding, the other is 3 easy lessons.
You just took the longer path.
>_>
(Kidding, for all you serious Aikidoka who think I'm a wingnut) :P
Absolutely agree with it. This art needs to be performed really a lot. Much longer than other arts to be really effective. But then, it is big source of power
For everyone information, much of the footage her as been slowed down during the editing so you can see what is happening with the people. The speed of the attacks allow the blending and throw to happen.
bcuz if they dont they will end up with a broken wrist, elbo, leg, knee, ankle and neck. dependin on the technique. but a better way to understand this is to have one of those techniques used on you a few times and u too will b rollin around tryint o save ur limbs. lol i hope u understood?
There are better ways out of it than jumping. Some people are actually able to perform the throws without breaking, though the opponent doesn't fly like a kite when the throws are truthfully and correctly done. Aikido is a practice full of dishonesty in this way.
In Judo, Greco-Roman wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu you see fighters spending huge amounts of effort trying to control each other's wrists. But at the 5 second mark you can clearly see the uke offering his wrists with absolutely no resistance. In fact you can see it all over this video. The aikido response is typically that the uke has to be thrown to avoid injury. But does the uke have to offer his wrist to avoid injury?
One of the great books on aikido is "It's a Lot Like Dancing: An Aikido Journey" by Terry Dobson. Terry Dobson was one of the first american's who train with the founder of Aikido - O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba.
the guy was there with his hands in front of him just waiting for his opponent to throw himself towards him...look at the first few seconds of the video, you'll see what i mean..
aikido is nice, sure, but all these videos of it on youtube are so lame! all of them, EVERY single one, is someone practicing aikido vs someone who has no idea what hes doing and just throws himself with his arms wide open towards him...it seems the art is only good against someone who cant fight..
I think the aim of this DVD isn't to TEACH you Aikido in 3 lessons but giving you a better look at techniques and you may learn to apply when practising :P
However, it's best to have your sensei guiding you what to do hehe.. I hope I'm not criticizing this video.
