Put a floor on the price of gas at $4 and increase it to $10 within 5 years...price signals force change rapidly...of course no one would get elected/re-elected...
I'm really glad these questions are being asked and the candidates are actually aware of issues like peak oil, but the answers are a little lacking. It's clear that if we are to prepare for a post-petro world, we need to utilize renewable technology and structure a new economy that isn't based on oil. The hard part, and the point of the question, is HOW. Americans consume like no others, and fossil fuels are in everything; dramatic systematic and lifestyle changes would have to happen.
Considering the book that describes the Report of the Rome 2000--
Re: solar panel manufacture: I understand that some of the metals currently used in this [as well in a lot of computer technology] are rare, and often come from countries where their extraction is exploitative and possibly the subject of wars/violence. Looking for information--Anyone?
There is no solutions , renewables like everything else in the industrial world depends on cheap abundant oil, you can not mass produce and then service/maintain high tech stuff without it.
Power down and return to manuel labor/traditional agriculture etc are the only options.
We have the technology to live like the Jetsons but we don't have the Joules.
Makeing solar pannals takes a load of petroleum. we need to use the oil we have left(or can afford) and make alternative forms of energy. our entrie economie runs on petroleum, you cant even grow the crops to make biodiesel without petroleum. its all about the money
dreamers- i love the fact that people want to do something- but why the hell can no one understand that for anything- anything- to change- we have to take on the gate keepers- and the queen on their chess board is the media. the people we are talking about are the smartest the most ruthless and the most committed- you want to win- you have to be able to go to the wall
How about "Petrocollapse is inevitable. We have to use the remaining fossil energy to create renewable energy machines while there is still the money and net energy to do so."
Oil isn't used in electricity generation, at all? Peak Oil, extended, also includes concern about not only oil peaking, but also natural gas and coal... among other things.
