When I see him or read his books, the phrase "the smartest guy in the room" always comes to mind. I've been following him ever since I saw his "War" series on PBS.
A bright, bright man but I fervently hope he's not a voice crying out in the wilderness.

I think this guy does know what he is talking about,,most of the time. I remember him on the CBC almost nightly predicting that the allies would suffer thousands of casualties during the first gulf war, (1991) Instead we had the mother of all routes!
I realize this was made in 07. But he is so right. Wouldnt he make a great president? He is one of the smartest men in the world. He always made sence and if his opinion was called upon from time to time the USA would be better off. can we hire this guy? It's not of the people , by the people , for the people , any more and hasnt been in a very long time. Its Of the Money, By the Money, for the money. OIL can be substituted in place of the word money, if you like.
I've followed Dyer for decades and historian or journalist, his track record on future predictions is incredible. Case in point, note how he says the US will leave Iraq... "Frankly... if most Iraqis really believed they were leaving... most Iraqis would leave them alone and give them the time to do it."
Exactly what has now happened. If you really want shit your pants, read his book Climate Wars, one subject I sincerely hope he is finally wrong on, but he hasn't been in 20yrs of my observe
I had forgotten all about him until today when I downloaded his chat with Dan Carlin off ITunes. Very much worth a listen, and a re-listen. May try to scrounge up a copy of his old "War" series.
Gwynne Dyer is one of my favourite writers on the planet, his article is the first thing I read in the Georgia Straight and sometimes the only thing I read in there.
Thank you to the people who were very complimentary about Gwynne Dyer... he's my daddy! I didn't realize there were so many vids about him on youtube! who knew? Anyhoo... cool! I know it's kinda stupid for me to ask because he's MY dad and all but... in the end of one of the eps in his tv series he's spoon-feeding me (when i was a baby ha ha)? we lost our copy of it years ago in a move... if anyone could help, i'll do my best to send you a signed copy of his book or something. THANKS ALL!
He's producing a radio series at the moment and is promoting his newest book 'Climate Wars'. I think he was looking into doing a new tv series but I think he's putting off till I go to university. He doesn't like to be away too much and a tv series would require months of travelling. Sorry guys!
Pepper -- Are you telling me he is wrong when he says you will find that it is harder to kill large numbers over long periods of time with spears than it is with rockets. (He does have a PhD in military history by the way). To say that the armies were much smaller is Just plain wrong. Taking one example - The Battle of Cannae in 216BC involved at least 150,000 fighters. (more Romans died that day than Americans died during the civil war, it just took all day long to do it)
Sorry just went back and reread my comment. And what I said was wrong. I meant to compare battle for battle and I made the wrong comparison. My appologies. You are in fact correct the civil war was one of the most deadly wars in history. I was only trying to point out that back in the day the great ancient wars could get the same amount of war dead with spears.
Again I apologize for saying you were wrong. I was.
Thats o.k. I hope I kind of sounded like a douche in my own comment when I read it, I thoiught that you might have confused the civil war with the American revolution. You are right about the size of armies in the classical period, they only became smaller when in medeval times due to the collapsed economy.
You people are retarded. He came to our school and began a speech with I'm going to tell you how to predict the future, and then concluded with you can't predict the future. He also said the united states didn't cause the USSR to fall, as he was in russia and nobody mentioned the united states as the reason, only the economy...oh and apparently the reason less people died in ancient wars is becuase they used spears not because the armies were fractions of the size of today's armies...
I remember watching his TV series on War, and he essentially said that we were doomed to nuclear armageddon unless all our weapons and national interests were handed over to the United Nations.
Very highly educated, granted, but not exactly Nostradamus.
You can't predict the future, Russia's collapsing economy was the cause of the breakup of the Soviet union and surprisingly tanks, apache helicopters, cruise missiles and nuclear bombs actually kill more people than spears do.
Welcome to this little thing we call reality "retard".

Recently read for Father's book "After Iraq". Very interesting read. His background in military history offers alot of insight often overlooked.
It would be great to see him do another documentary series. It's been a very long time since he's done any TV work.

Completely wrong over 600,000 soldiers died in the civil war, at most 85,000 died at Cannae and that is probably a stretch
DouglasEdward84 2 years ago
I'm sorry Douglas but you are making an invalid comparison. You are comparing five years of war versus one battle.
Battles in the first year of the second Punic war.
battle of trebia - 25-30000- roman dead
battle of ticinus - unknown - major roman defeat.
battle of lake trasimene - 15-20000 roman dead
battle of cannae - 45 - 70000 roman dead
In the first year of the war there were about 150000 roman dead. And this is only the roman dead. Carthage lost large numbers as well.

Pepper -- First most overseas (ie: non-conservative americans) agree with Gwynne Dyer that the major cause of the USSR collapse was the economy.
