Well that is enough to run windows vista home basic. I would recommend 1 GB to run the other 3 versions. MY cousin has installed windows vista home premium on a 512 MB ram computer but it runs pretty slow. Technically it can run it but I dont think you would like it. It has alot of crashes and mostly it says "there is not enough memory" So if you want home premium or higher get at least 1 GB of ram but if you dont want to upgrade it than get the home basic version.

I think the principal trouble of vista is the copy protection technology embedded into it. It screw ups sometimes, consumes brutal amounts of memory/cpu cycles and is an antimoral technique. And that's why microsoft is advertising it as hell, more computers with vista, more control, more shit.

Linux is a different "animal" than windows. If you approach it like windows you will fail and be disappointed. What makes Linux especially attractive is it's tradition of respecting user's privacy and it's resilentcy against computer virus's. Furthermore what's really exciting about Linux is that it just keeps getting better. While M$ and Windows continues to try to take users in a direction they don't want to go. Hence Windows keeps getting shittier with each new version.

Actually, it's a really big jump.. Vista has DirectX 10, which is unavailable for ALL other operating systems.. now.. All of the others have 1-9.. all of the major titled games run on vista from experience. Everything looks better, however, MAC's are better in the long run TBH! Even though I'm a vista fanboy

Vista's security features are at it's worst right now and even a hacker with poor training can get through it. I might get it only when there's significant proof when Vista's unhackable and the security features has skyrocketed. It looks good for the eye candy but I'll have to wait and see if Vista's really worth the price and use.

There's a way to get to files encrypted with it through a back door which they had to do for people like the FBI so they can access files, so it sort of makes the whole thing pointless. There's a few other drive encryption apps out there which do the same. Charge you to use it then it can be gotten around.

And yeah, it's basically updated windows xp kernel with more of a mac look. Slapped in Media Edition and some new useful programs for good measure. All in all, it's a good OS, but unless you have the system for the better versions, then just stay away from Basic.

Actually, you can switch to Mac's and use Crossover to play all of your Windows games. Mac's are better for gaming because they use OpenGL, which will be a ton faster than DX 10 once it's upgraded in Mac OS X Leopard.

You didn't mention super-fetch, "glitch-free", the improved search, the new network code, the fact that windows will take care of itself better over time (after a few month of using XP the OS is getting fucked up in comparison to a fresh installation).

All in all I think Vista is really good but I agree that one should wait 1 year or so because of the compatibillity issues and such. The price tag is over the top as well
