Someone mentioned previously that they looked high. Well what group was not high in the 60 -70's, and even now? It comes with the territory. Most regular people were high. Except for us squares or chickens, like myself. Ha ha ha... Still one of the greatest groups ever. Loved them since the late 60's and always will.
absolutely one of the best harmonies i've ever heard out of a group - i wish all vocalists now could master the art of 3 part harmony without the aid of computers...
I am Barry Gibb! I’ve got a degree from the streets of Melbourne, Australia. So help me God, I have a buck knife in my shoe. I will split you open like a soft shelled crab and wear your carcass like a raincoat.
Okay. I am a 31 year old woman, and thought I knew a lot about the Bee Gees. The Barry Gibb Talk show skit on SNL was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I didn't realize the theme was based on a real song, and when this came on the radio on my drive home this morning, I laughed so hard I almost wrecked! How have I missed this song?!/ ''With these crazy cool medallions"
I am an old fart, and love music, everything from Slayer to Bonnie Rait. Whenever I have a music conversation with a new friend, I invariable get to asking if they like the Bee Gees. If they say either "no," or "who are they?", I know to stop talking about music with them as there isnt much left to talk about. As another poster stated, I also dont like everything the Bee Gee's did, but some of what they did, like this song, is pure genius.
I agree completely with you melomane2010. I don't care for everything that they do, e.g., sounding pretty much the same are the arrangements, instruments, predictability, but Nights on Broadway is something special - it is a gift from the music spirits
Still the best performance of the bridge I've seen or heard live - absolutely perfect. I can fill in the missing frequencies in this awful recording in my mind - I hope one day you will be able to as well.
@LittleChig Congratulations on discovering some great music. I was a fan of the Bee Gees back in their pre-disco days when they churned out one beautiful ballad after another. Lonely Days is from that era. I hope you get to experience some more of their music. It's good stuff.
man..i was born in 71 and i can remember the way this groups music made me feel..all the way up to saturday night fever and grease...at such a young age i feel i learned what it felt like to love a woman...now Ive been in love with the same woman since 1988 and am still with her today...those damn bee gees ;op...
I know I’m going to hear about this from that clown who keeps writing my channel, telling me I’m a “faag”, but damn, audio-wise, this is one of the finest examples of blue-eyed soul ever created. Plus, it’s got that bad-ass soul riff at the beginning and end. People ought to listen to this one.
Oh, and they still can hit all the noes to this day. And wasn't there a "Pretty boy" brother that was on his own? Barry, I think? I can wiki it I guess.
@paulgad Andy is the brother you were thinking of. Since the Bee Gees started in the 60's as kids, Andy was just a baby so he was not in the original band, but did great as a solo with hits like "Love is Thicker Than Water" and "Shadow Dancing".
@MrJCigelske Yes, I have been finding songs from the BeeGees, from the 60,s Especially the one who has to put his finger in his ear to regulate his volume, he had a really sad, but very good song from the late 60's or early 70's. I cant think of the song but I like it a lot. Also, I have found some real early stuff, that you would think were the beetles. They sound just like Lennon, and McCarthy. It was a bit eerie how much they sound like the Beetles. Thanks for getting back to me!!
I hated the BeeGee's as a kid, but now I appreciate, and even like them. They were a part of my early years of life, and we were/are a very musically oriented family. I liked this song, and some of the others now too. Who was Maurice, is he the one that OD'd is he the one all the way on the left?
@TheFishMiester I used to do that in the choir after seeing Robin - it actually helps you stay on pitch - which isn't particularly easy with a live band blasting away behind you while doing intricate 3-part harmonies. If this were recorded a bit better, it would trump the Midnight Special performance, especially on the bridge, which I think put this song (and performance) in the stratosphere. No one I know of is out there able to pull off this level of musicianship live anymore
@melomane2010 I absolutely agree; if the recording caught it all it would be a gem (well, it is anyway, but you know what I mean). I think the Eagles can pull off a pretty good show live; have you seen the live stuff from their "Farewell" gig in Melbourne?
@TimAber57 I have not - but I know that the Eagles vocalists are brilliant, and regardless of the controversy that surrounded the "Eagles Live" LP (essentially the controversy was about the studio re-dubs that Eagles performed in order to doctor their performances to an unheard of degree back in the day - today it's pretty much standard operating procedure since the current list of top selling artists fail at being artists at all), they were very capable. The Bee Gees never needed that.
Respond to this video... W\ell, obviously the commentary format requires me to find my special voice to express my thoughts on this song. Okay, here it is - this was the best expression of what the Bee Gees were and wanted to be - this song is brilliant. They were in sync with their times, and, further they actually had talent. Big, heaping piles of talent. And so, they owned this period of music. And I'm perfectly happy that they did.
I belive The Bee Gees made John Travolta who he is today, and John Travolta made The Bee Gees who they are today if Saturday Night Fever had never been made we would have never got to see and listen to some of the greastest music and dancing ever made,,
I like when Maurice comes in singing "Blaming it on" but later years he stopped and they had three back up girls doing that same part. This You can see on 79 and on performances of this song. But here we clearly see Maurice doing that part and to me that was the best part of the song. Maurice you were bad in your own way. And yes although I am black the Bee Jees has Always been one of my favorite harmony groups..On the studio version of this song Maurice blows that background away.BLAMING IT ON!
I just saw their Biography and absolutely fell in love with them. I really wasn't that crazy about them back then cause I was so into Zepplin and Sabbath, but damn - wish I had paid more attention and went and seen them live!
For me this is their best song and I love this live version where all three brother can be seen singing different parts, Barry baritone, Robin tenor and Maurice with the falcetto background in the chorus. Of course, later on they went a little too far with the falcetto, but in this song they were still on solid ground.
This is my favorite Bee Gees song. I never get tired of hearing it. They are simply amazing musicians, and, I think, WAY underappreciated for their talent.
Damn I love this music. Thanx for uploading! I was 8 when they did this appearance lol but I have loved these guys since I was a kid and they are so goodlooking! Barry especially, I had (have) the biggest crush on this guy...his wife is one very lucky lady!
Listen To Robin's Incredible Vocals at 3:00.......Wow...what a stupendous beautiful voice ...They deserve their riches..They are fabulous..They are good looking and they are good at what they do...excellent....Robin is So Sexy And Barry too...
@MrBeeGeesTheBest ...check out Barry at 1:39...when he sings:"how long will it stand between us"....the body shaking along with those fabulous deep vocals...you gotta love that...Barry you have a very beautiful voice like Robin...
Thank you for your notice I have watched this video so many times before and this is the first time I can see Barry at 1.39...no doubt he is the best performer of all time...in the history of musice no other act did what the Bee Gees have done...
Maurice payed a visit to the local police force in the afternoon and got us all uniforms for free or was it the fire service? Great live version. Anyone remember what show this was and where from?
@jcc57685768 You couldn't have said it better. Lovely voices, lovely combination. There's no harmony like family harmony eg. Everly brothers, Frank and Nancy Sinatra.
I hope once and for all that people realize that Maurice was an amazing singer. His singles and duets showed a very melodic tone and he DID have an amazing FALSETTO voice that nobody realized. This video proves all the naysayers WRONG.
@skipper8257 I saw the Bee Gees on this tour. I had a front row seat right in front of Maurice. I remember really noticing his falsetto on this song. Shortly after this, when the Bee Gees' hits all started having a falsetto lead, I thought Maurice had taken over as lead singer, until I saw them on TV and discovered it was Barry.
@skipper8257 Maurice was a mediocre singer. The strength of th Bee Gees was te ensamble. Not even the harmonies, quite simple and rarely original, but the sound of the three voices blended together. But this is a long story...
If you care, it's called "muting" the strings. If you watch Alan Kendall's left hand from 0:11 to 0:29, you can see him lift his fingers slightly up off the frets to create that sound. He's mostly just playing standard barre chords and it's not very difficult, but he does it cleanly. That technique has been around forever and pre-dated disco, but yeah, disco & funk artists used it a LOT back then. The Doobie Bros. guitarists, et al., also used it a lot back then.
Yep. Well spotted. Can't believe I missed that. *kicks self in the head*
I usually cruise YouTube at night (the only time I have free time) and I was probably tired. That's my story anyway, and I'm sticking to it. :-)
Shifting gears: Interesting finish you have on your Les Paul (on your channel). Mind if I ask what that finish is called? I've never seen it before. Is it a custom paint job?
This song is an amazing testament to the Bee Gees growth and consistency as songwriters...the way they moved from the 60's to the 70's and beyond is so under-rated.
This is my favorite Bee Gees song. The harmony of this song is just great and Barry sings with his normal voice instead of overusing falsetto throughout the entire song. Maurice doing the falsetto is just awesome.
maurice does a brilliant falcetto an the helen ready show he too has a brilliant range to his voice just love these guys .. their newer songs are brilliant too ...these guys are genius
actually i meant to say Maurice stopped doing that High note in their later performances of this song. I kept looking for that note in the their older performances of this song..he stopped long ago doing that part..it was my favorite..but its a very High note..I guess he could no longer go there .then I guess he probably became sick which affected his high falsetto..illness will affect the voice.
Barry did all the falsetto parts on the original record. Since some of them overlap with his 'regular' vocal, he obviously couldn't sing them both at the same time in live performances. So Maurice sang them when they did this song live.
If you listen closely to the studio version and live versions like this, you can hear the difference in their voices. I'm glad Maurice could do a reasonable facsimile so they didn't have to have an 'outsider' sing those parts in live shows.
Maurice stopped doing that high note at 3:46 47-.." I'm blaming it on..blaming on the nights on broadway!" he dosent do it until towards the end of the song..i always thought it was the sweetest note of the song..did not know who sang it until after see this video and another one posted singing this song in 1975. so maurice was the one with the highest falsetto..wow. what a lost.
This song is so funky!!!! The start of the song sounds a lot like the theme from Starsky & Hutch, makes me wonder if the artist who did the theme got ideas from this song. This song is so cool!!!
One of the most underrated Bee Gees songs ever. If not for their 1975 comeback album Main Course that featured Barry Gibbs falcetto vocals, there would not be a Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
The Brothers Gibb .....in this 1975 video they are absolutely GORGEOUS ..Barry, & twins Robin & Maurice (RIP)......Extremely good-looking Brothers..Tall...blessed with Great Vocals ...Good Looks... Beautiful long hair (Esp. Barry)...& Great physique.....Even now Robin & Barry you are no.1 to me...Andy (RIP)...you were in the same category as well.......This is my favorite video....

My favorite song of many by this talented group.... Robin's distinctive voice makes this song!

Maurice payed a visit to the local police force in the afternoon and got us all uniforms for free or was it the fire service? Great live version. Anyone remember what show this was and where from?

How is it possible that these 3 brothers could be so incredibly talented, each with their own unique voice? It just blows my mind.

@jcc57685768 Four brothers...remember Andy?
Lovethetropics 8 months ago
@jcc57685768 You couldn't have said it better. Lovely voices, lovely combination. There's no harmony like family harmony eg. Everly brothers, Frank and Nancy Sinatra.

I hope once and for all that people realize that Maurice was an amazing singer. His singles and duets showed a very melodic tone and he DID have an amazing FALSETTO voice that nobody realized. This video proves all the naysayers WRONG.
skipper8257 1 year ago 17
@skipper8257 I saw the Bee Gees on this tour. I had a front row seat right in front of Maurice. I remember really noticing his falsetto on this song. Shortly after this, when the Bee Gees' hits all started having a falsetto lead, I thought Maurice had taken over as lead singer, until I saw them on TV and discovered it was Barry.

@skipper8257 Maurice was a mediocre singer. The strength of th Bee Gees was te ensamble. Not even the harmonies, quite simple and rarely original, but the sound of the three voices blended together. But this is a long story...

One of my favorite songs. It's nice to hear Maurice stand out for a change because he was always so good at harmonizing to balance out their songs.

Love the scratch scratch of the guitar in the background. Disco sound.
vanjane 1 year ago
@vanjane
Yeah, likewise.
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 actually the scratch sound is combination of muting the strings and using the wah pedal, which you didn't mention :)

Great Song!!

This is my favorite Bee Gees song. The harmony of this song is just great and Barry sings with his normal voice instead of overusing falsetto throughout the entire song. Maurice doing the falsetto is just awesome.

maurice does a brilliant falcetto an the helen ready show he too has a brilliant range to his voice just love these guys .. their newer songs are brilliant too ...these guys are genius
annettelane 1 year ago 2
actually i meant to say Maurice stopped doing that High note in their later performances of this song. I kept looking for that note in the their older performances of this song..he stopped long ago doing that part..it was my favorite..but its a very High note..I guess he could no longer go there .then I guess he probably became sick which affected his high falsetto..illness will affect the voice.
blkshepherd 1 year ago
@blkshepherd
Ken5244 1 year ago
