well.... I built my first rubber powered scale model fifty years ago, and I've watched all of this unfold. Those funny radios on rubber bands were all that was available then. This Christmas I got culture shock when somebody gave me a Syma S107. Flies straight out of the box!! Where do we go from here?
Great historic footage thanks. The plane probably stalled, first because of that throw, the tail shouldn't have been pushed like that, and because he only had rudder control, from a single valve receiver. (note the meter for checking the valve plate current which changed when a transmitter carrier was on). It would be nice if the name could be corrected as mentioned earlier. (Taplin) He also developed the Taplin Twin model diesel engine which sold in the 50's-60s. Thanks again.
absolutely stalled - the question would be did he recover or not? given the altitude I would say not, not only that but the model was clearly grossly underpowered hence the hand launch when a suitable field and more than adequate landing gear are evident and reinforcing the suspicion of a post stall crash.
Not really. The DeWalt cells can only a manage a max of 2300mah at 3.3 volts nominal. Lipo is still the most efficient way to go if you need the most power. Hopefully we'll start seeing high capacity cells, or smaller ones with a similar capacity to give lipo a real run for the money.
its no longer a rich mans interest , i have a superb electric ARTF sailplane with 2 channel rc and 25 min flights for £30 off the internet ..20 years ago you would pay that for a servo ..its a faboulous hobby
silver zinc LOFL boy i bet everyone on the 50s was like this nuts a crakpot now whos laughing good lord look at the size of those batteries LOL ya it crashed hehehe
IIRC the guy's name was Taplin rather than Talpin. Never the less an excellent video. ps I think you're right about the Radio Queens demise - seen it happen too often :)
What a difference now we have brushless motors and LiPo lightweight batteries.
@SuperAviatar right, but old gods of the air, miss the days when they had free flight models to play with!
I think that true spirit of model airplane sport has nothing to do with nowadays hi tec toys

Anybody ever heard of Tesla? hehehe...he gave a boat demo like that over 110 years ago, I think...

You are actually right!!! Tesla invented radio control and tested it in a model boat.
