These days, some stations time their cut-ins so that they won't interfere with a network program, like a sports event. Example: WYTV (ABC in Youngstown, Ohio) presented weather coverage during the quarter breaks of Game 4 of the 2004 NBA Finals.
@flskywarn Well, with the fast-paced style of professional basketball, they knew they weren't going to have any time to update viewers on the severe weather status during the actual game. They did, however, break in to report that they just obtained a warning from the Weather Service, all while the L.A. Lakers threw up a shot.
These are incredibly important, and actually need to happen more often. Severe weather coverage can save lives, Dancing with the Stars or the Biggest Loser cannot.
I actually miss the days when they kept them simple though. This young lady does a terrific job of clarifying what is going on, and does so in a simple manner that anyone can follow.
Unlike today where most television meteorologists use cut ins as a chance to parlay their weather vocabulary and play with a bunch of their tech toys.
@flskywarn 3D Radar is a good tool to have and is one that I think of as a good advancement. What I refer to is things like the tornado indicators and hail markers. For instance, a few weeks ago during an outbreak here there was a tornado indicator of like 4 on their scale. The meteorologist actually got flustered as she told everyone at home to ignore it because trained weather spotters had already reported the tornado on the ground and they had already had reports of damage.
@flskywarn No, she meant ignore the tornado indicator because based on the indicator there was only a 40% chance that the storm "could produce a tornado." She saw it in the corner of the radar after reading the report and got flustered about it being so low.
@flskywarn back in 1995 3d doppler, VIPIR, TITAN, GrLevel X and ESP:LIVE didnt exist. NEXRAD displays were primitive, street level mapping and storm tracking were non existant to difficult and even the LIVE Doppler Radars were hard to come by and were only around 200 watts.
You have the title of the 8PM show backwards. It's Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
