  • Hi there Just purchased X-Com:UFO Defense on Steam and when I click play DOSbox starts up as usual but then it's just a black screen, I hear some sounds of what may be the intro movie or menu music but I'm not sure, and after a while it's just a silent black screen.

    Help?

I've checked a thread on another forum 'possibly the best way to instal xcom ufo defence' and unfortunately I can't make much sense of that either

  • I never understood why running took less action points than walking in this game. First thing I always did was set all guys to running mode as walking was useless.

  • Any chance of getting copies of your midi files for my game?

  • @soontekoh34 visit xcomufo dot com and under the UFO tab, music has the two tracks I created. Enjoy!

  • @ziocody btw, i removed the files like you showed and the music still played in game. i then tried to rename the file "MUSIC" to "MUSIC1" and ran the game, bam no music! :D I get to listen to other music now! TY!

  • wheres the music download

  • @TheEHJJBO visit xcomufo dot com and under the UFO tab, music has the two tracks I created. Enjoy!

  • I can't get this to run on my CPU. Maybe Windows 7 is just being fussy, but when I try to open it, I just get a black screen with sound, and then the game crashes. :(

  • Bah! I only load saves to recover from the game crashing. Well, mostly. Sometimes I get really mad and load a save, but I try to avoid that. It's more fun if you just role with the punches.

  • Alfa? its Alpha..... lol, sorry had to point that out...

but amazing gameplay dude! do u have a tutorial movie for what to look for in soldiers?

  • To modify any type of windowed settings, just open up the 'dosbox.conf' file (located in the same folder as the dosbox.exe file) with Notepad, and make the necessary edits. Change 'fullscreen=true' to 'fullscreen=false'. This will start the game in windowed mode as soon as you double-click the dosbox executable. If you want to increase the size of the window, then find the 'scaler' entry in the dosbox.conf file and put in the following: 'scaler=advinterp3x'. More info, see the dosbox website

  • To play the game without running steam, you'll have to go to the Steam folder: 'Progam Files\Steam\steamapps\common'. Here you'll find your steam games, so open the 'xcom ufo defense' folder. The game is run within Dosbox, so you can use it on newer computers without issues. Simply double-click on 'dosbox.exe' to start the game. That's it! Enjoy :)

  • Thanks for the vid! Absolutely LOVE this game :) I recently started playing this again, after finding it on Steam. For those of you looking for the game, just go to steam, and they have the entire X-Com series available for a mere $15 (only $3/game!)

My next comment here is for all of you who downloaded it from Steam, and don't necessarily want to have Steam running in order to play the game. Also, I'll show you how to run the game in windowed mode from the start (no need for Alt-Enter)

  • Being a fan of this X-com, (beaten it probably 6-7 times)

I have to tell you guys about a strange Easter egg, or glitch in the game I once encountered (using the playstation version). While playing on Veteran mode, I left my game on overnight during a terror-city mission. The following morning, there was some junk laid on top of my controller from my mom cleaning up (controller was upside down, with some random button being pressed and held all night). All my characters had the name"Julion Gollop"

  • @StingChameleonREMIX

It must be an easter egg, julian gollop is the x com series developer

  • @lookslikeabitch Oh that makes sense! haha

  • Great tips. Thank you!

  • And here i thought I was the only one around who got this deep into the mechanics and nuances of a game, ANY game, let alone X-com.

This is quality craft here. Bravo for consideration, and Bravo for delivery.

  • Awesome. Great idea, really helpful set up.

  • How to do the windowed mode if you got UFO on steam?

  • @powersniper115 my copy is a windows installer called the gold edition, available prior to the steam release. I mention steam to signify how this game is withstanding the test of time.

  • @powersniper115

I have the steam version and Alt+ent works fine.

Ive Alt + Tab'd out of the game once or twice and it reappeared as a playable window. The game has never crashed once doing it for me.

  • @powersniper115 alt+enter ?

  • @John23476489 Thx. I think I should explain what I really want xD

I want to make the window bigger in some way, But is that possible in window mode?

And thx for it all :D

  • wouldn't you want to sack the soldiers that have below 50 bravery?

  • @pr0snyp3r An argument could be made for any soldier stat really. Bravery best helps when your troop is really getting hammered with losses and/or mind control. Panic will be overcome more quickly in this respect. Bravery is also worth screening because it can't be improved. I offset panic from mind control by disarming that soldier once I notice the problem. Panic from heavy casualties is offset by good reactions. If your troop is shooting first they are suffering fewer casualties.

  • @ziocody thats a good point

  • @ziocody if you have the extender mod, bravery improves from berserking and panicking. later on, you'd sack soldiers with less then 90 psionic strength

  • @pr0snyp3r I always screened soldiers based on Bravery myself, I noticed in TFTD bravery can be raised if a soldier successfully recover from a panicked state.

  • Mind if you upload ur gameclient with the music you used etc ?

  • Bravery shows psyonic attack strenght

  • I learned some tricks watching this. Never thought of weeding out soldiers that way. Will watch the other videos as well.

  • I'm actually getting a bit desperate for this game. About a few month ago, I got it, but my laptop broke and I had to buy a Windows 7 Computer. Care to share the link where you got your Collector's Edition? Assuming you didn't buy it.

  • This was a classic game I might try installing it after I find a copy of the game. Does any know the 2nd UFO game the one before the third that was called apocalypse? Ah YES UFO DEFENCE, thanks for the post

  • Reactions isn't the only good stat! who cares if a person has 100 reactions but only 10 strength and 10 bravery

I find that 40+bravery, 45+ reactions 55+ firing accuracy and 40+ strength works best

  • just subscribed i love the game but dont like the current sounds... could u help me get the psx sound track on the pc version of the game

  • Micah was kind enough to host the music on his web site: xcomufo also listed in the more info section upper right. Both tracks are available for download now. you would play out these files after deleting the midi files from the xcom sound directory.

  • what is considered cheating? it seems that the difference between tactics and cheating is blurry.

im assuming that reloading a battle save after loosing some soldiers is cheating... but is everything else fair game? is saving/reloading (soldiers stats tricks etc) in geoscope mode not considered cheating? wouldnt the purest way of not cheating be saving only when going to bed?

  • There are cheats available for this game like modifying funds and soldier stats, then there are tips & tricks. I find two definition entries of cheating that apply to your question: to elude or thwart by or as if by outwitting & to violate rules dishonestly. I'm a purest in other games like RE5 beause I don't like the idea of unlimited ammo. For XCOM I think you called it, the line is blurry. You are an expert player, you decide.

  • One more thought, how about the argument of threshold. Obviously, I have an extremely low threshold for losing troops while yours is much higher. I have played through this game more than twenty times and I have come to despise losing soldiers in the battlescape. Early on, I expected losses as well as saved less often. Now I gear the game towards surviving being shot by leading with reactions, medkits and armor over accuracy and weapons. Your thoughts?

  • Now I found it interesting you went with Reactions as the keep-or-boot stat, traditionally people have always told me to judge them by their Bravery stat. Any comment? :3

  • I really like what you've done with the game audio and your approach to this game. Good job! No wonder you're proud! :)

Are your audio files available for download?

That being said, I challenge your statement that bravery cannot be improved.

I saw a let's play (think it was necroscope's), and one of his soldiers survived a battle where he panicked and got 10 bravery for it aftewards.

I cannot say if this was legit, but it seems plausible. What do you think? Can you be certain it isn't possible?

  • Micah was kind enough to host the music on his web site: xcomufo also listed in the more info section upper right. Both tracks are available for download now. you would play out these files after deleting the midi files from the xcom sound directory. As for bravery improving, I don't believe it. In later videos such as Terror Ship 1/2 when you look at stats, the colored bars that represent amount in that gray category remain constant. (more)

  • Stats that do improve show two shades of the same color, lighter shade represents improvement. Game editors reveal improvement as well allowing you to manipulate the starting or improvement points. Psionic stength can't be improved either. I always think of Private Hudson in Aliens who seems to be hard wired to panic when driven to his wits end "Hey man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours! Those things are gonna come in here and AND THEY'RE GONNA GET US!"

  • Have you ever tried this with XcomUtil? Then again I wonder if it even works with the steam version now...

  • Yeah, that editor is one of the better ones out there and it should work with the Steam installed x-com.

  • Wheres link to the music? :b

  • Micah was kind enough to host the music on his web site: xcomufo also listed in the more info section upper right. Both tracks are available for download now.

  • Awesome

  • finallu good tutorial im looked for this cool

  • So You have find the UFO-1 using Your crafts?

It would not appear at the same time using only Your radar system ?

I'm begining to like these videos : )

  • Yeah, I have used the on board radar countless times to spot UFOs that the base radar misses. Also works well for countries that you don't have radar established, that's how I know it works.

  • Hey man, You said I does not matter where you set Your first base. But in the Europe there is the the highest number of contributing countries.

It affect the first month income.

  • Dude you are sooo meticulous. I never knew people played like this. Back in the day I would just buy a rocket tank. Your way is wayyy more efficient.

  • i can't belive i'm playing this game again, nothing comes close to it seriously :)

  • just getting into this game for the first time, I just love UFO's and the game has an interesting approach. This vid helped, going to try some stuff now!

  • Just a little pro-tip for the experienced X-Com player... It's spelled ALPHA

  • I went with the NATO alphabet, formally known as the international radiotelephony alphabetspelling. Good catch though

  • @JadeStarLP Well protipper...There are different ways to spell out "A" in the phonetic alphabet and ALFA is one of those ways, along with your version (OR THE ANSI way)

  • It's so thrilling! :)

  • I have played this game with my dad since I was about 4, and this game rocks. Right now, I turn 19 in just a few days and I dl'ed this game from Steam. This goes to show how good this game is by far.

  • Excelent video, great idea to shown the setup steps outside the game in order to improve it. I personally like the game's music, but your music sounds pretty appropriate and nice as well. It's be cool if you'd share them.

  • check the web site xcomufo listed in the more info section to the right. The tracks are available right now.

  • nice trax, can you share that music?

  • check the web site xcomufo listed in the more info section to the right. The tracks are available right now.
