I think the point of this test was because ichigo got huge, powerful swords from the start, and relied more on sheer power and some speed rather then skill. He always blocked attacks head on, not bothering to deflect.

He wasn't a really amazing swordsman, he just swung around zangetsu, blocked directly, and that worked fine. His bankai, however, is much smaller, and I think this test was needed because he wouldn't be able to use it with skill if he had just obtained it right away.

well he fights him twice, once in the dubbed versions and once in the subbed version. the first time is the bankai training. in which ichigo must find Zangetsu's true form and defeat him to learn bankai. and the second is when muromasa is around(see subbed version)

gimme an example of what techniques HE CAN learn from

just a sword by himself. I said it before, Zangetsu only taught Ichigo GETSUGA TENSHOU. It was his only skill.

Ichigo could probably learn some new sword fighting styles or something, but he can't learn a new technique.
