learned to appreciate toms music by my brother,,, and now i really like his music,,, no, i don't like it,,, i love it,,, toms music is like a child... beautifull,,, inside and outside...
This song starts with a gravelly growl that can only be compared to Louie Armstrong. Then, about thirty seconds later, you realize that you are listening to one of the most beautiful songs you've ever heard. This is a heartfelt lullaby to all the downtrodden, displaced, hurt, broken and lost souls in the world. And no one else can so suddenly transport the listener into another space and time quite like Tom Waits does. He is a unique and mysterious presence in the music world.
@JackKangaroo1 well stated, Jack, thnx for your comment. no matter which of Tom's songs I listen to, it's the best song I ever heard, but this one really hooks me ...
@becksdollface I first discovered Tom Waits' music thirty years ago through a musician friend in upstate New York. There is something peculiarly compelling about his voice and the songs he writes. I always get the feeling that he is connecting the listener to deeper realities, pulling them up for us to see. And seldom have I heard a voice sing with the passion and resonance of Tom Waits.
I also am a big fan of John Prine, another guy with a unique style. Check him out some time.
This is one song that I never want to end, constantly wishing there was more and more verses. Sitting up til 3am, lying in the dark with Tom on is one thing in my life that is absolutely humbling.
@becksdollface Thanks very much for doing that. I'm a member of a discussion forum called Non Sequitur: we embed images and videos to illustrate and illuminate our topics. Tom Waits is one of my favourite artists.
Great song. I hadn't heard it until today. I am going to add it to my set for my show this Friday. Tom Waits is such a great lyricist. I wish I could write the way he does.
I think there is no young songwriter today, who can write a song like this on a topic like this in the way TW did: meaningful, beautiful, bringing you right into the atmosphere of it, without beeing an annoying starry-eyed idealist or do-gooder. He is a class of its own.
@whatmikeg1 absolutely 1st Street also ... skid row is more than one street ... for 75 years, on 5th street, the LA Mission has been of service to those in the skid row area & beyond ... Union Rescue Mission is near 5th Street ... today many individuals & families will gather for Thanksgiving Dinner together

This was my son's favorite song. He died last month and I had this song played at his service. I was not that familiar with Tom Waits until now, but I forever more will be. I only wish I could have enjoyed this wonderful singer's songs with my beautiful son during his life. He was just 27. Thanks Tom Waits for bringing me closer to him as I will enjoy your music and remember my Gregory through it.
this is so beautiful one of my favorites its really hard to just pick one, there is no one like him i feel so lucky to be in the world at this time to hear this great man
@2debbiebeeson I so agree .. it is Tom's best. I have a Tom Waits playlist on my channel if you look there. I add new videos as I can. The video response here by doghousedave is a nice cover worth the watching ..
I first discovered Tom Waits when my retarded 35 year old neighbor who lives with his parents checked out the cd from the library.

@FairGoodStrong 'skid row' in Los Angeles is on 5th Street & a nickel is worth 5 cents so 'on the nickel' is like saying 'skid row' or on 5th Street
