@TheOne42 Lol. No way! I was about to say that! And go figure it was the last comment to be posted (before mine). Darn it. Lol. Oh well I was a month late. You win. You get an up for that.
@jayvm1993 don't speak anbout what you don't know. Many people keep rats as pets (me having three at the moment) and they are the most beautiful pets most people have ever had. They don't bite, they are smart and they LOVE people. If I could compare them to any animal I would say they are like little tiny dogs, only I have to say I have two dogs and three rats and I think my rats are smarter than my dogs.....
I have three fancy rats, and people who come over are usually quite surprised until I get them out and they hold them. All of them know thier names, and they are more affectionate than my dog. Try learning a bit about these lovely animals before condemning them.
Pouchedrattie, he is a beautiful rat, and I am jealous that you had one of these. RIP, Matisse.
@jayvm1993 Try not to be so narrow minded. I have 2 rats and they don't give me the grief that my dog does .I don't have to walk them in the blizzard, they don't bark, and I only have to wipe down their cage once a day. We love them and they are affectionate. My dog and cats love them too. People come visit and eat here all the time. They like rats now that they have seen them in my home so friendly. At first it puzzles them, then they end up wanting to adopt them too.
Aw. My rats were dumbo so not..as big as this.. I think my mum would have freaked but they were THE BEST PETS EVER.
they were rescue rats from a mistreated source so were never really going to be long lasters but despite being abused they were the most loveing creatures ever. some of the random stuff they took though.
Love it, Ratty's are the best huh? I've had 8 Rats in the last 8 - 10 years, every one of them is unique and very intelligent. Never heard of the "Gambian Pouched or Emins" Ratty's, will have to look into it. Thanks for sharing. Life without Rats is missing something for sure.
they look lovely and cuddly but how big do they grow, i have six fancy rats wich i know are a lot smaller and different.
Do they need to live in pairs?
After having fancy rats for while i think it would be great to have one of these guys but how would they get on with a bassett hound? And how rare and expensive are they in the UK?????
Most interesting to see. We have a Holland Lop who is terrific; got to love little furries. I'd like to get a rat, not necessarily one like this, but it is illegal to own a pet rat in the province where we live, it's "rat free" and we even have an honest to goodness rat patrol on our southern border with Montana and on our eastern border with Saskatchewan. I must say that rats look to be a hell of a lot of fun.
i'm very interested in getting either an emin/gambian pouched rat, but i'm not sure if they can be acquired in Germany?? do you have any suggestions or info that might help me out? i am absolutely in love with them! i've had fancy rats in the past, but these guys just are indescribably awesome!
@mein1985 He attacked the cat FAST and I had to grab him. Despite my quick reaction time, he still got away with a huge tuft of fur in his mouth!! I don't doubt he would have killed my cat if they were let alone together.
hi, i work in an exotic pet shop in the UK and we have a breeding pair of gambian pouched rats and neither of them are very friendly. Are emin's pouched rats a lot more docile then gambians or are our two gambians just particularly antisocial?
They're not going to be social unless you handle and bond with them. Emin's and gambians are mostly the same, except one's slightly smaller and has different coloring and such, small differences in size and appearance. As long as the pouchies are handled daily, and are bonded, gained your trust, whatever you want to call it, they're fine usually. Also, breeding has a thing to do with it, and how many generations removed from the wild, but even that I believe isn't always the case.
the ban, HR669 got turned down. but they are going to try again, this time focusing more so on reptiles from what ive been told. everyone on the exotic animal forums i go to was and still is up in arms about it. and your rat is so cute. the only rats i have are the normal fancy feeder rats, but i love my boys. how are ouched rats different from fancy rats besides size?
They share SOME similar traits to domestic norway rats, but only some. For the most part, they're a large exotic animal that needs to be handled regularly or they will revert to their wild side. They need constant attention and are very hard-headed, and if they don't get their way, they WILL find a way to get it. They're also very strong, and are SOLID muscle. They can even chew through a wire cage if they want to. I know about the ban being turned down, but could still return.
I'm somewhat wary on lifting all restrictions on exotic pets; maybe there should be a licensing requirement to ensure a commitment to responsible ownership. Too many people collect exotic pets on impulse & they end up not being cared for, esp when they don't behave like house cats. Also there need to be protections in place for the animals being exported, etc. I do hope you can have another pouchie, though; looks like Matisse was a happy rat!
Most of those people shouldn't be owning pets at all, not just exotics. Matisse was easier to care for than most other exotics I've kept in the past, but he still had his specialized care.
Most people I come across shouldn't even own a dog, let alone an exotic. The strange thing is I think I'm perfect with exotics, but I would NEVER own a dog. Too much work, IMO. pets like Matisse are easy to train and have that nice little wild streak still in them that's beaten out of domestics.
Good point, I agree. I wish that every person who considers having a pet would realize that their first consideration must be how they will meet that animal's needs, not how the animal will meet theirs. It's great to see vids that show animals being loved and cared for - thanks!
yeah I hear ppl say stuff like that alot. It's kinda stupid how most ppl think to see something as being cute makes you gay. Maybe if it was a human that is the same gender as you, THEN it would seem gay lol
Oh M y God! Matisse was absolutely beautiful!! I cried so much when I read he passed away Summer 2007. I keep domestic rats & I know how much it hurts when they pass away suddenly with no prior warning. What a lovely life he had with you; I hope you got your new pair. Love the vids SO much! Hugs <:3( )~~
well first off, I would live trap.Secondly if there was a "wild" african rat in my house I'd wonder how since I live in the US. Thirdly, I've never had wild rodents in my entire life except ONCE, and we just used UV lights to track where the mice came in from, and fixed the rotten wood in that old house. They won't be there unless there's a reason for it.
That said, he was amazingly intelligent and loving. I don't understand why people own dogs when they'd shoot a wolf, but to each their own
Where did you get your pouched rat? i know they're legal in the US now and I'm HIGHLY interested. Like you, I foster rats and have 6 of my own. I understand that this critter probably couldn't be housed with my wil guys. I've been looking online for a breeder in the US with no luck! =[
wow, amazing, i just wanna ask you something, please dont get me wrong, but what about her behavior i mean had she bite you or not reconize you and attack you...or is she nice and chill...please i really want to know how a rat behavior could be if she is in a calm and comfortable enviroment..thank you
Regular domesticated rats rarely bite, if ever. Out of around 130+ small rats I've had in the 15 years of rat ownership, only 5 were biters. This was out of rescues, pet store rats, and rats from breeders or unknown backgrounds. Matisse was an emin's pouched rat, a large african species related to the gambian rat. He didn't bite, either, and loved cuddling and would frequently groom me and lick my fingers. He also would try pulling me into his bed with him. My other videos show how he acted.
Wow! I love ratties (I realize these guys aren't actually 'rats'). Mine were also big chunky-butts. This guy looks like he lifts weights every day! Impressive!
Thanks for that.. I was pregnant at the time plus I have hypothyroidism thanks to genetics. Glad to know you were dealt a good hand in the gene pool of life.
please look at my other videos. the cage you see in the background was actually a temporary rabbit cage for my mini rex, who had just been neutered (seperated him from my female).
my pouched rat's cage was a ferret nation 142, and before that it was a midwest ferret playpen with extra ledges (that he enjoyed destroying). My other videos show both cages he lived in.
Bite? Never. He even accepted food from and would lick my son, who was 2 years old when he died. Even complete strangers were fine with him (which I was always told they were a 1-person rat, and would attack other people. He proved that wrong time and time again).
So how did you house him, if he could chew through wires and wood? I used to have domesticated rats and I've always been curious about the pouched rats.
matisse passed away not my son.. my son was 2 years old when matisse died. my other videos show his cage off, but he lived in a ferret nation 142. before that he lived in a midwest ferret playpen with extra levels. He would go back to his cage so he never tried to escape it.
Wow. I gotta say, this surprised me how cute this vid was. it looks like a mix between a rat, kangaroo, and little dog (maybe just because my dog walks on her back legs like that sometimes :P)
I don't think I'd do well with a raccoon, honestly. I've been keeping rats as pets for 14 years of my life, and feel most comfortable around them. Matisse was, basically, a large species of rat. He just had a wild streak that domestic little rats don't have (fourth generation captive bred, but he definitely was still a wild animal, just VERY sweet and affectionate).
Where did you get him? From a breeder? He's beautiful. I've never seen that breed in a pet store before. You're very good with him, I couldn't even get mine to use a litter box. I guess I lack patience :)
adorable! i have a huge love for rats. own two fancy rats. one on the verge of dying. from old age though so no worries really he'll be better off soon. the other rat i have she's very young. not even a year old yet and she is learning things very quickly =] friendly too so im glad. but 5 stars for the video its just too adorable =^_^=
He's not a marsupial, he was a rodent. An african species of rodent (called "pouched" because he had cheek pouches like a hamster. normal rats don't have cheek pouches to store food with)

Uh, no, by sniffing them out. They're highly intelligent and are light enough not to detonate the mine, unlike dogs.

i agree with you that you want to overturn that silly law. he was so talented. did he bite?
roark20 3 years ago
Bite? Never. He even accepted food from and would lick my son, who was 2 years old when he died. Even complete strangers were fine with him (which I was always told they were a 1-person rat, and would attack other people. He proved that wrong time and time again).

i am so sory about your sons death.
roark20 3 years ago
her son didnt die, matisse did!
lilbeatch 3 years ago
So how did you house him, if he could chew through wires and wood? I used to have domesticated rats and I've always been curious about the pouched rats.
avantibarbari 3 years ago
matisse passed away not my son.. my son was 2 years old when matisse died. my other videos show his cage off, but he lived in a ferret nation 142. before that he lived in a midwest ferret playpen with extra levels. He would go back to his cage so he never tried to escape it.

He was beautiful! What a wonderful rat! How old was Matisse when he died?

i want a pouched rat, but i dont think id trust one in my house!
lilbeatch 3 years ago
Wow. I gotta say, this surprised me how cute this vid was. it looks like a mix between a rat, kangaroo, and little dog (maybe just because my dog walks on her back legs like that sometimes :P)
RissaRoo77 3 years ago
maybe you should try getting a raccoon for a pet as they are extremely smart too
theconqueror 3 years ago
I don't think I'd do well with a raccoon, honestly. I've been keeping rats as pets for 14 years of my life, and feel most comfortable around them. Matisse was, basically, a large species of rat. He just had a wild streak that domestic little rats don't have (fourth generation captive bred, but he definitely was still a wild animal, just VERY sweet and affectionate).

supersexypirateninja 3 years ago
Where did you get him? From a breeder? He's beautiful. I've never seen that breed in a pet store before. You're very good with him, I couldn't even get mine to use a litter box. I guess I lack patience :)

bukkinghamcumber 3 years ago
that's because they are both marsupials LOL
Kayota69 3 years ago
He's not a marsupial, he was a rodent. An african species of rodent (called "pouched" because he had cheek pouches like a hamster. normal rats don't have cheek pouches to store food with)

They are using the toilet and now you are teaching them to walk upright? Prepare to bow down to our new overlords of the earth.
