  • So basically, Bre Pettis stole the idea and used it to found a company. Nice

  • Reprap + Moore's Law = The creation of man's technological child. You thought god made things well? Just wait till you see this thing!

  • I am in the works of building one.

  • everyone with money can do this!

  • shame theres no such thing as soder,, the word is solder

  • For those wanting to get a reprap but don't have the time to either collect the pieces or those that don't have the time to assemble a kit. We sell the Mendel in kit form or a fully functional ready to go unit. There is a backorder so get on the list. Contact me dragon@in-tch.com with the subject line Mendel. The kit will run you around $1100.00 US and a fully functional unit will run you around $1700.00 US. Shipping costs will very.

  • I want one. I need to print some stuff which would cost hundreds of dollars to buy.

Someone know how much the material costs?

  • RepRap!

Can you imagine groups of RepRap owners making larger objects as a collaborative efforts!

I've seen small objects on thingiverse, it will be great when larger things are made!

    RepRap #1 makes parts A through E,

RepRap #2 makes parts F through L, etc!

Result: An open-source automobile! (I know, that's almost too optimistic!)

  • I can see it coming now - Every house hold will have its own 3D Printer. Your online stores will sell you a downloadable design and you print it yourself. :)

  • @guerd87

Or FREE (as in beer) open-source designs.

  • @guerd87 By 2020 my house will have 10 to 20. I hate waiting. :-)

  • One way boards get fried is from sticking ya grubby static charged fingers all over their IC's. Its unlikely with those chips but its a bad habit none the less.. Just saying..

  • replicators

  • cupcake!

  • What part of this video shows how to do something?

  • Lol. I can see these in stores one day.

  • so, does it replecate similar to a nylon layering system?

  • Wow.. I can't wait until we design a machine that can produce anything and everything that we design for ourselves. That could quite possibly save the world and bring us to a new level of technological evolution.

  • That's what TheVenusProject is trying to do!

  • The funny thing is that it can "print" itself!!

  • Me neither..

You should look into the venus project and the zeitgeist movement.. This is in the same spirit.

  • Yes. I am aware of those. Have you looked into the singularity? I feel like these schools could all be merged.

  • Only a bit, i have researched Ray Kurtzweil a little. Very interesting.

  • @seanotube85 that will be the day we can download illegal hardware online

  • @seanotube85 no more money! everything would be free!!!!!!!!!!

  • woah

  • If only it could put the parts together!

  • just a question about the temperature prob.. what did you coat it in to make it waterproof? is it a thermistor? if so, whats the specs on it? thnx!

  • I want to try it, sounds so awesome.

  • hahaha, the guy below me said reprape, hahaha. its called reprap. hahahahaha. but, this robot sounds cool. good luck with it! btw, where are the updates? its been a while since u posted this vid.

  • reprape sounds awesome!

  • neural networks?

  • wait, so is he saying that reprap is a project to create robots that can reproduce themselves?

  • Sounds so :S But only with plastics lol :P

  • "I must have, you know screwed up the soldering, or maybe put something in backwards" - should also be aware that circuit boards shouldn't be touched with anti-stat sheets, static electricity can be enough to ruin em :)

  • this could also lead to our apocalypse from smart nano bots

  • reprap sounds like an extremely advanced concept and useful

  • omfg..that zack guy is so gay...

  • Dear God please let me make a RepRap...please!

  • "everyone can make one of these"<--BS most people can't handle self checkout.

  • I agree!

  • Eh, dont be such a downer. Anyone that wants to try probably can.

  • @helliott123 lol@flying cars

  • @helliott123 i think he is implying anyone with common sense

  • Bre pettis is hilarious, it appears he wishes to give the veiwer a high five.

  • what is an arduino?

  • type of programable board can be used to do loads of things

  • print uranium? you horribly misunderstand a lot of things.

  • Zach Hoeken is a Vimeodude.

  • wait, where is the printer?

  • its more of a "molder" then a printer. it makes more robot parts out of plastic by layering them ontop of eachother. the point is to make robots that can make more robots

  • it cant assemble itself. only make 60% of its parts.

  • It could print the parts for a future machine that could assemble itself.

Humans reproduce but they can only produce 60% of their proteins. The other proteins are freely available in our environment.

  • interesting.

humans are more complex than the proteins, whereas to construct a reprap needs a complex human.

So, at this point a reprap is more like a virus (or prion?) - "tricking" humans into assembling & feeding it.

i do hope they acheive true von-neuman machines at some point :)

  • I got that LED fan from my homemade computer that i made with my uncle. Its looks so cool but im going to try it when it is dose to see if it realy works (no I am not a geek)

  • Bre , u ROCK!

  • so, this is pretty much how to make a 3d printer?

  • yourabadthinker

    (reality loves nerds)

  • i hate you, you turd

  • 8h!

  • Its the beginning of the end! Once they can reproduce themselves, why will they need us? lol

  • I don't get it. Making plastic parts is one thing but how is it going to make ICs and motors to really replicate itself?

  • thats the next step, make a robot that can create plastic parts, plus all the hardware and motors AND assemble itself, ITS THE FUTURE!

  • You mean the robot can build another identical robot out of nothing?

  • well no, obviously something can't be made of nothing, but when it has sufficient material it can make itself

  • not yet...soon

  • very mature

  • hey hey

  • Wow. You should get one of them on the next mission to mars, swarm the planet and terraform it.

  • its not quite mature enough for that. even nasa doesn't seem to fully appreciate this kind of technology. They should be funding the shit out of reprap, it will save them a lot of money if they're really serious about setting up useful outposts on the moon etc.

  • i think Bre Pettis's eyebrows are getting bigger!!

  • they are gonna take over like irobot...i warned you guys...last warning...

  • This sounds like the first step to the robot/human Armageddon...

  • Lol, i know the guy who came up with "Make Magazine" becuase his daugher is in my class.

  • Wow. This is not a weekend project.

  • That's why it's in parts.

  • agreed

  • i wish they redo the intro DAM MY EARS ARE RINGING!

  • the atmega chip on the adrino doesn't have pwm?

  • It does, but not high power. Since it's for the heating element, I'm guessing that's the issue.

  • hey whats the url for the adrino?

  • arduino dot cc

    Or just look at google

Or search for "Intro to arduino" at makezine podcasts at Youtube.

  • Two motors!

    ...

    Spinning!

  • at 3:59 is that a knex gear?

  • You're disgusting

  • I apologize.. it was only a friendly jab

  • This project is nice. Keep up the good work dudes!

  • I think u should do what people (Like us) can easily make like thec foxholeradio, and the spud gun, things ewith soldier makes it more complicated.

  • make easy stuff like the spudzooka

  • The potential for this type of technology is immense. If you use recyclable materials and your location has a machine that can create items on demand, you will be able to take broken or worn items and turn them into new ones. Consider a person in another country that creates a design that you like, and it is available for you to download and create in your own home. It will allow us to move away from a model that uses centrally created goods that then need to be transported to end users.

  • heh wen he starts it looks like his head is floating

  • YOU CAN ALLREADY BUY THEESE COMMERCIALLY

    (for 5000 $)

  • Were

  • when i glanced i thought the vid said "rewrap robot" as in rewrap gifts, since the christmas season is here... but this is much cooler :p

  • you lost me on this project.

  • It's a 3d Printer.

Mainly for representations of engineering, or even 3d models to figures if the printer is built to add plenty of detail.

  • a shoutout to the metalab, vienna!!!

(from a short distance from the metalab, vienna. :))

    cool project, ya rule! :)

  • I wonder if anyone's trying to print free energy machines with the RepRap.

  • Sounds cool. I'm sad I'm not geeky enough to know anything about this kind of thing. lol Back to origami for me.

  • Favorited! This is one of the coolest projects I have seen on here since I subscribed. I'll definitely continue watching this and hoping for the best. I'm not exactly a programming guru of any kind, but I have a background in Avionics with the Marines. (that and being a handy man helps) In short, I'm stoked, excited, and can't wait for more.

  • So you want to make robots that can basically have children oh crap here comes the end of humans, just kidding have fun 5*.

  • lol yes. makes me think of skynet just a bit

  • nice bro

  • iv got thoes blue led fans in my computer

  • i want to make this so bad but i cant soder and im afrade a dont have enought money

  • Soldering ain't such an advanced skill :) You don't need any special classes. A friend who knows how to solder would teach you in no time.

  • lol its not hard at all i learnet when i was doing a robot corse at school and they just said heres your board put this here and do this and i did. easy :). im sure theres alot of touriouls out there google it or somthing

  • I saw a solder gun at the dollar store.

  • Look for "Soldering tutorial" at the makezine website. It's a 19min video podcast. There are also many other soldering tutorials at makezine.

  • I've also been interested in the RepRap for a long time now this project is awesome. How much is this project?

P.S. An easy weekend project would be a Jacobs ladder. Pretty much all you need is a high voltage transformer.

  • My father was the owner of a foundry and about 15 years ago his foundry made parts for a prototype of this in texas.

  • I've been really interested in RepRap so this is perfect!

  • Thats amazing! I want to make a robot like that, but its just too difficult for me ;_;

    nice that things sick

  • I just ordered a board for the first time (for a project of my own). Sh*t's not cheap. How can y'all afford to do all this stuff?

  • They get paid to do this. That's how.

  • They get paid to do this now, but what I mean is how could they have afforded to get to the point where they were good enough to get paid to do this or start a magazine based on it?

  • Working for hourly wages and saving the money that didn't go into rent (cuz clearly Bre doesn't eat.) That's my method anyways.

  • Perhaps his first project was a photosynthesizing array that he can interface with his body so that he doesn't have to eat.

  • Yes. I have believed for quite sometime that we are surrounded by mad scientists. My proof is that I have seen a working flamethrower made from legos.

  • 0.0 waw

    that was cool!

  • It's all so..beautiful.

  • awesome top 10 comment! again, awesome video!

  • Really Cool!

  • that... was... kinda confusing... yeah

i'll wait for the entire project to be uploaded, and then get started... oh man...

  • Me too. I want to see what that thing will look like, when done, to then decide if I may try to do something similar.

  • Nice project, i'll start saving...

Part two is next week? Or the next time you hit Austria?

  • Holy reprap, batman!

I will probably not be doing this, but I will be following your progress eagerly!

  • Lol 4th but thanks Makemagazine!

  • Sweet 3rd comment

  • i seen that printer in future house thing i seen it print a duck out lol

  • happy turkey day!! first comment!
