Such a different dave gahan back then. You can tell he's lost himself. Still sexy as hell however...go ahead.. take off that jacket and fall to those knees!!!!!!!!
I've seen every DM tour since 1988, and "Higher Love" is by far my all-time favorite opening. But I like the dance intro here, and I can't overstate how odd it was at the time to see them take the stage with Alan on drums. Alan had tinkered with drums before, but this is the first time they employed the traditional rock band stage setup that they unfortunately still use today.
@SUMNERify what planet are you on exactly? Fletch has little or no input into MAKING records with DM, and very little to do on tour also. Three finger keyboard presses is something a child can do.
If Fletch left, I doubt anyone would care a shit. Alan was the trained musician and a shame he felt he had to leave.
But DM rolls on and hoping the rumours aren't true that they are doing one more album in 2/3 years time and thats it.
@macsmurf78 Actually sumnerify is correct: Andrew Fletcher is the unsung hero of DM. It was Fletch who was able to help the band re-group after Alan left. Fletch also supported and encouraged Martin to take over writing duties when Vince Clarke left the band in 82. Maybe Fletch isn't a great musician like Alan, Dave, or Martin are, but his positive influence and keen business sense has been instrumental to DM flourishing for three decades now.
That's right. Lucky those who could go and enjoy Devotional Tour... It's a massive gig. Dave was so freakin' fantastic ! Love especially his deep vocals then... amazing !
It's interesting to see Dave's stage presence and performance in the earlier stage of the Devotional tour (i.e. 1993)and compare it to the tour in 1994 concert in Biloxi, especially. Wasn't this the Exotic tour? Dave is much more fucked up on the Exotic tour than in the earlier part of the Devotional tour.
Unfortunely Fletch was sick, stress, alcool, life inside the band was terrible at this time. Daryl Bamonte replace him on this part of tour (PS his brother plays in The Cure). It's a very bad time for fans who love DM and the future 'llbe more tragical...
Barmonte notouriously keyboard pleant arts over the course of a week, in a hotel room in Hawaii, teacheed by an ehausted - suffere a nevrous breakdown - Fletcher.
un eccellente dave gahan,da vera star dannata, cocaina, eroina e gli altri mille problemi, però secondo me il devotional è stato il miglior tour dei depeche,e non solo io lo paragonerei allo zootv degli u2!!!!!!!
@dep1001 Devotional's "Higher Love" is one of my favorite show openers of all time. But Rush might be my favorite song on SOFAD, so it's a toss up lol.
btw the album should be out at the end of this year (nov 08) tour should be in 2009 early and people are saying it could start with a apperance in canada I HOPE DM FOREVER
Did you mean '94? saw them too! and the night before at Irvine Meadows. I think they were at their best musically at the time in their carreer. I prefer Dave's voice before he had vocal lessons and was on heroin ( I know it's fucked up to say) to the voice he now uses at his shows. Where are you from? I'm from Fontana
My bad. I did mean the year 1994. I am originally from Los Angeles, CA, born & raised. I am currently living in NC (since '04). Have divorced recently & might be moving back. And you are correct in saying Depeche was at their best musically during this period. By the way did you attend any of the five nights they played at the Forum in November of '93. Awesome. Thanks for posting.
leprechaun I don't see it the same way...Dave is at his peak. He took everything to the extreme back then and I'm glad he survived...took rock god all the way and came out clean...awesome task.
He was at his peak, he performed awesomely. He did take rock god all the way and came out clean but I know even he would admit that it wasn't an awesome task. In some ways he didn't come out clean (without damage). He talks about the horrors of that life. You can hear it in his own words in interviews that he was living at a disgusting level and there was nothing glam about it. That it wasn't him that got him clean. I saw it an interview, it was very powerful! I like your point though.
wwjerry13...yeah, I really shouldn't try to glamorize what he went through. But he is amazing and this latest tour just blew my mind as to how healthy he was and performed after all. Devotional Dave is crazy.
During the second leg of the tour, called Summer/Exotic Tour, they used a one level stage because of playing in different, smaller venues than the first leg. And also because they travelled a lot and was cheaper to "build" a more simple stage...
They also changed the first song (Rush instead Higher Love) and introduced some new songs (as the amazing, reworked I Want You Now) and some other changes (Martin sung Condemnation, for example).
@kindgott Dave also didn't want to be down on the stage by himself. He wanted the support of having the rest of the guys closer. Dave has said several times that he doesn't really like being out front all alone lol.
depeche Nails indeed! the most rocking DM ever were. Such a shame to see Dave so wrecked tho. Clearly off his nut! If anyone can find it check out the Holmdell USA '94 version.

I think both are great intros for a concert...
This is more powerful, and HL is more dreamy.
On the last tour I would have preferred another intro, the instrumental piece was very poor to introduce the guys...
Let's see the opening for the Tour Of The Universe!

They said they will open the tour in Israel because of the loyalty to the fans when they had to cancel last time they supposed to play there.
At least Fletch said so in one of the interviews. But I am not worried I will definitely see them in Prague and Vienna or London like last time.
