Ever since I found this youtube, I listen to this singing everyday and it bless me like the Lord is really lifting me up. I cry for the joy with of salvation. May the Lord bless every Samoan with His bounteous love.
The women are Catholic because they stood up to receive Holy Communion. The Catholic Church does not permit non-Catholics to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. I tend to disagree with that because although Catholic, I have attended services at an Episcopal Church and they welcome me and permit me to receive their Communion. It's probably a law that was written in the 1960s during Vatican 2. It should be changed so that people of all religions may receive Communion in our church too.

God is offended by receiving Him on "dirty" hands(ONLY priest can touch Him) in the Holy Eucharist!
Only accepted by Heaven form of receiving living Heart of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist of the Catholic Church is into our mouth and on our both knees!
When i was growing up in the 50's and 60's it was not only a common practice at mass , for ladies to wear hats but was expected, even required. girls had to wear beenies ( a cloth hat )
I think this is the prettiest version I've heard...thank you for sharing. I remember the nuns teaching us this song back in the 7th grade. They made us miss recess two days in a row to practice this song because we were not trying hard enough to hit the high notes...(laughs!!)
@peter10sep86 - Hmm good question?, My guess is the ladies wearing hats are representing another religion or denomination as some samoan churhes such as Methodist for e.g. commonly wear hats however extremely uncommon for Catholics. Some guests/dignataries may even be atheist but are paying their respects to Cardinal Pio.
It IS common for Catholics to wear hats during Mass... depending upon where in the world you live. In the USA, for instance, women wore hats, always, to Mass up until Vatican II. When those Pre-Vatican II women began to die off, hats all but disappeared from Mass. They are making a come back though.
umm that is so incorrect it was NOT hat at all....they were told to cover there head (women) in mass as to respect our Blessed Mother Mary and also respect for Jesus with a cloth and its nothing to do with the Vatican.
@peter10sep86 Certainly the women wore hats to respect our Blessed Mother and Jesus, however, if you enter a Catholic church in my area, hats are NEVER worn, and, haven't been worn since Vatican II. I don't think that's a coincidence. Further, I've found, in my travels, that it is entirely dependent upon the priest as to what rules are followed. My grandmother's church in Chicago utilized the Communion Rail until about ten years ago. They didn't wear hats, though.

@jeromejnr73 It is a custom in the Catholic Church that women cover their heads when at Mass.....This was relaxed during the years following Vatican II. It is still followed in Samoa, Tonga, and some places in Hawaii...the covering could be a hat or a veil.....Most polynesians will still wear hats at church even at night...
@jeromejnr73 if they are receiving the sacrament of the holy eucharist, they probably are Catholics. Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according the provisions of canon law. .
@jeromejnr73 . It is common practice in the South Pacific Islands [Samoa, Tonga and others] for women to wear hats to church. Many of the Pacific Islanders who have moved to New Zealand still continue that practice.
@jeromejnr73 No actually in the old days women had to have head coverings when in church...such as a chapel veil, a pillbox cap, or a hat. It was a sign of respect.
@jeromejnr73 Before the second Vatican Council, the Catholic ladies were also not allowed in church without their head covered. Now, we have that freedom to cover your head or not. It is not a representation of what religion or not. It was how it was before your days.....??? Please research if you are not sure before you make such comments.
@peter10sep86 Its just an old reverend belief to cover your head in the house of God, but not required. Sisters used to wear habits, but now they don't. My older female relatives used to wear a scarf in church. Men did not, to show they aren't Jews and have no yamulka. Great song!!
@peter10sep86 - At this funeral for the Cardinal, many representatives of other churches were in attendance to pay their respects to the Head of the Catholic Church in Samoa. The EFKS and Methodist women were the ones wearing the hats in the video as per their churches dress codes. There were also the wives of politicians from American Samoa and Samoa who were also there. The lady in the black hat is the wife of the Governor of American Samoa. It was like a state funeral for the Cardinal.
@peter10sep86 It's quite common for women in Polynesia to wear hats to church (although you are correct that it is uncommon in the Catholic Church). In the past, females were required to cover their heads while in the church, usually with a veil, however this is no longer a requirement but I have noticed that veils (and hats) are starting to reappear. It is a beautiful custom here in Hawai`i. The hats are usually hand woven and fresh flowers or feather bands are added to adorn the hat.
To my sisters and brothers in Christ in Samoa: I love this version of "I am the Bread of Life" in your beautiful language!!!! I hope to visit your beautiful land someday and attend mass amongst you!
Anyone know if this full recording, or any others by this choir, can be purchased? This is the most beautiful recording of this song I have ever heard.

I know the question is vague, but try to do your best.
How has the Catholic religion affected the Polynesian people, positive, negative or both? How has it changed their culture?
