I wonder what ever happened to them? Has anyone ever been able to find out more about Supremes? After all, the monumental failure of rock and roll to influence post-war America makes it hard to know just what became of these obscure groups....... o_O
This very interesting Whats My Line? appearance is from the "1966" not 1965 I remember because Diana is wearing an exact dress that I had previousely bought my self it was beige with gold trimmings (even on black-white tv, I am sure it was also same colors as mine).
@ucagetit I was thinking the same thing. I know Diana is the lead singer and all but they could've at least gotten seats for Mary & Flo; I thought that was very rude and very "ungentleman-like" of the crew which I feel like were more than likely all men
@awarren92 They did this all the time when they had mutiple guests. If you watch the episode with The McQuire sisters they don't have seats for all three.
Did Diana say to John at the end "you should come see us?" And John's reply was "no?" Odd how they were treated. Not one gentleman/gentlewoman embrassed them, kissed their cheek, hand nothing. I find it odd really odd.
@nickelwindow53 Not true. People like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Sammy Davis Jr., and Pearl Bailey were on earlier than this, plus I'm sure I've seen others whose names are escaping me...not to mention the occasional non-celebrity contestant.
@roots66 aw, i didnt know. I will check those episodes. I know when the brought the 70s version back there were African Americans. I will look for the earlier episodes.
@roots66 joe louis and sugar ray robinson and ralph bunche and many others/ people are often shocked at how many people of color who apperared on tv back in the sixties, they just don't remember
@roots66 I found the ones with Mahalia Jackson and Jesse Owens ( the one with him was especially moving)...Sammy did it a few times...one of my favorits
Flo does indeed nudge Mary after Diana's answer. Flo looks around for a second to see if anyone is looking then nudges Mary's hand at 2:06. Lol it was really funny and Diana's sitting there just a grinning.
Calvin375...anything and everything I could find on the Supremes I've read. I have quite a few books and scrap books from yester year. Florence was something else but you know its amazing the three different individual personalities that became Supremes. Florence seemed to be really irritated with Diana and her single minded ways. Mary dealt with it but Flo spoke out and lost in the end.
I didn't catch that little part where Flo slightly nudge Mary and Mary looks down and Flo then smiles after the leading lady explanation. Now that was classic. Diana really thought it was all about her and you can tell when the girls first sign on she stood there for a second engulfing the applause. Whew...she must've been hell to deal with when the group became famous.
@Vincent50 I saw that nudge the first time and had to play it back to see if I saw what I thought I saw and I laughed to myself! Have you ever read any of the books?!!! She was hell on wheels!!!
Don't mean to be negative, but why is it that each one of the Supremes are able to generate more charisma in this little few minute clip than most artists are today with all of their dancers and pyrotecnics in a two hour show. Maybe I'm just old.
This is from 1966 so I was mistaken to think it was from 1965. I like how the guy next to Arlene Francis is fancinated by Mary and he is all smiles with her and chatting a few words to her before he gets to Flo. They all look beautiful but Mary seem to draw the men as she always had.
Thanks for the upload.I wasn't aware that they had an earlier appearence on What's My Line.A regular panelist Dorothy Kilgallen died in Nov.,1965.and this must be after this.A lot of speculation concerning her death, but this would be a distraction.
Did you notice Flo didnt like the "oui" from Diana on the "a leadling lady question....@2:03 look Flo tapping Mary's arms..and looking like what the F*ck she say....then going into the million dollar smile.
@supremes1964 are you seeing things? Flo didn't tap anyone. I can't stand when people add drama that's clearly not there. Especially when it comes to the Diana camp versus the Flo camp.
@supremes1964 I finally saw what your were referring too. And I guess it's possible. But to me it looks like Flo moved her arm and just happened to brush against Mary and Mary looked down. But I never saw Flo look at Mary, She did however smile. But as we all well know Diana was a Diva and even then considered herself a Leading Lady. I think by this time there was some animosity, especially between Flo and Diana. Too bad we can't get Mary to tell us what really happened that night.
@PatrickLHawkins ...not my intent to make something of nothing. Flo looks beautiful here and there was Animosity I agree.. yet the Supremes continued to shine thur July 1, 1967 until Flo got fired.
@supremes1964 i saw it! :-O its kinda shocking to see that i dunno why i guess cuz it was so long before my birth and ive only heard stories about arguments in this band, usually its not talked about much when i look around or ask around of my parents or older people who were alive then
This one must have come before the other one that's on YouTube, before the girls realized their voices are wayyy too easily distinguishable! Mary's soft "oui..." and Flo's confident (nasally?) "OUI." I loved this, thanks for uploading, great quality :-)
It's my understanding that she was still going by "Diane" at the time, but soon enough would adopt Diana. Apparently Diana is the name on her birth cert though...
@ronnykmarshall No... WML went off the air in primetime because of its already long run... the longest of all game shows 17 years. And don't forget its return in daytime, so.....
Do a Google search of "What's My Line" Supremes and
you can find a photograph that someone took from audience level of the Supreme's shaking hands with panel and
behind them an unusual view of the contestant entrance with the rarely-seen-on-TV What's My Line banner (with cartoon plumber) above the entrance. I can think of only twice that it showed up in all the years WML was broadcast on Sunday nights.
He didn't even know Mary and Flo's name.
