My dad was a dispatch rider with 452 in Darwin. He used to make us kids sing their squadron song if we wanted fish and chips or to ride on the Williamstown ferry (Melbourne) in the 50s & 60s. I forget most of the words now but here's a scrap:
My Dad was an RAAF Spitfire pilot with 452 Squadron in the SWPA. He was posted to 'Potshot' at Exmouth, then 79 Sqdn followed by 452 Sqdn. This footage is brilliant and I sincerely thank you for uploading it. To see these Spitfires in formation is a real treat especially hearing the sound of those Merlins. Your written description is also extremely informative. Totally fascinating.
@vaestanfors This information is valued by me. I shall research it on the internet and post it on my description. Thank you sincerely for taking the time to inform me.
Wow..thanks very much to the poster of this video...my Grandfather never talked much about the war....so seeing him in this video was a great surprise!
On 28 March 1943, Truscott was escorting a Catalina flying boat off Western Australia. He made a low practice roll, but misjudged his height: he crashed into Exmouth Gulf and was killed.
My Dad will love to see this posting. 'Paddy' was his cousin and he has fond memories of him during the war returning to see him in Southampton prior to his fateful flight. Thank you.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for posting this video.
Bluey Truscott is in the video. He saved the life of my father who was an army signaller a few times in 1942 at MILNE BAY New Guinea flying Kittyhawks. I would never have been born only for this guy.
There is not very much video around on Truscott, but this is just great to watch.
Actually, correction: he wasn't a superb flier - he was well known for his bad landings. Can't have been that bad though since he shot down so many of the enemy!
So we have ourselves freak in the guise of butterbrains who despite the war being over 60+ years ago still takes it personally. I would insult his intelegence if I thought he had any.
i agree with adamswampy in 1942 de british canadians france belgiums polish tjechs dutch norwegians rusians where already pushing germanny back and the war was already turning in favor of the alies when america was atacked by japan it where the british australian and dutch who declard war on japan so america would have time to regroup and japan had to split his resourses
I guess that WWI which was actually a bigger shock at the time means nothing to you.
And I guess all the Aussie Yankee and Canuck blood spilt to stop your sisters and daughters from being used as sex toys by the Huns means nothing to you too.
You are a moron.

Hi, must be some mistake here.Everyone knows that there were only Americans in the war.
They single-handed defeated the Japs and the Krauts. There was ony one aircraft too - the P51 Mustang.
The fact that the US had only 20 divisions in the Pacific , while in Europe there were 300 and that more bombs fell on Darwin than on Pearl Harbour is pure anti-American propoganda
Hi, USA never declared war on Germany, the reverse is true. Germany declared war on USA a few days after Pearl Harbour.
What I mean by my comments are that to see all the films and flag waving one would think that only USA was in the war. This is far from the case. Thats not bullshit is it?
Only trouble is..the Americans thought WW2 started in 1942,,if The Japs hadn't bombed Pearl Harbour you'd have stayed over there sitting on your fat arses.
Only trouble is, if the US or Australia hadnt helped the Brits, the Brits would have starved and every british girl would be working in a Nazi Brothel.
If the US and Australia and Canada hadnt helped England in 1914 - 1918, every British girl for the last 90 year would have been working in a German Brothel
LordButtercracks - Yes, the U.S. supplied lots of weapons and food during the first and the second world war - and they made damned sure we paid for EVERY bit of food and EVERY bomb, bullet and tank - and got very rich off the proceeds while we bankrupted ourselves paying it all off. And as for your assumption that the Germans would have succeeded in invading and conquering the U.K. if the good old U.S. or A hadn't come to the rescue - sorry mate, but you talking out of your arse.
And you Sir, are right in that you suck Hairy Truckers Ballz!
Without Australian Canadian NZ and US pilots England would have looked very different~ In fact, before Hitler invaded, England would have just starved!
Love all your videos Bomberguy! Particularly the propliners. Great Aussie 452 clip as well. Many people don't know that so many of our squadrons were there from 39-45.
is their any chance you have some footage of Ray Thorold Smith? thanks.

"Remembering the days gone by,
and the lads with whom we flew
...(forgotten line)...
the lads from 452"
(sung to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne")

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Brendan 'Paddy' Finucane, from Dublin, flew with these boys. He'd had 32 confirmed before he went into the channel in 1942.

I think Truscott left a bottle of champagne with the Air Force Club in Melbourne - to open at the end of the war. Sadly this was not to be.

You're a Nob..forget 1914-1918..I was talking about America not entering WW2 until 1942 not about 1917..as you know.
What's this fixation you have with English girls and brothels?..change the record old boy...it's getting very boring.

You're obsessed with WW1 and women being used as sex slaves..so I'm guessing you're an OLD pervert.
My original comment was about WW2, you don't have an answer ..so you're changing the subect.
I therefore command YOU to SHUT THE FUCK UP !
Deeperpurple1952 3 years ago
You need to read some history dude.
WWI in many respects had a larger impact that WWII for the times it took place.
And without the Commonwealth and Doughboys to save the English a*ses things would have been different.

You are a moron. They helped in 1917 without Pearl Harbor. They supplied blood, money, food and other staples, just like Canada and Australia.
Without their help, every British girl would be working in a German or Italian brothel - shudders.
