There are possible explanations for savants and their musical ability; some are discussed in Fundamentals of Piano Practice, free site. However, I don't understand how they acquire the advanced techniques to play the piano. They must not acquire advanced technique instantly; they surely must practice and gradually improve, though they might improve faster than most students (more motivated?). This should be researched by neurologists and musicians for improving methods for teaching piano, etc.

I emailed Adam and he was kind enough to take the time to answer my question which was how Derek developed this ability and he said that it was all hard work in light of the 10,000 hour theory.

It's really not that hard to see when you understand what takes up most of Derek's thought and effort in comparison to most people.

Being that musically talented, on the verge (if not) of being a genius, is hard to find an impairment in this man. Sure he may have disabliities, but many people without them can NOT do this. He is very deifferent and a genius in this way. Awesome human being.
