Excellent video. They work fairly well as a home defense weapon too. With practice reloading is fairly quick both in the field and in a defensive situation.
That single shot without the marking looks pretty identical to my Iver Johnson single shot. The way the stock is made and the overall flow of the gun is almost identical. Only difference is that mine has checkering on it.
Thanks again sackett68! didn't know this was still on here. Its a good video! I have one repeater, an thats an old one, the rest are single shots. These single shots are great guns!
i really like external hammers, the other day i got the opportunity to shoot a double barrel side by side 12 gauge with external hammers, what a blast man i want either a sinlge shot or a double with external hammers. i recently bought a original remmington 870 wingmaster in mint condition, but shooting the external hammers is WAY more fun.
i like these because they are more of a challenge in the sense if you miss your quarry like a fast moving bird you are done shooting and the quarry gets away. i think it adds pressure because you cant just sling lead down range and it makes it more satisfying in my opinion. its also more fair to the quarry
@juicedlemons i just got one today for christmas i really like it in a 12 guage shot about 2 boxes of birdshot and one box of turkey load like it alot nice video, varmints beware!
I like what you have to say. I have several "fancy" shotguns... but when I go quail or rabbit hunting, I always grab my 4lb stevens single shot 20 ga. Because it's light and quick.
i remember my first shotgun a h&r topper jr chambered in 20 gauge i loved that gun so simple so very very reliable and cheap plus u only got one shot so its made me a hellva marksmen because of it there was nothing i chouldnt hunt with it and i learned to get fast at reloading a scond shot if i needed too buy keeping one round in between my middle and 4th finger on my left hand ( if your right handed shooter ) awesome video i currently have an h&r in 45/70 great gun and accurate enough
I dont see single shot as a disadvantage and i thought long and hard about this and i cant remember shooting anything with a shotgun that i didnt hit with the first shot, ive never hit anything with my 2nd or 3rd shot with a shotgun, i have killed everything with the first shot.
@ktktwix I agree, when it comes to most hunting I've done I've either killed what I was shooting at with the first shot or missed and a second shot probably wouldn't have been an option anyway. The only time I feel like i need a second shot is when I am bird hunting and the chance for a double comes up. Thanks for watching!
@sackett68 yup I usually either hit with the first shot or miss with all of them. so i dont see there being a point to a shotgun holding more then one shell if I'm only going to hit with the first shot anyway, that is unless there is more then one bird.
Hey I'm a 13 year old kid looking for a good shotgun with my dad. Would you recommend this or an over-under? We would probably only trap, target, and skeet shoot (usually skeet). I have shot a 20 gauge semi-automatic before. I love the look of a single shot, except shooting doubles would be impossible. Unless we got two shotguns :D
@bigfoot519 In my opinion, the over and under would be a better choice for skeet and trap shooting. Just because you have the ability to make a quick second shot if needed, like in the case of shooting doubles. But for just about any other purpose the single shot does quite well. Thanks for watching! And have fun shooting with your dad!
Good vid. I've got a 12ga. NE firearms that I took to the range yesterday and shot a gallon jug @ 100yards (rifled slug) on the second shot with nothing but the front bead sight. I suprised myself and everyone at the range. They are tough as nails and a bargain hunter.
@MichaelkSimmons beware i had one chambered in 3 inch i bought some high brass 3 inch mags for it and u deffenatley best have a recoil pad of some sort mine would kick so bad it would literally take your breath but awesome gun never the less
I remember one time I was going on a Turkey shoot with a local gun group and I brought my Remington Baikal 20 gauge. every one else had more expensive pump shotguns with fancy tactical doodads. They kept on ribbing me until I came back with more turkey then all of them together. On top of that 3 of them had malfunctions that disabled their shotguns. lol
I love H&R products and because they are cheap and with a few after market gizmo's(sights etc.) they are quit servicable as a hunting arm.And if you add some brass tacks you can mountainman 'em up. and the 410 is a great squirrel gun w/ 3" no5;s ,enjoyed the vid
@bugg255 Thanks for the comment. I saw a article in Backwoodsman magazine where a guy put some brass tacks on his single shot shotgun and it looked great!
Hi nice old four ten shotgun. It is hard to tell from a video so I may be wrong and your assessment correct.... but I'm pretty sure it is a savage single shot. I have two, one in twenty and one in four ten and they look identical to yours as best I can tell from the video. Thanks for the video I enjoyed it, nice to see I'm not the only one stuck on old technology.
@lugerstonecock Thanks for the input. It may very well be a Savage. I know that Savage made a lot of these type of shot guns so you could be correct. And yes I do have a tendency to like "old" technology. I figure it has been put to the test and held it's own whereas a lot of "new" stuff has yet to prove itself. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you. Very informitave. I like how you covered the variable uses for the gun. Even home defense. I think my next gun puchace will be a H&R 20 gauge. One day maybe my daughter will use it as well.
Hey, im new to hunting and the same 12 gauge you have is the one that i just bought as my first gun. For now, do you feel like it would be a good gun to hunt deer with? and should i put a scope on it?
@carlosm305 I think that it cold work ok for deer if you keep the shots under 50 yards. I have tried shooting Foster type slugs,(traditional style slugs) out of mine and the accuracy left a lot to be desired. A better choice would be to buy the fully rifled slug barrel for it and shoot sabot-ed slugs through it. But if you keep the distances short, it should get the job done. Thanks for watching!
@carlosm305 As far as a scope goes, I personally wouldn't bother putting a scope on a non rifled barrel myself. But if you do get the rifled barrel for it than a scope would be a great addition.
With all the fancy (& ridiculously expensive) O/U shotguns out there, there is DEFINITELY a market for a decent Single shot break-open shotgun that HAS AN EJECTOR. It should cost no more than US $300 & be high quality--y'know, last a lifetime. I want one in 20 gauge
@ntrudr800 I agree 100% I would like to see a nice high quality single shot produced here in the US. I think they would sell quite well. Also H@R single shots actually do have ejectors. H@R use to make a deluxe topper model with walnut stocks that was quite nice looking but I am not sure if they still make it or not.
@sackett68 YES they make the Topper Deluxe Classic. Often I'm attracted to long arms in the Carbine configuration. I just cannot imagine walking around with a 41+ inch long rifle or shotgun. Enter the Topper Junior Classic. I suspect the fit & finish on H&R firearms is basic. Without all the fancy stuff like the O/U shotguns for example $, I should be able to pick one up in a short while :) It seems to me that a high-quality fancy single shot would cost US $550
@runhorun Hmmm... H&R has the Tamer & the Tamer 20 which have pistol grips that hold 3-4 shells! I would think the grips are interchangeable--I recommend giving H&R a call to get the specifics if you are planning on swapping stocks. If you don't already own one then consider the Tamer & Tamer 20. Now the Topper has a recoil pad :))) If I were stuck in the woods with a Tamer 20 I'd have a big gay smile on my face and probably be naked so don't look for me LOL Hahahahahaha XD
@ntrudr800 I have a .410 single-barrel break action with an ejector. Considering the fact that it's like 70 years old, I'm surprised the gun itself works at all!
The older gun looks very much like an old Iver Johnson .410 I toted as a kid. And I squirrel hunt today with a N.E.A. "Pardner" 12 gauge. Hard to beat the light weight for carrying all day in the field or woods.
Thanks for the great videos. i have 3 single shot shotguns. 1 is a 410 i got for $50 at a gun show, the second is a 12 ga. that i shortened (Barrel is 18.5 in. and buttstock is pretty much cut off) i use it for home defense, and the third is a 20 ga. that i keep in my truck, i love them all because there simple, cheap, but usefull
Thank you, I love these shotguns. I have a semi, over and under and pump but I love the challenge of knowing you got one chance to put your game to rest or its gone. It just forces you to be a better marks man and hunter period. If you can't kill the game in the first shot it deserve it's right to live.
thanks for the video. I'm 45 and just starting to hunt again. I looked at some pumps but it just seemd like too much gun si i went with the Pardner...My wife can use this for defense easily as well if I'm away. You can fire plugs with this for deer?
@tuckerdutch I think you will appreciate the simplicity of the single shot. And yes you can fire Foster type slugs out of it. Even better you can buy a fully rifled slug barrel with sights from H@R, that will fit your shot gun too.
i have a sawed off one i found in a bush near my home. must of been there for about a week. it wasent shot. i have a feeling it was going to be used but the guy ditched in the last second. its mine now haha.
@Arcaenon In most states it's fine if your gun isn't registered, it's just highly suggested just in case it gets stolen or if you do/are going to use it for self defense.
@Arcaenon yea i should ditch the thing or turn it in to the police. cant go shooting with it because alot of people would most likely snitch on me or worse a cop.
I have a single shot 12g I use for home defence. I attached a sling, a bright flashlight and have a extra shell carrier(nylon, 5 shell capacity) that slips over the buttstock. I am planning on having the barrel shortened in the near future to help accomodate the narrow areas in my house. Good gun otherwise. Kicks like a mule.

Hey sackett68, thanks for some great videos! just watched the one on canoe knives, great video! I'm not really a knife collector but I do own several just got a dandy from basspro! How about some on shootin those single shots? Thanks! Ranger5070
@Ranger5070 Thanks for watching. I am planning on doing some shooting videos in the future I just have to make some time to do them. But I will definitely take the ol single shots out for sure.
I'm a huge fan of single shots. You can't beat them for simplicity, ease of carry and dependability. If your budget is closer to Ralph Kramden than Ralph Lauren, get a single shot.
Just found your video, I like this one. The old timer you have is a Iver Johnson champion. They where some of the best! We have the single shots, great guns! hunt with them all the time. Thanks for the video sacket68! Its a good'n! Ranger5070
My favorite type as well along with the side by side double. Single shots are wonderful and easy to carry. I agree with you, with some practice and with the automatic ejector, you can reload the single shot about the same speed you can work a pump if you put the butt stock shell holder on the end. Great video, thanks for sharing! :)
i have a winchester model 370 single shot 20 gauge chamberd for three inch magnums i like single shots with a little training it isnt hard to be good with them
@frodo70444 I went and checked out your vids, good stuff! That was pretty quick shooting considering you were loading from your pocket. I like to keep a shell holder on the stock of my single shots, it can really cut down on the reload time.
@thebomzdotcom Actually H&R and NEF are both owned by Marlin now ,so I don't believe that there is a difference between the two. I have owned both over the years and I haven't noticed any difference. Thanks for watching!
@thebomzdotcom Yes, they are totally the same in design and function. I always do all the research I can before I buy too. So I don't think it's stupid at all.
@DrShakalu619 I like them I have one on my 12 and one on my other 410. They add some weight of course, but not too bad. Its nice to have that follow up shot right close and handy. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks man, great review

My favorite type as well along with the side by side double. Single shots are wonderful and easy to carry. I agree with you, with some practice and with the automatic ejector, you can reload the single shot about the same speed you can work a pump if you put the butt stock shell holder on the end. Great video, thanks for sharing! :)

@frodo70444 I agree with a little training the single shot is a very viable option for a variety of tasks. Thanks for the comment!

@sackett68 yea i posted a video of me shooting mine today check it out man please let me know what u think
frodo70444 1 year ago
@frodo70444 I went and checked out your vids, good stuff! That was pretty quick shooting considering you were loading from your pocket. I like to keep a shell holder on the stock of my single shots, it can really cut down on the reload time.

hey i am going to get a 12 gage single shot and im thinking h&r but the wal mart by me has a nef is one better then the otther?
thebomzdotcom 1 year ago
@thebomzdotcom Actually H&R and NEF are both owned by Marlin now ,so I don't believe that there is a difference between the two. I have owned both over the years and I haven't noticed any difference. Thanks for watching!

thebomzdotcom 1 year ago
@thebomzdotcom Yes, they are totally the same in design and function. I always do all the research I can before I buy too. So I don't think it's stupid at all.

I really got to get myself a but shell holder.? Are they good?
DrShakalu619 1 year ago
@DrShakalu619 I like them I have one on my 12 and one on my other 410. They add some weight of course, but not too bad. Its nice to have that follow up shot right close and handy. Thanks for watching and commenting!
