I have never seen this anime, but already I get a sense that this anime portrays China as weak and naive, which is accurate during WWII. I wonder how the author would portray China, if China had annihilated Japan today, and brutally massacred millions of Japanese. Would the author present this in a lighthearted way?

China is by no means a "weak" character in the anime Hetalia. He is viewed as the elder brother. Yes, his personality and character design is silly at times, but that does not make a character weak. If we follow your oh so logical assumption of chracters strength based off of design, then these following assumptions also would be made: Harry Potter is a boy therefore he is weak; Frodo is short and stumpy, therefore he is weak.

My family is traditional so my parents and grandparents only show me the 'look how great China is.' but never once how China had also fallen during the cultural civil war. That's because America is biased - China is communist while America has a democracy. Regardless, I enjoy the anime because it can show different sides of the country and its people.
Actually, it doesn't - it portrays him as strong but preferring to use his power in a different way than murder and attacking others, and someone who has a sense of humor. The author doesn't present things like massacres in a lighthearted way, he actually manages to write an emotional strip. And quite frankly, if you don't want China being portrayed as weak and defenseless, I think Hetalia would be a great anime for you.

Also, Hungary was the -first- female character created by Mr Himaruya. And China was created before she was. So yeah, proof enough :D
I really don't know why everybody thinks he's a girl >_> A lot of male characters have long hair and are dubbed by girls...

@SkadiPirate yeah I always knew he was a boy but whenever I show this to a friend they always ask, "that's a girl, right?'... and then I facepalm their face for them. Anyways, if you think about it, I always thought of Vietnam as the female version of China, I mean if you really really look at her, they almost look like siblings at least. But anyways, I digress, I agree with u when you say that China is in fact a boy (btw I'm a girl)

@SkadiPirate I understand what that person's saying, but I think it's more because of his looks and actions. his hair makes him look a bit girly, and they way he acts towards cute things. Also, both his english and japanese voice actors are girls, so that doesn't help. But china's still epic!

Back in the old days, men wear their hair long. It was only in the Qing Dynasty where minority rules that men were required to adapt their hairstyle(front shaved, back braided into a pigtail). Almost thought that my brother and I were the only ones who knew china was a guy the first time we saw him XD
I've seen other characters who looked more girlie than China...such as kurama from yu yu hakusho and he had a female voice actor in the jap dub, but a male voice actor in the eng dub??? Also, kanda from d grey man had longer hair, more slender, and his outfit looked like a dress...yet people could tell he was a guy...
