I'm a knick fan but man, the Pacers have been involved in the most game 7's that I can recall in one decade. 1994 vs Atlanta and NY, 1995 vs NY and Orlando, 1997 vs Chicago.
to test that, pause play right when Smits touches the ball. then hit play and pause again as quickly as you can.. that's the equivalent of .2 seconds unless you're slow or ninja fast. after the first play/pause you will see that no time has yet elapsed from the 1.3 seconds remaining.. of course such discrepancies are part of the game, but if you want to really analyze it he possessed the ball for 1.5 sec with only 1.3 remaining.
ends15 and nbaclassic, i think you are both correct..
i used to tape all the big Magic games and played that last shot over and over. Smits did get the shot off on time, but if you watch closely you will see that the clock didn't start immediately after touching his hands after the inbounds pass. sure it was close and its something you gotta live with, but a good .2 seconds passed before the clock even started. you can't split hairs like that tho with the clock operator.. good call.
the pacers had 3 eastern conference finals series in 94, 95, and 98 in which they were one win away from the big dance. too bad they had to play those game 7's on the road. if they had home court advantage, they could have won them all.
i remember watchin this 14yrs ago (gosh im gettin old) & i couldnt stop laughin @ brian hill's body positioning hopin the shot would go in @ 5:16. great game even though i was routin 4 orlando
That shot at the buzzer by Smits should have counted. The refs made the correct call. If you don't believe me go to theehibachi videos on youtube and go to NBA Furious Finishes (Part 3) and at 5:44-5:48, if you pause it and slow mo it preety good, you can see Smits barely got the ball off in time. The shot counted correctly.
i give both teams credit for being great but man the pacers had no credit with reggie with having the bulls, magic, and knicks ruling the 90's

The Japanese announce team really takes this to another level. It's even better than watching it in English.
