A simple trick to start trangia like alcohol stoves in freezing conditions is to use some chicken fence or metal screen and sandwich a small tuff of fiberglass pink insulation between two pieces of fencing or screen and let it sit inside the trangia just above the fuel level. The insulation acts as a wick and vapourizes the fuel much more quickly.
The screen also sticks well to the inside of the stove.
Nice test. This is like cold fusion. Thanks for sharing.

This is an excellent demo for stoves. People need to do this more often.

@SaviourSole OK - you may not realize it, but ice can be colder than 32*f. In this case the ice was at 0*f.

I use methanol and a army firesteel and the Trangia stove runs instandly, even at -20 C
Firesteels are even keeping your poor fingers at a much safer distance;-)

This type of problem is solved simply by putting your stove and fuel in your coat pocket in winter. Even with hand warmers in an extreme case :o)
