I just watched a horrible site on Animal Planet on how the sharks are taken out of the water, put on the boat, their Fin being cut off with a knife while they are still alive, and then their head being half cut off, and then being thrown back in the water to suffer!!!! All that horror and cruelty for a bowl of shark fin soup! What has the world come to? GREED GREED and more GREED!
I was expecting a video of Gordon trying to make the soup to the standards of some elite restaurant. He's always bashing vegetarians but it's good to see he does have compassion (some) animals.
This practice is barbaric. It boils my blood watching the naivety of the customers: 'oh we don't hear anything about it', 'we don't see that kind of thing': use your fucking brain, it's readily apparent how disgusting this industry is.

@lawnboyinthehood1980 If sharks go extinct the balance in the oceans is radically changed, This is not just in there part of the world it is in all of the world.
You care more about a few fisherman's livelihood and the mob that runs them than an entire species?
@lawnboyinthehood1980 that's amazingly short-sighted; it's not just 'their water' - why the hell do you think Asian commercial fishing boats come all the way to N.A. waters now? They fucked up their own native stocks already (that's not to say American fisherman haven't done the same as well).
To make a long-term change in the shark-fin industry, the movement has to start at the very bottom.
@lawnboyinthehood1980 Are you kidding? You think that when a country is doing something that is not only determental to the plant but also illegal by international laws they should just be allowed to do it anyways? wtf is wrong with you...
Quite hilarious that people emphasize that humans should interact with nature in a more morally and justified manner. Whats funny is that with the unlimited cases of human conflicts that exists locally and globally, we should fix ourselves first before trying to tackle this equally impossible task of social-nature harmony
@KizzleTheBump Why do you to put a huge task above this simple thing, just stop ordering soup, it is not like saving starving children or stopping war, just stop ordering this soup. You say we should keep killing sharks until all the children are fed and the wars have all stopped? Makes absolutely no sense and is a "hilarious" argument for eating Shark Fin.
This shows how much some people care about nature ... at least Gordon cares about nature as any good chef does, a good chef doesn't kill a cow just for the filets, they use the other met to make stew , they use the tongue and cheeks for some delicious dishes, the fat and bones for stock and the tail for soup this is how people should eat... not killing a shark just for the fins or killing a sturgeon just for the kaviar ... mankind makes me sick ...
Why does he get to crap all over the practice, while still eating a bowl? So hypocritical. I don't care which side of this debate you're on, it's complete bullshit to indulge on the stuff and THEN complain about the ethics
@Higgins2001 He had to try it to see if there was any benefit to the dish, to see if there was anything unique to justify the killing of a shark for just the fin. Did you not pay attention to the video? listen to what he says in the car after tasting.
@EnjoyableApps I did indeed pay attention - Ramsay claimed that his disgust for the practice was due to animal cruelty. Surely tasting the dish did not change his perception of what constitutes cruelty. This would be equivalent to me being against child rape since it is cruel - but raping a child just in case it turned out to be pleasurable regardless. It is a logical fallacy and still makes him a hypocrite.
@Higgins2001 I would guess he has done more for sharks by making this video than you will ever do in your life. Tasting it is to get and understanding of the reason why people pay so much for the dish and eat it in the first place. If you support eliminating Shark Finning and you can not see the benefit of what he has done here, then i don't know what to say. Have you heard the term throwing the baby out with the bathwater?
@Higgins2001 The condition of knowledge at this point is: child rape bad, shark fin good. There is no challenging that child rape is bad. However to challenge that shark fin is good, he must try it to at least knock it, or else he isn't exactly basing it on anything. If you want to debate this with logic; everything has to be based on a pre-existing statement, whether a lemma or axiom. He ate one bowl to be able to judge such a practice fairly, nothing more.
@Higgins2001 IMO he was trying to get another perspective on it, tasting it to see what all the "fuss" was about. How exactly did he "indulge" in it? It's always good to get another perspective on something rather than arguing against it whilst having no clue about the other side of the matter.
I don't think it's suitable to compare eating a bowl of soup with raping a child.. If more people thought the way you do there'd probably be more incidences of child rape and murder.
@crazywaffleking First of all, he went into the restaurant knowing he is going to condemn it, he is already biased before even tasting the food. His head is wired to find flaws (just look at his face the entire time). Secondly, it is his personal taste, i personally find chicken/turkey breast bland and chewy, whereas the Americans prize chicken breast. Thirdly, through your comment, I conclude you never tasted shark fin soup so who are you to say it tastes like nothing?
I like shark fin soup for the taste, personally, but you can find equally delightful "mock" shark fin soup for a cheaper price (and you don't kill sharks while you're at it). Then again, I was not born in China therefore I do not understand it's traditional value.
@EnjoyableApps I'm quite fine with your objection to my comment. However, I find it to be extremely offensive that you believe in censory. Not much of an advocate for democracy are you chap?
@capitalismforme Just want to stay on topic. When people come here and see allot of comments that have nothing to do with Shark Finning it is a distraction. it quickly turns into a race issue that is a bit inflammatory and generates allot of posts with four letter words basically becoming a mess.
I don't care where you're from, who you are, or anything like that, but eating shark fin soup is seriously wrong. These creatures are treated with no respect and it disgusts me. I wish others could open their eyes to see how absolutely barbaric this is.
Maybe one day there will be no shark fin soup in the world. That would make me happy.
In 2007, Ramsay admitted arranging for a biker to steal the reservations book from the Aubergine restaurant in 1998 and blaming the theft on Marco Pierre White, because he suspected Aubergine's owners were planning to offer his job to Pierre White
im chinese and i've tried this soup. its really good, but like ramsay said you can eat this soup with things like chicken and it would still taste amazing. i think people should be allowed to drink shark fin soup but i think people should be eating this soup only on special occasions
@AznHockeyMs unfortunately that won't change a thing; we can't just half-ass the regulations, as people will always exploit them. There is little doubt that even if there was a global committment to finning, people would STILL do it illegally because of the money. However, you have to start somewhere; humans are ignorant fucks, and will go on stubbornly doing what they please only until there is some individual consequence. To give them that small window won't solve anything...
@MistahWagwan It would make a difference if he was asian? So you are a racist. Get over it. this is a serious issue and race has nothing to do with it.
I am amazed how people can put there fragile little egos above this serious issue. I know it is hard to understand but this video is about sharks and the balance of life in the oceans and not about you.
@shaochiavang Did you watch the video? It is not obvious? Sharks are endangered, they are used for only there fins, there is no nutritional value to eating shark fin, just some outdated belief. Do you see the difference? Yes you could say eating cows and chickens is bad but we are talking about sharks here. There are other videos on Cows and Chickens on youtube, go watch them if this is your concern. but if you are justifying one wrong with another you are not helping anything.
@shaochiavang I don't eat any meat or wear leather or any animal products. I don't use dairy or any of it, simply because of the way the animals are forced to live.
@shaochiavang Yes I have seen them. What is your point? We do not slaughter a chicken for its foot then through the rest away, do we? Chickens and cows are not endangered species are they? I do not support slaughter houses. What does that have to do with this video? Is this how you solve your problems by pointing out another problem?
@MistahWagwan I agree with you on this one. it is not okay. I also saw and posted videos to facebook on this subject. It is just as evil and cruel. Re: Foie Gras
@MistahWagwan Sharks are threatened with extinction due to overfishing. This is simply a fact and has nothing to do with my complexion.
It is - in my opinion - wrong to exploit a natural resource to the point of extinction. I am entitled to say that because I am a fellow human being.
What a sad and pathetic person you must be to cast this issue as some form of racial entitlement. It saddens me that sharks will probably be driven to extinction by myopia and racism.
@MistahWagwan What country do the sharks live in? This is a global issue that effects our oceans no matter what country you are in. He is doing a good thing, you should try doing a good thing instead of trying to bring those down who are helping.
@EnjoyableApps Jesus guys relax! each one has diff perspective. Of u dont like the video dont watch it. if u have a problem with slaughtering sharks/chickens/cow complain to proper authorities.
@MistahWagwan I know it's about the sharks and the balance in the ocean. Did I say otherwise. And by the way it has nothing to do with being white and I am not racist. I think China has to do some serious cleaning up and this includes human rights.
@MistahWagwan Why? because he cares about our oceans.HI don't get someone how you can badmouth someone who is trying to help the planet. What is wrong with that?
I would move to have thae completely illigal is taking the fin off the shark because sharks should be an endangerd species. So if they are caught doing that to a shark they get arrested.
I've had it before when my father invited old college friends out to eat, but he didn't order because we were late. When we left, he and my mother were discussing how exorbitant the bill was and that it was all because of the Shark Fin Soup. I was surprised to hear we got shark fin soup because I didn't see it anywhere (nor did I undertand the Chinese name). In the end, it turned out to be the dish of ground shark fin noodles and soup.
He does have a heart after all. I like catching fish and eating them. But butchering a shark while it's alive and sending back into the sea? That's pure evil.
I feel kind of reassured knowing that even Gordon Ramsay agrees that Shark's Fin tastes of nothing, and really, it's only the broth that's good. The texture isn't even that nice either.
I love how the western world never looks at itself, NEVER change the perspective on them selves. How they mass farm pigs, cows and chickens, and literally do the same things or worse. Chickens are so closely packed in the farms that they rub each others feathers and parts of skin off. This is also torture.
Makes you want to cut someones arms and legs off and throw off the fuckin roof. nearly 7,000,000,000 people, a few off the edge wont hurt, its not like their endangered shark species or anything.
@GothSeiDank where are there large number of shark farms? The reason shark fin soup is so cruel is because the ocean cant afford to lose that many sharks. Putting the equilibrium so off balance will cause us huge harm later
@freeblue917 Again, I wonder how people can justify one evil by bringing up another. With this attitude we should be able to get away with killing people. Can you not see right and wrong. There are wrongs everywhere if you look. Some of us do what we can to help fix them. There are many videos on Foie Gras, we are not promoting that here. Why do you even bring it up? The topic is Shark Fin! You want to make a video on Foie Gras? I would post a supportive comment, not one that makes no sense!
@EnjoyableApps i have no problems with anyone else bringing up STOP Sharkfin campaign, just not from a hypocrite. and everyone can and should point out a hypocrite when he see one.
@freeblue917 I am sure if you opened your life up to us we might be able to call you a hypocrite as well. What benefit does calling the host names do? It has nothing to do with saving our oceans, as a matter a fact it is counterproductive. You want to discredit him? Why? You support banning shark finning but discredit the most influential spokesperson, this is convoluted.
@freeblue917 I agree with you. No one is taking the hypocrite's message serious. In order to convince others to stop their wrong-doings, they themselves who are barking should set an example first in order to convince others. They can continue to bark all they want. They are wasting their own time, money, and energy, but the result is nothing, because of their own hypocrisy, they can't look inward to see their own flaws.
@freeblue917 Of course foie gras is a problem, but those geese aren't going extinct because of it. It's obvious which problem is more urgent. If you want to campaign against foie gras, that's fine, but that really doesn't have anything to do with this video.
why dont you use your culinary skills to make a dish out of the sharks body. although killing the endangered species would still happen, at least the whole body will not go to waste.
@Pokemonandblackberry You are justifying one horrible atrocity with another? What a world it would be if this was the norm. Thankfully it is not and you are in the minority.
@Pokemonandblackberry Also, do not make this a race thing. Would it be OK if gordon was asian? If so go see to what Yao Ming says about Shark Finning if race is that important to you.
It's not easy for me to watch a shark being killed at 5:10 (Costa Rica section). However, Ramsay is definitely a HYPOCRITE. This son of a bitch is NOT a vegetarian. He often cooks beef. Well, how does he think that those slices of beef make it to the market? You have to kill the cows and DISMEMBER them first! Just, you know what, Ramsay, unless you're a vegetarian, cut the pious crap!
@ttiiyy Is it all back and white? you can not see the difference between killing a cow raised for slaughter instantly and cutting the fins off a live endangered shark? This video has influenced thousands of people, you would rather it not be made because Ramsay does not live up to your standard? You comment reflects a very distorted opinion and does not help anything!
@EnjoyableApps If the idea of having an ethical standard in treatment of animals is defined by the amount of suffering the slaughtered animal endures, then Ramsay is definitely a hypocrite. Foie Gras is traditionally produced by forceful overfeeding of birds, and veal is produced by stuffing a newborn calf chained inside a crate or cage and inducing artificial anemia in the animal. That said there are ethical alternatives to all foods these days, including veal, foie gras and shark fin.
@FlukeAlot1 by you screen name i see you have a hi moral standard yourself, one that is surely above Ramsay. So in your world this video would not be made because Ramsay does not live up to your standards? what does that do? He is shedding light on a horrible atrocity and all you can do is ridicule him? Wake up and either contribute or get out of the way because you are slowing the evolution of the planet down.
@EnjoyableApps If a uniform ethical standard was to apply, ie "ethical food", then we ought to also look at atrocities that are also committed in all styles dining. It is hypocritical for one to state "geez shark fin (which I don't serve anyway because i don't sell asian food) is unethical, but foie gras is delicious so I'm serving it. Such a stance leads me to infer that such criticisms are motivated by xenophobia rather than ethical concern.
@FlukeAlot1 You are partaking in the archaic practice of shooting the messenger. Somehow confusing the messenger and the message. i believe this practice died out as we evolved somewhere in the 1700's. If you want to help and stop being a hindrance go find a youtube video on foie gras and add a positive comment there, or maybe you could try to make a foie gras video yourself and you will see how much work it takes, then finding an appreciation for what was done here.
@musicluver1204 He's kind of an idiot. At 4:49, he said, "let's get out of here before we get shot." Really? Yeah, those ladies that are trying to support their families are going to shoot you. Give me a break. I don't like people who eat shark fins, but I can't stand this kind of ridiculous rant. You can find animal abuse in every country.
Sharks are predators so they give birth slowly and rarely and often do grow to adulthood. Chickens and cows grow up fast and has babies quick and often
I have been watching footage on this horrible crime for awhile and must say that Gordon did a wonderful job telling the truth about this terrible practice. I care about the sharks but even if you don't, think about the repercussions of eventually eliminating the highest creature in the ocean food chain. It's about time we stopped fucking with nature and the cruelty is appalling. Thanks Gordon.
Those people who kill the sharks, obviously its cruel and barbaric, but they are just trying to make a good living in a nation filled with poverty. And demand will never go down for shark fin soup, its so delicious. And btw they took their signs down after they noticed that their business wasn't doing too well when they stop serving shark fin soup.
@High3rCalibr3 are you serious? Shark fins are completely tasteless, they are only eaten because of people holding onto very old traditions. Chinese people think they give them super powers if they eat them, that's why so many sharks are killed for this. It's completely mad.
I am a Singaporean Chinese. I never like shark fin. I only like the soup. To me, the fin is tasteless and sometimes even smell fishy. I can't stop the people around me but I will always make my stand clear every time. I will inform the waiter to give me the soup before adding the fin and will explain to everyone why I am against eating that. Now they call me a "conservationist" ha.
@boagsale They try to justify their ignorance with everything they do!..Just like they think it's ok to mutilate and kill many species of animals for their ridiculous medicines..It's ok for them to destroy so many species of animals, as long as it benefits them, they call us dumb pricks, we don't cut off tigers paws to make our men's penis's bigger, how sick is that belief?..They have no regard for any form of life..
i'm chinese, and the thing is, sharks fin soup does taste bland. it's overrated cos our parents and their parents before consider it a delicacy and a norm for special occasions for weddings etc as symbols of being financially ok.
if anybody is so much against animal slaughter, you should quit eating meat in general... we intake meat from slaughtered animals EVERYDAY - chicken, beef, pork.
all the cryin you guys are makin over JUST sharks? what bout them other shit you eat?
dont bs bout "but hey, the other animals arent goin into extinction"... a life being killed is a life being killed. im not that heartless and im not FOR shark finning. but dudes, dont cry if youre not convertin to become a vegan
@YEHLOskeets We don't tend to cut a cows leg off and throw it back into the field. We don't tend to rip a wing off a chicken and then toss it back into the coop. These examples are analogous to what is happening here. Furthermore, we farm the animals (i.e., we breed them for the purpose of eating and their existence is not crucial to the habitat). These sharks are in their natural habitat and are pivotal to the balance of the waters. THAT'S why this is wrong, and worse.

If you support eliminating Shark Finning and you can not see the benefit of what he has done here, then i don't know what to say. Have you heard the term throwing the baby out with the bathwater?
EnjoyableApps 1 week ago 2
@Higgins2001 The condition of knowledge at this point is: child rape bad, shark fin good. There is no challenging that child rape is bad. However to challenge that shark fin is good, he must try it to at least knock it, or else he isn't exactly basing it on anything. If you want to debate this with logic; everything has to be based on a pre-existing statement, whether a lemma or axiom. He ate one bowl to be able to judge such a practice fairly, nothing more.
Kawagata 1 week ago
@Higgins2001 Equating rape to ...eating is a bit of a fallacy in itself... isn't it? It's not the same.

How small is your brain? Are your mom and dad brother and sister? Do you have down syndrome or some other kind of retardation?
KillinDaWelfareMCs 1 week ago
@Higgins2001 IMO he was trying to get another perspective on it, tasting it to see what all the "fuss" was about. How exactly did he "indulge" in it? It's always good to get another perspective on something rather than arguing against it whilst having no clue about the other side of the matter.
I don't think it's suitable to compare eating a bowl of soup with raping a child.. If more people thought the way you do there'd probably be more incidences of child rape and murder.
Spacemonkeymojo 1 week ago 2
@Higgins2001 - He complained because the sharkfin tasted bland, and is very expensive.
If it had amazing taste you could justify spending a lot of money on it, but if tastes like nothing, why no use a different ingredient instead?
crazywaffleking 6 days ago
@crazywaffleking He never said it tasted bad, he said it taste nothing, just like tofu, it's really what you add to it that give it taste.
jonharson 6 days ago
@crazywaffleking First of all, he went into the restaurant knowing he is going to condemn it, he is already biased before even tasting the food. His head is wired to find flaws (just look at his face the entire time). Secondly, it is his personal taste, i personally find chicken/turkey breast bland and chewy, whereas the Americans prize chicken breast. Thirdly, through your comment, I conclude you never tasted shark fin soup so who are you to say it tastes like nothing?

I don't care where you're from, who you are, or anything like that, but eating shark fin soup is seriously wrong. These creatures are treated with no respect and it disgusts me. I wish others could open their eyes to see how absolutely barbaric this is.

AznHockeyMs 1 week ago
@AznHockeyMs unfortunately that won't change a thing; we can't just half-ass the regulations, as people will always exploit them. There is little doubt that even if there was a global committment to finning, people would STILL do it illegally because of the money. However, you have to start somewhere; humans are ignorant fucks, and will go on stubbornly doing what they please only until there is some individual consequence. To give them that small window won't solve anything...

How is eating a shark different from eating a cow or a chicken ? Had you seen slaughter houses in the US ? They are just as worst as these people.
shaochiavang 1 week ago
@shaochiavang Did you watch the video? It is not obvious? Sharks are endangered, they are used for only there fins, there is no nutritional value to eating shark fin, just some outdated belief. Do you see the difference? Yes you could say eating cows and chickens is bad but we are talking about sharks here. There are other videos on Cows and Chickens on youtube, go watch them if this is your concern. but if you are justifying one wrong with another you are not helping anything.

I thought it was just rice noodles.

EnjoyableApps 2 weeks ago 2
@EnjoyableApps i have no problems with anyone else bringing up STOP Sharkfin campaign, just not from a hypocrite. and everyone can and should point out a hypocrite when he see one.
freeblue917 2 weeks ago
@freeblue917 I am sure if you opened your life up to us we might be able to call you a hypocrite as well. What benefit does calling the host names do? You support banning shark finning but discredit the most influential spokesperson, this is convoluted.
EnjoyableApps 2 weeks ago
@freeblue917 I agree with you. No one is taking the hypocrite's message serious. In order to convince others to stop their wrong-doings, they themselves who are barking should set an example first in order to convince others. They can continue to bark all they want. They are wasting their own time, money, and energy, but the result is nothing, because of their own hypocrisy, they can't look inward to see their own flaws.

Just, you know what, Ramsay, unless you're a vegetarian, cut the pious crap!
ttiiyy 2 weeks ago
@ttiiyy Is it all back and white? you can not see the difference between killing a cow raised for slaughter instantly and cutting the fins off a live endangered shark? This video has influenced thousands of people, you would rather it not be made because Ramsay does not live up to your standard? You comment reflects a very distorted opinion and does not help anything!
EnjoyableApps 2 weeks ago
@EnjoyableApps If the idea of having an ethical standard in treatment of animals is defined by the amount of suffering the slaughtered animal endures, then Ramsay is definitely a hypocrite. Foie Gras is traditionally produced by forceful overfeeding of birds, and veal is produced by stuffing a newborn calf chained inside a crate or cage and inducing artificial anemia in the animal. That said there are ethical alternatives to all foods these days, including veal, foie gras and shark fin.
FlukeAlot1 2 weeks ago
@FlukeAlot1 by you screen name i see you have a hi moral standard yourself, one that is surely above Ramsay. So in your world this video would not be made because Ramsay does not live up to your standards? what does that do? He is shedding light on a horrible atrocity and all you can do is ridicule him? Wake up and either contribute or get out of the way because you are slowing the evolution of the planet down.
EnjoyableApps 2 weeks ago
@EnjoyableApps If a uniform ethical standard was to apply, ie "ethical food", then we ought to also look at atrocities that are also committed in all styles dining. It is hypocritical for one to state "geez shark fin (which I don't serve anyway because i don't sell asian food) is unethical, but foie gras is delicious so I'm serving it. Such a stance leads me to infer that such criticisms are motivated by xenophobia rather than ethical concern.
FlukeAlot1 2 weeks ago
@FlukeAlot1 You are partaking in the archaic practice of shooting the messenger. Somehow confusing the messenger and the message. i believe this practice died out as we evolved somewhere in the 1700's. If you want to help and stop being a hindrance go find a youtube video on foie gras and add a positive comment there, or maybe you could try to make a foie gras video yourself and you will see how much work it takes, then finding an appreciation for what was done here.
