  • Can you just do this under an inert gas like argon instead of using a vacuum?

  • If scotch tape will do this, what will duct tape do?

  • they need to try 2 inch wide packing tape

  • i will never look at sticky tape the same way again :o

  • Seth Putterman is great; one of the best profs at UCLA.

  • Just think of the possibilities - you could make an inexpensive, portable, medical X-ray device that doesn't even require electricity. A simple hand crank or wind-up mechanism would supply all the necessary power. The only thing difficult is obtaining a vacuum, but pre-vacuumed cartridges containing tape, or endless tape loops could make that a non-issue. Combine that with a polaroid-style instant X-ray film, and one could have a hand powered X-ray device in a backpack...

  • The TSA's next attempt to intrude on your personal space will include wrapping you in duct-tape, putting you in a vacuum chamber, and slowly peeling the tape off.

  • Great discovery... Instead of replacing very expensive X-Ray tubes/heads after a specified period, all the operator has to do is install a new roll of tape; and in theory, providing that there are no pollutants in the vacuum cavity, the same roll of tape could be reused over and over.

  • Nice edit dude!

  • Hey can someone put it on something else, other than a finger?! Or is that the only way, on your finger.

  • use DUCT TAPE!!!

  • they say they tried it already -> no x-rays.

  • you do however get the triboluminescence effect from tearing duct tape off an aluminum surface

  • i was reading about this somewhere else, unfortunately, a lot of science-ignorant people find this useless and not important to science discovery. i seriously think the opposite. science never fails to amaze me. wow!! whats next? you never know whats next!!

  • All kidding aside, this has to be the most amazing, and unbelievable discovery ever! X-rays from sticky tape in a vacuum ... who knew?

  • Note to self: don't wrap presents in the vacuum of space.

  • hahahaah

    true!

  • @squimball I lol'd

  • I was reading how x-ray tubes work and how old 1800 century light bulbs (high vacuum and no gas) produced x-rays/images. I understand basics of what's happening, but like they're saying, to produce x-rays at such low input is amazing.
