  • Cool video and cool song.

  • Coordinate power to maintain altitude and track the yaw to force the nose to always point away from you. DO NOT lose control of yaw. Any orientation that points the nose to the side or toward you must not be attempted until you are an ace pilot at flying from behind the tail.

    Be aware that as the cockpit is heated by the blazing hot motors the yaw rate will drift slightly, so the heading lock must be occasionally retrimmed to track the drift as you fly.

  • Repeat the trim process to pitch and roll axes so that the heli will rise out of your hand and hover in one place. If it does not, grab the bottom, point the nose directly away from you, level the fuselage, and keep trying. Eventually, about three tweaks per axis will result in a clean stable hover right out of your hand. When you start to lose it, grab it again and start over. This process lets you do the hardest steps outside of ground effect.

  • Practice trimming the yaw channel while holding the heli in your hand and raising power to hover level. You can let it gently rise out of your hand, tweak the trim, and grab it again. Repeat. When the trim is close enough that it will hover without turning left or right, the on board gyro will very agressively hold a heading until you give it a stick input. Now practice liftoff from your hand or the floor while using small yaw inputs to keep the nose pointed directly away from you.

  • Two big challenges are trimming the servos and avoiding ground effect. Take off the training gear and even the skids if you wish. They are not needed if you land gently. Put on safety glasses if you don't feel confident holding the heli up at eye level at hover power.

  • Thanks for the compliments! This is very easy with the Blade CX. I developed a slightly dangerous (but fun) way to cheat at the training process. I don't think most pilots are willing to hold a heli the way I do, just out of common sense safety practices.

    Bah! Live a little! Taking a little risk can be so much fun. Those blades are sharp, but so are we. If you can't complete this process using my trick, you will need to work on coordination before you fly any heli!
