s this about this 'Claudio' or made by him? He is introduced as a kind of 'genius' above the band in some parts of the text.. WTF... who was him? Nobody knows in Brazil.
Let's make things clear. Os Mutantes were a incredibly creative rock band that fited into tropicalist's esthetical needs. They were lucky to be received by the tropicalists. Otherwise, they could have been just a brazilian Beatles cover band. I exagerate, of course. But their triumph is strongly connected to tropicalism, movement in wich their contribution consisted more in their musical abilities and courage for experimentation than really in proposing new esthetical paths to brazilian music.
@rafalimpim Mutantes had problems with the dictatorship. Some of their musics were censured. "Dom Quixote", "Ave, Lucifer" and "A Hora e a Vez do Cabelo Nascer" are examples. And if Gil and Caetano had problems with dictatorship because of their ideas, so tropicalism had problems too. Not as a movement, but as a whole, because it's inventors were chased.
Yes, Mutantes didn't say in their song things like "fuck off militarys!", but they didn't went "crazy" with their clothes ONLY for fun: they meant to go "against" what was going on. The dictatorship era wasn't a fun time, so being all colourful and dressing weird was actually going against it. And being "Panis et Circenses" one of the hyms of Tropicalia (written and performed by Tropicalists), i guess you can say they had a political thing going on.
I agree that the video it's exagerate saying that "the soldiers were coming for them next"... Mutantes weren't their first concern when it comes about artists fighting the dictatorship, that's for sure. But you can't say they lack COMPLETLY on political effort.
Awful video! The guys who've made it don't know shit about brazilian history. Tropicalists were not engaged politicaly! One of the reasons that explains why people disliked them is because they weren't political as many others were. Os Mutantes didn't really have problems with the dictatorship (by the way, suported by CIA). Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil had. Mutantes didn't have ideas, it was all about music!

Great video, but we cannot forget that the military government here in Brazil was instaled and financed exactly by the USA (why Mutantes would send his music to there?).

In the end, when children are playing in the garden, the best song to accompany the image it would be "Jardim Elétrico" (Eletric Garden).
