@oldjizzy Berton Averre, who had been working on the riff a couple of years before he joined the Knack, Very underrated guitar player, but he sure rocked the hell out of this song...
@bigjack0607 The radio was just as horrible back then. It's just that you don't have to endure "Gloria", "Heaven on the 7th Floor" or "Convoy" because that garbage didn't endure. :)
This performance is GENIUS! One Fender, one Les paul, some drums and a bass. And the way Doug moves and the way he drops the expressions on his face. God DAMN!
One of the best rock song ever... great guitar solo. I have recently knewn about Doug's death. Ancient Romans use to say "Muor giovane chi è caro agli dei" as for "God's favourite death young"...
I was 8 but my older Brother had the album and I heard it resonating from his room many times. I was fortunate enough to see them in Atlantic City before Doug passed away. They were absolutely outstanding!!! God Bless Doug and his family. Thanks Face for posting! Did you happen to see them early on?
I had 4th row floor seats for this band at the Inglewood Forum in LA in the same year to see and experience their performance and energy. Great band with a great date to see them. Bill d. P.
Sure The Knack came and went in a flash, but this band could really play. Certainly there's an influence of the Beatles, but this band was something special on their own, and had their own distinct energy, style, and sound. Most bands today couldn't play a guitare riff like that if their lives depended on it.
Trust me, down here in d.c., we had all this straight-edge hardcore going on, and while I was friends with some prime movers in there, no one was going to tell me how to act and what to listen to or how to dress. Sure, we followed some fashion, but, really, it was a black leather jacket, jeans, that's it. We had a lot of rockkabilly back then around here. Loved that too. I remember seeing rickie lee jones. loved that too! WE CAN HAVE IT ALL!!!!!!!!
One of the tightest live performances I have ever seen. When one can say that 'live' sounds better than the album, and with that guitar solo....... the Knack fucken rocked!
i am a huge fan of all music and can honestly say i have nevr hearr such an amzing songg. For me this is the best songe ever writttene /played and was also in my wedding x
When you compare how good these are live,to Arctic Monkey,Killers,Doves,Strokes etc, they don't compare, these are so good there is no difference live or record, the sign of top musicians and singers. You buy a record because you think its great and then expect them to playand sing equally good live, like these and Muse.Doesn't he have a Keith Moon mischief in his eyes!
I was fortunate to know The Knack thirty one years ago when "Get the Knack" hit the streets and these guys were the real deal, great song writers and musicians...They were relentless in the amount of performances they played from small clubs to vast arenas, my favorite show was at the Marquee Club in London May 1979, when Doug and the boys hit the stage they were greeted by beer tossing punks and they blasted into the Kinks song "Hard Way" they smoked the stage that night, Doug Fieger is an icon
I've been a Knack fan since their first album. I remember listening to My Sharona on the radio as I left for college in '79...sure hate to hear that Doug has passed away. I've got a feeling his music will be rocking generations yet to come...Long live the Knack!
The Knack's Doug Feiger, 57 (1952-2010) will always be remembered for co-writing 1979's #1 smash "My Sharona". Too bad that his band had a short career commercially because what a great debut album, GET THE KNACK, was. I've read that he battled cancer since 2006 when he had 2 brain tumours removed. He fought to the bitter end. Thank you, Doug, for creating a memorable rock song which will always be your legacy.
I love how his eyes widen on the "WOOO!"s haha. I think this was just before they made it big. You can feel their determination and passion.. a great example of how a band should play, every night!
One of the post-disco hits. Had the album. Helped me in my move from San Diego County to Orange County in 1979. Just listened to this last week on the radio and of course turned it up and sang my heart out !!!!!
That guitar solo is one of the best (yet under-rated) in rock/pop, right up there with the one in "Rock Around the Clock" (Bill Hailey & the Comets) and "Maybe I'm Amazed" (Wings).
Yeah ! I've been saying for years 'Sharona' has one of the best guitar solos EVER, and people would go, 'Psshh, yeah RIGHT !' fucking just listen to it ! Anyway, R.I.P. Doug.
@viscig60-- You took the words out of my mouth! One of the all-time great melodic leads & the camera couldn't be bothered. I was bitching at the guy out loud with "the guitar, you idiot, the guitar:" lol
The Knack were such a great band. Great musicianship, songwriting & performing. Bruce Gary was one one of the baddest ass drummers in rock & Doug wrote such melodic, well structured songs. They have their own secure spot in rock`n roll history IMO.
Got me through a 7 week hospital stay. Me and three of my best buddies/fellow patients playing pin ball in the adolescent wing rec room '79-'80. This played with the bass way up constantly. Good time in a bad situation.
I'm still astounded about the fact that this LP was done cheap, quick, and sold millions! When The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and their ilk were getting million dollar budgets for their albums this one was done in 2 weeks for $18, 000 and went gold in 13 days! Just as astounding is the fact that the longest running #1 tune in history with a girl's name in its' title has a line like "I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind'...and it got by the censors!
What a shock! I wasn't even aware Doug had cancer.....I toured with them in summer of 1979 - Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Orleans........30+ years ago! Doug was impossibly energetic and Sharona (who went with us) was a sweetheart! RIP Doug.....you WILL be remembered!
I haven't stopped crying since I woke up today & read the news. The Knack wasn't an "all time fave" of mine but they were SO important in 1979. Like others have said, the underrated "Good Girls Don't" was it for me but this one was SO important for the time & such a great album. There was good music (Clash, Ramones) in the underground - & Cheap Trick barely above - but everything on radio & TV was such crap & had been for a couple of years. Then came The Knack, a breath of fresh air. RIP Doug.
I am very sad today - I always preferred "Good girls don't" that was the song that inspired me to learn the guitar and start writing songs about girls.
RIP Doug - the world of music was a better place because you lived in it for a while :-(
RIP Doug Fieger. My Sharona is the first Rock riff I ever learned on guitar, and inspired me to first play music with people. And every time I hear it, it's the Summer of '79 all over again (six weeks at #1). Ageless powerpop classic!
This song was huge the year I graduated from HS. It was literally THE song at the time. It brings back so many memories! I'm so sad to hear that the lead singer died so young...RIP Doug.
back in '79, they called the Clash "the only band that matters." the beauty of the Knack was -- they didn't matter. They were a supremely tight power pop band, with the best hooks and B-52s jerky beats singing about guys jacking off to younger girls. contrary to what a lot of punks might have told you, there was room in the world for both. Gangs like mine, that 'got it' had more fun. No regimentation, no borderlines. Music was just exploding everywhere. Why choose sides? RIP
@backstretch I appreciate the intelligent response. I grew up in a hick little town in N.H. and my gang of friends also " got it." You are so right my man - why choose sides ?
@CosmikDebrisFZ. I live on Capecod now in lovely Taxachusetts. But lived on Franklin & LeBreque Streets in Lincoln for around 35 years. Graduated in '77 at good ol' , what was then called , Lin-Wood HS. I could drop names. I'm sure you now a buncha my old pals , but I'll refrain for privacy's sake. Peace out ...
@facedahmusik Oh ya, I use to hang out down your end when I was a teen. Had a few friends down that way. Hanging out at Woody's Torch Woodshop. Good ol Pigs ear or south end as it was known. I lived on the east end of Pollard road towards Loon Mountain. I'm sure you you know my brother, he graduated in 79.
Incredible band! Way more then just a one hit wonder. The Knack were at their best during this gig, and it's a shame this concert was only released on LaserDisc. Still waiting for a re-realese on DVD.
Right on, Salguine- for me, my all-time fave groups have got to be The Beatles, The Clash, The Jam, Blondie, Elvis Costello and the Attractions for example.
Each had great drummers (yes, Ringo too!). Not forgetting the great Bruce Gary!
Actually the date of this Carnegie Hall show was October 10th, 1979, I saw them one week earlier at Detroit's Masonic Temple on October 3rd, which to this day is a show that I will never forget.
Agreed! This is the last time you ever heard an extended guitar solo in a major pop song. I remember back then, it was the solo that every guitarist had to learn. Just like how Terry Kath's solo on 25 or 6 to 4 was in 1970. My Sharona seemed to cap of the decade in style.
That's too funny! I had to go back to catch it. He took it like there wasn't anything out of the ordinary! Just the every day towel-slap in the face at the Knack show.
bruce gary was a BADDASS. if the knack suffered from a kind of LA pro corny-ness, they also prevailed by having one of the most killer drummers this side of topper headon. he made the knack into the clash of power pop. dig that snare sound.
Incredible! The singer is Lionel Messi.

@facedahmusik Man,lol me too. I now reside 3 miles south in Woodstock, sure you know where that is. It's a small world after all. That's amazing.

RIP Doug Fieger!!!

Actually the date of this Carnegie Hall show was October 10th, 1979, I saw them one week earlier at Detroit's Masonic Temple on October 3rd, which to this day is a show that I will never forget.

Totally! Burton is a shred machine!

Agreed! This is the last time you ever heard an extended guitar solo in a major pop song. I remember back then, it was the solo that every guitarist had to learn. Just like how Terry Kath's solo on 25 or 6 to 4 was in 1970. My Sharona seemed to cap of the decade in style.

does anyone wonder why the hippie gets slapped in the face with a towel at :46?
iselliot 2 years ago
That's too funny! I had to go back to catch it. He took it like there wasn't anything out of the ordinary! Just the every day towel-slap in the face at the Knack show.

bruce gary was a BADDASS. if the knack suffered from a kind of LA pro corny-ness, they also prevailed by having one of the most killer drummers this side of topper headon. he made the knack into the clash of power pop. dig that snare sound.

A huge fan of Topper's drumming myself- great name-check. Also great is Pretenders drummer, Martin Chambers.
