Still living with the same old perception of the American auto industry? It's a shame that there are too many of you who live with these past perceptions of quality. The Japanese aren't perfect and neither are their vehicles. Take some time and do some research on current GM and Ford vehicles. Eg: The new Fusion Hybrid. I know this is cliche, but we really do need to start supporting our own industries.
This is the funniest thing I have ever seen. For now, I'll just stick with Jetta TDI Clean Diesel. I can help the enviro(and my wallet) and actually move. My car fucking flies.
Why wont anyone forgive GM and open their eyes. All these stupid little jap. cars are not any better than the new american cars sure in the past they didnt get good gas mileage or werent built well but thats behind us and plz people open your eyes to GM and all their new FUEL EFFICIENT VEHICLES hmm 37mpg maybe?
omg people, so shit happened and they made a bad choice. Act like you haven't! im sure there are lots of people out there that could talk about some really bad things you've done to them. Stop crying about the past and look at today-the future. We're building cars like this for the future not the past right? Learn to shut your your mouth, read from more then one perspective, and only speak when you know all sides of the matter. Most important, think about the future and be proactive now!
p.s.None of my reasoning has anything to do with the environment. I dont live in an area prone to pollution like L.A. Us causing global warming is a lie, but being a good steward of the planet, and making changes to improve our quality of life makes sense, if you DO live in an area like L.A.
My reasons are purely for the Marine grunt with his dick in the dirt fighting in the middle east.We need to be capable of telling those fuckers to eat shit and die. Can't do it when we need their oil.
WELL, it's a fact their is no video of this car actually driving. Every video is about golf cart speed, so I'm not that excited about it. Plus 40 K for a little car is a joke also.
I converted my truck to natural gas, it's a 10mpg monster, I only drive it about 3500 miles per year. I'm working on a conversion for my Impala also, it has a big enough trunk for a tank. I still can gas up, but the natural gas for local helps a lot.
It's going slow because under the hood, which GM refused to show, is a golf-cart motor and three cheap batteries! But GM will make a prototype; after all, it's just a 40-mile-range EV, there are loads of them.
GM should just die now if they are relying on that POS.
Honda FCX Clarity Hydrogen Fuel Cell is the future of automobiles. Instead of joke videos of dumb fuck CEOs who havent a clue, the Hondas are on the roads of California as we speak. Plus they arent ugly.
Unlike a prius the Chevy Volt ONLY runs on battery power in the first 40 miles and will go 100mph the prius uses gas after 20mph so the Chevy is better and after 40miles driven the car still is electric but uses a gas motor to charge battery, again better than Prius, plus the Chevy just looks better.
"moving at the speed of light" indeed. I can just imagine the car-chase scenes in movies of the future: the villain is escaping in a chevy volt and the cops chase him down on foot.... rofl
GM claimed it spent $1 Billion sabotaging the EV1; considering how stupid GM looks now, having arrested its own customers and begging for bailouts, who is stupid enough to believe GM???
I maybe would, if GM would rescind the conviction of Alexandra and Colette, who were fined and had to serve community service; plus if GM apologized for taking the cars and crushing them.
GM did violate the FCRA by damaging our credit for "scratches" on the EV1 that it confiscated and crushed, I didn't sue for the $5,000 statutory penalty. But GM could at least apologize and compensate customers that it had arrested. And apologize for crushing its own product and not taking our money.
The Volt concept car was cool, but the Volt production car is hideous and bland. Nobody is going to pay $40K to $48K for a vehicle that automobile critics have dubbed "Grandma's electric vehicle". You can get TWO Toyota Prius cars for the price of the one Volt.
See how fast that thing was going? At the end of the video, it had a top speed of 15 mph. The Chevy EV! was a screw up, and so is this piece of junk. Typical. Paying millions to these incompetent engineers. GM Ford and Chrysler....You deserve what you get. You've been screwing the public for years now with your inferior products, and greed. Make it cheap, and sell it high!! Now it's your turn. You did this to yourself. I wouldn't give you a dime of the bailout. Bastards!!
WRONG! This is not the first mass produced electric car! Anyone remember the ev1? It was produced up around 1999 by GM. Google "Who Killed the Electric Car" to find out more.
I've got a bad feeling that that was all the power it could muster. Not that I'm surprised. Maybe they should work harder at begging Toyota for technology.
this is rediculous! AMP are making BRAND NEW Saturn Skys converted into electric for 25,000! That seems like a reasonable price and guess what? it has a 90 MPH top speed and 150 mile range. It can also go 0-60 in under 6 seconds! Shame on GM for making this POS. Electric cars are here. GM is doing this on purpose. They are making crappy electric cars. How can AMP make their cars so good but gm can't? Because they WON'T! GM killed the EV1 and they are trying to kill Volt. google AMP saturn sky.
Sorry, the "new" saturn skys only have a range of 150 miles, the Volt has a rang of 500+ miles on 12 gallons. And the electric Saturn Skys will cost $50k not $25k. There are a few companies out there to buy converted electric cars from, but they all have the same problem of range limit, and battery pack life span.
ok i was wrong about the price tag. look like the conversion cost is 25k. So the volt is still 41 mpg. Hardly worth 35k-40k they are targeting for the volt. Used priuses have been converted to 120 mpg. That's almost triple the efficiency of your precious volt at about the same price.
My Mondeo gets 30mpg if I drive carefully (mostly local commutes is why), so even if the Volt battery is dying 40mpg is an improvement. But Im tending towards going for a Th!nk City or Smart EV since Im only 5 miles from work - if I need a motorway car I can borrow or even hire a car for the day.
There's no advantage in charging the batteries off the ICE while driving, the whole idea is that getting power from the wall socket is 1/10th the cost per mile of buying fuel and burning it in the ICE. If you fully charge the batts off the ICE there's no gain.
There's also a huge MPG improvement because it's a Series Hybrid so they've ditched the mechanical transmission that in normal cars waists up to 30% of the power produced by the engine before it reaches the rear wheels.
volkswagon have been making diesels that does 40-78 mpg for years. Why can't GM do this? because they won't. Keep with the high praise about the volt. GM has alot of work to do.
What the Volt's gas engine can't do is completely recharge the battery pack to its full capacity. Rather, when load conditions are light the gas engine will send surplus electrons to the battery pack, which will also be receiving extra charge from regenerative braking, as well.
everobody in this chat is stupid!!!!!if the motor was to charge the battery then its a HYBRID!!!! the gas motor is for backup since it runs for only 80 miles per charge :P jdsony i agree .......and yes its about time america was back in the game :D:D:D next you'll find iran khodro cars in the us :P
No. 1 90% of the posts here are lame. If this were a VW or a Toyota I'm betting yall would be sucking its butt for pocket change.
No. 2 It IS an electric car. the gasoline engine is ONLY a generator for the battery. It is technically a SERIES hybrid, so like I said, the gas motor couldn't turn the wheels if it wanted to.
As for "trying to kill the electric car" that is total BS. Do you know how many programs they axed for the Volt? They're desperately hoping it'll succeed. I do too.
Seconded and they only axed the EV1 cause it didn't make sense to try and go for it at that time the Volt is something that's a good stepping stone for the future of alternative energies and ironing out the basics of electric cars
Those who saw the EV1 wanted to drive it, and those who drove it wanted to buy it but could only lease it, and those who leased it leased the EV1 and would have kept leasing it rather than use a petrol car. EV1 drivers realised they didnt need petrol cars beyond a long distance trip, and that scared the bejeezus out of GM et al with their need for cars and their parts to be maintained/repaired/replaced regularly, and for cars to only use the fuel of their generous friends in the oil industry.
Rumour has it that GM will do the most stupid lease thing again and lease the battery packs to Volt owners... They can then milk them for the lease as well as sell them the car!
That would only make sense if it was 100% electric, like the Th!nk City, but the 40 mile battery shouldnt need a lease. Next they'll be leasing the lead acid battery for the 12Volt system in all their petrol cars too lol.
GMs Volt will get my vote too (and any other 'proper' car with a plug-in electric range), though its only a stepping stone to pure electric cos once cars are sold with even 40 miles of plug-in electric range all the world's car companies will compete to offer even better plug-in electric ranges and ever faster recharge times until eventually a 10 minute recharge, 200+ mile range and 95mph speed will make on-board petrol generators redundant, especially if sold with solar/wind options for the home
I really rooting for GM and this car, I really hope they hit this one out of the park! It's time we get a electric vehicle....this is your chance GM, show us you can make it happen!
In a long time i'm trully a fan of GM with this project, time to change the automobile industry forever!!
why is every clip of the car actually moving seem like it's just rolling in neutral. so slow! hey GM...if you want to impress us with this new Volt at the very least show it moving at some respectable speed (greater than 50mph). 40 miles and no gas...that's great but not if it takes me 5 hours to travel that distance.
Agreed. This is stupid. Apparently they don't have the real engine in it yet but if that's the case they are insane. If they can't put the REAL engine in the car yet they obviously have a lot of work left to do. They are trying to get potential buyers to hold off buying a Toyota or Honda for as long as possible while they finally get this thing actually into production which could still be 3 years away.
Well jeez it's only taken, what, 100 years for these cars to finally show up on the road again. PFfffffft... I like it. But man, the 1800's called, they want their technology back. LOL.
There isnt a car company in the world that tries to sell its car by showing it crawling around a track - they invariably show it whooshing around like a missile tracking a fast-moving target.
If they dont post a clip showing the Volt doing exciting speeds you know theyre trying to kill the electric car again whilst claiming 'look we're trying to sell them but nobody wants them'.
Even electric milk floats could outpace the speed of the car in this vid, GM must show us motorway speeds of 75mph+!
They are probably not using the electric engine that will be driving the vehicle. They probably also wanted it to have a more dramatic effect, although... it does look very sluggish.
espny: The Tesla may not have a gas engine on board, but it does need either coal, natural gas, hydro, nuclear, or some other form of electric generation to charge the batteries. The Volt happens to have an on board charger that is gas powered. Furthermore, if you drive less than 40 miles between charges you will never use the gas engine - it would be like the Tesla in that case.
If this is the "world's first to be mass produced electric car" Why does it have a gas tank and a Internal combustion engine? This is not an electric car...it is a hybrid!!!!
However, you do not necessarily need gasoline to drive the Volt.
The gasoline engine is not hooked up to the drivetrain in any way besides the fact that it recharges the battery that is connected to the electric engine.
Technically, if you only drive between 10-20 miles a day, you will not use any gasoline.
This is the best vehicle to prepare for Peak Oil.....

What a beautiful vehicle. I never imagined me saying this, but GM has piqued my interests for the first time ever.

Wow, that video showed me little to nothing about the Volt except that its wheels do, in fact, spin ... imagine that.

I hope it works with my gas powered electric generator so I can charge it with gas :D

Why do they drive it around so slowly? Looks kind of awkward.

They are probably not using the electric engine that will be driving the vehicle. They probably also wanted it to have a more dramatic effect, although... it does look very sluggish.

they better show it running at some highway speed, which it can do, in the future....they better, for marketing reasons at least....

espny: The Tesla may not have a gas engine on board, but it does need either coal, natural gas, hydro, nuclear, or some other form of electric generation to charge the batteries. The Volt happens to have an on board charger that is gas powered. Furthermore, if you drive less than 40 miles between charges you will never use the gas engine - it would be like the Tesla in that case.

Thanks Lyle. Nice to finally see it on the road!

If this is the "world's first to be mass produced electric car" Why does it have a gas tank and a Internal combustion engine? This is not an electric car...it is a hybrid!!!!

Exactly! Bud it is a NICE car though :)

So is the Prius.

well its electrically driven rather than being driven by a gas engine.
viper002060 3 years ago
the "gas engine" needs gasoline to run. Electric cars do not need gasoline. Tesla Roadster is an electric car.
