I love lt. col. ironhorse, but i always laugh when he kicks the 55gal. drum thats on the ground in the opening sence lol. there was no point in doing that except for the 'cool' effect in the 80's. haha man i loved this show and think i'm a lot smarter for watching this when i was 7 rather than the bullshit on t.v. today :->
Wow, what a horrible series this was. I remember being excited about the premier, only to be disappointed. It was supposed to be a continuation of the incredible 1953 movie, but somehow everyone had forgotten about the whole war? Uh, what?! And then the production was too cheap to show war machines much or even aliens. It was cheaper to say that the aliens took over our bodies. Bad acting, terrible effects and ridiculous plots. And season two was worse.
I remember the show fondly, and bought season one when it came out on DVD, just prior to that horrible Cruise-Spielberg movie. Season two was terrible; it was like someone's bad pizza dream.
@danielqmul What about Dukes of Hazard, A team or Buck Rogers? They ran same plot every week. Dukes discovers some crooks get chased by cops, crooks double cross boss Hog, car chasing Dukes flips over,Dukes stop the crook. Buck Rogers travels to some planet befriends someone while he is there he gets captured person he befriended helps him excape.Ateam get locked in a warehouse full of tools and build an armoured van an excape, bad guys can't shot, Jeep chasing them flips over.
Season one was fantastic and i was a big fan, sadly season 2 killed my passion for the series when the producers decided to kill off 2 of the main stars of the show. Got the impression that by season 2 the producers could not be bothered making decent episodes.
@fucknametheives I have this on DVD, I've owned it for some time now-- still waiting for season two where they kill off Ironhorse and get a new person...
It's popular to venerate all old sci-fi, and I remember seeing several eps of this when they first aired, but honestly they stank. Martians were in bulky suits so we didn't have to "pay" to have them seen on-camera, the acting varied between histrionic and wooden, the ship models were so obviously models, and the basic plot did violence to Earth intelligence by suggesting that we hadn't reverse-engineered ANY alien tech or learned much of ANYTHING about them in 35 yrs. FAIL, do it right!!
What happened to the giant alien hand covering Earth before each episode started? Was that only US versions? It had that creepy "moaning" music to it ...Like whenever they killed one in a human body and it melted into bubbly goo.
@vigotheunholy it was used in Europe (at least here in Sweden) as well. But for some reason it isn't on the DVD's - but instead used it on the cover for the 2005 movie ...
@vigotheunholy it used to be broadcacst that way on ITV/Channel 3 in the UK too, however, since the horror channel on sky has started rerunning season 1 and 2, it seems they're using the same source as the us/canadian dvds :( shame really. Another difference ive noticed with the horror channel is during the opening credits of season two, the narration is censored for some reason; "My god, theres a woman dying in front of me and no-one is helping her" now ommits the "no-one is helping her" bit
this first season was really good, but what happened to the second season , i mean even the actors looked shock about the way the show had gone. it was raw gang ware fare was the second season!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember the episode, it was the one where there is an old flying machine from the 1938 or 1898 invasion found in a swamp?
I can't remember the name of that episode either, but I'd guess it was one of the episodes between 4 and 8 of the first season. I was fairly early on in the season.
I believe the episode you are referring to is called "Eye for an Eye", which details the Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds as an actual invasion in 1938. Correct me if I'm wrong on that though.
@MutatedIguana the episode title is "Dust to Dust" (s1 episode 14) and the warship is a much older model (centuries old) buried on an Indian reservation. It is neither from the 1938 recon mission or the 1953 invasion. Its primary weapon is built into the front array and it is a walking tripod (although it should be noted that the later warships are also tripods - they dont fly, but are levitated by three electro magnetic 'invisible legs' projecting the machine from the ground :) hope this helps
Hey just look how people talk about 9/11 now...it's like people start to not forget it but it fades into memory. people dont talk about it as much anymore as time goes by...i think thats what they mean by "no one remembers the 53 invasion."
I hated these aliens. Scare the shit outta me, snatching soldiers and hiding inside them was sick! And when the humans rallied and fought back they always slip away. Couldn't keep an eye out. I loved it.

This show was stupid - the Colonel Ironhorse character in particular. If I recall, he didn't believe that there was any kind of attack. According to the story, Earth was decimated by aliens in the 50's, but this guy didn't believe in aliens. This would be like someone in Hiroshima not believing in atomic bombs, or someone in Dallas not believing in football. What's up with that?
yeah, the whole "the aliens invaded in 1953, but no-one remembers it now!" plot device was incredibly stupid, they tried to change that in season 2 I think (the world seemed to still be recovering from the damages of the invasion there), but sadly that season ended up much worse than the first.
I personally felt the second season was far superior. The aliens actually became interesting, complex characters and the show was generally much darker.
LOL, I live in Abilene and i dont believe in football, after all there is NOT a NFL team in Dallas (maybe IRVING, and next year ARLINGTON, behind the Temple but NOT Dallas) - althjough I still blame Laura Miller for that
Hey, If American's are stupid enough to forget the horrors of Communist Russia and vote a socialist for president, then they're stupid enough to forget about a Martian invasion in 1953.
'they never died all along'?!?! OH COME ON! And even if this was some continuity from the movie, i think 30 or so years after the invasion we would had a grasp of their technology. Its nothing more then a cash in is this.
Season 2 was terrible, but season 1 had a bunch of good episodes.
They played the "alien stealing your body" angle to horrifying effect. They explained that the government knew the aliens weren't dead, and had socked them away in nuclear waste. But an accident freed some, who then started an insurgency to release the rest.
True, they didn't do a smart job of explaining why we never figured out the tech -- the US govt simply had their ships in storage?!
I honestly believe that, if the writers had stretched their imaginations just a little bit more, that this could have easily been one hell of an action-packed series!
I've always thought that it would have been REALLY cool if the aliens could have re-located all of their ships/war machines from the 1953 invasion at the same time the other race of aliens who were introduced in "The Angel of Death" episode appeared at the same time for an ultimate battle over the planet Earth!
Yea, I always assumed the shows budget was pretty small, which is why we never really much of the aliens war machines, which happened to be one of my favorite things about this series.
I'm not laughing at you, I swear. But when I read the first post I inserted the word saw. Then I read the second post, looked at the first and well, then I noticed it didn't have the word in it. Couldn't help but laugh at myself. Talk about learned behavior :-D
This show was really great and was the quintessensal sci-fi series. It was getting better and better with almost a cliff hanger closing. I do not count the second season as part of the arc.
The first season has been released on DVD within the last year or so (region 1 only, I beleive). They left out the part at the begining of each episode where the alien hand comes up over Earth though, which was one of my favorite parts back then.

I think that might have been given to TV-stations independently of the show to be shown at the ad breaks and such.
I think swedish TV4 put it at the very end of the show, but I am not sure, it was many years since the show was last broadcast here.
