  • West and Satch playing Dean's.....beautiful!!!! Saw this show at the Warfield in SF with my guitar playing family!!! So awesome that my father, brother, and myself can all connect on Satriani....unlike most things in life!!! Happy 2012 guitar lovers and best wishes to Leslie West for a strong recovery and comeback tour!!

  • id live in my car for 30 years to get to share the stage with those guys for 1 night

  • Leslie's work as an actor in "The Money Pit" was also excellent.

  • Satriani the boy and Leslie shows how a real blues man plays.

  • man...leave them fookin switches alone

  • I was at this show for my 19th birthday, and it was absolutely fucking amazing. It was also hilarious how all the old people who'd brought their grandkids to see the Legends were reacting to his mastery of the word "fuck," haha.

  • mountain climbing..one of the classic albums from the 70,s...get well soon les.

  • people don't know of forget, I guess, that Leslie West was a monster player back in the day. And he was commercially successful. Many later players cite him as an influence. He might not get much respect from joe schmo on the street but true players recognize his abilities without a doubt.

  • Man thanks for the upload. I swear I've never heard of Leslie West until now. How is it that he is not mentioned on the same breath as SRV. This guy has a killer tone.

  • @MrTokken88 Hey there MrTokken, check out my channel for some great rare tunes from Leslie West. Definitely be sure to check out the one I labeled "Satriani & West LAST SHOW" to hear the finale version of this song on the last night of the tour. I was there I swear we thought the lights and sound was going to go out... Leslie simply used ALL the electricity in the city that night!!! ;)

  • get well soon Leslie!

  • legends!

  • I used to play "Mountain" greatest hits till I killed my cassette, luckily they invented cd's ! It proves all the scales and speed in the world are not as good as tone , control and soul !

  • JS' lick is absolutely similar with SRV

  • Whatever possessed Satriani to shave his head?

  • Lets all pray for the great Leslie West. Leslie underwent emergency surgery after being admitted to a hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Saturday when his leg started to swell and his foot went septic. The doctors tried for two days to save it to no avail. The decision to amputate was one that was necessary to save his life. Leslie is expected to recover but faces extensive rehabilitation. We are all prayin' for ya Leslie!

  • @depper Praying here Depper- GREAT player, huge inspiration!!!

  • Leslie could be onstage with Genghis Khan, and Leslie would still be boss.

  • @depper Ha, ha, great comment.

I read a biography of Genghis Khan... supposedly there was something about his personality that made men willing to follow him blindly.

  • @psychkoala Yep and Leslie's guitar tone is SO UNIQUE that closing your eyes, you'll have no trouble pointing to the guitar tone of the King of Tone himself, one Mr. Leslie West.

  • Satriani knows how and when to open up a jam.

  • I love at how on 7:39 Leslie's face creams over. He KNEW that he and Joe just met in Rock n Roll Heaven on that single note. That's a game changer note. The note you remember long after you forgot the words to the song. True harmony. And we need so much more of it in today's version of Rock n Roll.

  • Is that Stu Hamm on bass?

  • @joedell71 It is. Joe, Stu and Leslie really hit it off. Behind the stage. And it shows clearly here. These are all legends in their zone. What's near miraculous, is they are all in the SAME ZONE. One of the all time great guitar jams. So is the one entitled "LAST SHOW" in my channel.

  • o mio dio! ma che chitarra sta suonando?

  • a mate dragged me of to see this band mountain.ya i heard of em before not really that bothered.so i get there and im thinking Jesus i got to put up with this for a few hours to keep my mate happy.this old guy limps on stage takes a high stool to support him through the show,im thinking dear god this is a nightmare .he hits one cord and nearly takes my feking head of.they rip through a set with the enthusiasm of kids but with the sound of a stadium rock band .what a show what a band.humbled

  • Leslie West and Mountain were as amazing as I remember from their original days, but the interaction with Joe Satriani were priceless. Witnessed their concert together in Durham NC. Best night ever.

  • uau...this is something you don't see every day... joe's not playing one of his JS models :)

  • Stormy Monday never sounded better. Respect to all.

  • MAESTROOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!! YEAHHH

  • are those dean guitars?

  • around 4:11 is when the shit hits the fan in a good way...THAT is pure honking tone.

  • @quikvmax haha yep! I'd even say the shit hits the fan at approximately 3:26 :)

  • I love it that these two masters are PROXIMAL. They feed off each others' emotions and tone... we are all the better for it. The Blues teach you how to LIVE, people!

  • Something that is too rarely mentioned above and beyond LW's amazing tone and feel, is that voice of his! Stick that voice in anyone else and we're talking about one of the greatest hard rock voices ever. Somehow his own guitar prowess/tone overshadows that killer voice. In one man? I mean the man could sing metal if he wanted to. Incredible talent.

  • Lastly Lazur, we all know you have NO IDEA who Leslie West is, or what he is known for. So go sell your 10 lbs of shit in your 5 lbs bag elseware.

  • dep: Who are "we all"? I had "Leslie West, Mountain", 8-track, & listened to it every day on my drive to school '69 -'70. I was in a band that played "Mississippi Queen" 2 days after it was released. I've been to live shows by Mountain, Leslie West, West Bruce & Lang. I love LW's playing. I even like this guitar. The only problem I have is with you calling it "in a class by itself" , & "a cut above": 2 statements you refuse to explain or support: What "class"? "A cut above" what?

  • Quicksilver!? Dude get a life. A good guitar is a tree with a microphone. A great guitar is a tree with a microphone that is being played by a legend. I will take Leslie West and a Les Paul Jr or his Dean ANYDAY over any guitar you mention. Joe has a deal with Ibanez, he cant play any other guitar. This was a rare exception. This Dean is closely modeled after the Jr, and if Leslie says its the best tone and his fans say its the best tone, then you sir are disqualified.

  • Loved it. Would have been in heaven to hear this live.

  • @Darren9077 Darren be SURE to catch the other cuts I have from this tour.... especially the LAST SHOW... Satch was in HEAVEN watching Leslie light up the stage!

  • @depper Thanks very much. I definately will.

  • thats no slouch bass player either, thats stu hamm! hot band...

  • shame its so crappy sound but thx anyway

  • @tokigifoten Hey check my channel. I actualy have this song in with better audio. Its not the entire song, but what I DO have is better audio, check it out!

  • Joe & Leslie are using similar guitars, undoubtedly both are the same brand, and are not guitars I've ever seen either of them using before. Was this a promotion for the guitar company?.What guitars are these?

  • @lazur1 Hey Laz, those are both Dean Leslie West Signature guitars which is in a class by itself. No promotion. Actually Joe purchased one and surprised Leslie with it onstage. A true sign of respect among the legends.

  • @depper For the careful Rock historian/obvserver, those Deans were modeled after the old Les Paul Jr. that Leslie West is known for the World over.

  • @depper Thanks. I don't understand what you mean by Dean Leslie West Signature guitars being in a class by themselves. Obviously, they sound just fine, but in a class by themselves? I don't hear anything in this performance that i haven't heard from these guys with other guitars.

  • @lazur1 Thats because this is a video. When heard live, these guitars are amazing. Read the comments here from those that actually attended the concert. These are top notch guitars. You'd have to see them and hear them live to understand, thats all I can tell you.

  • @depper Sure, but I'm comparing to other stuff on similar videos. I have no doubt that these are amazing, top notch guitars, but that's not the same as being in a class by themselves. There are a lot of fantastic guitars out there.

  • @lazur1 Considering they are playing TWO of the ONE HUNDRED made, I'm telling exactly what Im telling you, they are a step above. American Made. Solid mahogany body. 5A flame maple top. Vintage two-tone burst. Super hot custom wound DiMarzio humbucker specific to this guitar called the MOT. Trust me when I tell you its a work of art, and Ive seen and played MANY a guitar.

  • LW "Anniversary": Nice flame top. LW "Signature" (Joe here): the model limited to 100: Less attractive black-edged top. LW "Standard" : Virtually the same guitar. Also a white LW "Standard". Leslie's here has 2 pickups: LW "Soltero". 4 of the 5 models aren't limited editions. White Standard's on Amazon for $699. Maybe a good value, but not innovative or hand made.

  • @lazur1 Sorry, Anniversary's a quilted top.

  • @lazur1 More corrections: 1/The Anniversary's even more limited than the Signature. 2/There are some new LW Standards out there for as low as $649.

  • @lazur1 Yes, you don't like the guitar, that's ok, can't please everyone.

  • I like the guitar, I disagree w/the description "in a class by itself". Great axe for the $..("Standard" version, $649, less-pretty top but same tone), but it's an old-school, mid-level, cost-cutting design. "A cut above" what?: Every guitar's a cut above some guitar, & a cut below some other guitar. Surely you don't mean it's the best guitar you've ever seen, in this era of hand-made deep-tenon set necks, direct-coupled, multi-coil-tapped pups, etc. Even some other Deans are built better.

  • @lazur1 LESS is MORE sir. Seriously, there's a reason why you ARENT called Mr West or Mr. Satriani.

Now, shut up, listen to the legends, and stop trying to rate guitars. Nobody cares, if you havn't noticed :)

  • You didn't responded on topic: "A cut above" WHAT? I'm not talking only about extra features, (tops that don't have that nasty black edge), but things that make a guitar more solidly constructed & resonant. (You don't care, many do.) I guarantee you when LW needs a great axe, he uses his "Jet", his "Quicksilver" , his "Pearlcaster", or his hand-made "LSR"s, even if they don't have his name on them, even if he had to pay for them. On videos without West, Satch never plays this guitar.

  • wild!!! master axe-men at work!!!

  • Whoah... 2:56 : Satriani with the text-book S.R.V. lick! It just seems odd to me to think of Satriani listening to S.R.V. enough to pick up a lick - the two are just so far apart in their styles. But, I guess Satriani didn't get as good a he is by not trying to absorb as diverse a pool of talent as he possibly could.

  • ...sorry, not 2:56. It's closer to 3:01

  • @BloatedSensations That´s an Albert King lick.

  • @darknode1995 Originally, sure. But, listen to Satriani's phrasing. That's not where he got the lick from. That's pure S.R.V.

  • @BloatedSensations 3:01, at least those relatively slow first 8 notes, are right out of Clapton's "Bluesbreakers" period. Maybe that flurry right after is SRV.

  • love the subtle entrance of the drummer at 0.55.. doof doof doof BOOM.lol

  • Leslie West. The National Shrine of Guitar Tone.

  • They came to VA. What an awesome concert...

  • remeber this moments: satch with a les paul and a dean.......... maybe sometimes with a stratocaster........

  • Cool! I've been thinking lately wouldnt it be sweet to see Satch and Vai playing something other than their Ibanez. Nice!

  • @fleafarteasy man it's been 3 long years since G3. We're long overdue for another.

  • @ShadowLancer128 Heard anything about a tour; who would be on it? I havent. Luv to go to one seen Satch and Vai on separate occasions.

  • Joe bought a Dean Leslie West guitar as a tribute to Leslie so they can play the same guitar together on stage ..how cool is that..two genuine human beings, kudos

  • @wisesatyr72 he didnt buy one it is Leslie's

  • @lumaric01 No Lumaric, Wise is correct. Joe bought a Dean Leslie West Sig specifically to play with his idol onstage. In fact, Joe & entourage kept it secret until just before they went onstage. It was a first class thing, one of the humblest moments I've ever seen on a Rock stage between two rock legends.

  • Oh man, it is haarrddd to stand on stage with the Professor. Love you Leslie but damn.

  • Gibson rep came up to Leslie West in the NAMM booth as he was showing off his signature Dean and said "Hey, we were thinking of doing an LW sig model" Leslie told him "That's great, but your 40 YEARS TOO LATE!" Haha, Owned. ;)

  • Thats one sickest jams I've ever seen!

  • first time i heard JS play blues..

  • I think it's sad that gibson won't give leslie west a sig LP Jr. He had to go to Dean... ugh. Deserves better if you ask me.

  • @superlou1s So true Lou except for one thing, these Deans sound SO AMAZING LIVE. Dean did LESLIE right. Dean rose above anything they've ever done. This guitar is pure quality, and just on another level.

  • @depper- That may be, but i wish gibson had just honored a long time player y'know?

  • @superlou1s No doubt, you are right. No player alive has been synonymous with Gibson then Leslie West. Leslie West and Les Paul Jrs were the Adam & Eve of hard rock.

  • Hot damn - they're having seroius FUN !

  • And that's the whole reason I started playing guitar. Blues.....

  • which concert was this at? i think i was there

  • so nice!!! theres a satch band! and where is the Ibanez JS!

  • pure legands

  • Hot licks! Emotive.!

  • yaa this is the first time i heard Leslie.. but i agree with depper that guy is def. all about tone, pretty chill.. after you learn metal stuff on gtare.. kinda makes you wanna play something other than hours of moshpit sounding stuff haha so im appreciating the blues more now and startin to pick up on it

  • holy shit joe lost all his hair

  • @ 6:44 leslie west was like, how is he doing that? lol

  • LOL Leslie was just feeling it... just like Joe was feeling Leslie in the 1st half of the song.

Noone one elnjoys good guitar tone better then Leslie. Leslie has been dubbed the "King of Tone" for a reason. ;)

  • so true, i was never a huge fan of leslie's but he is an amazing guitar player and vocalist

  • Amen! Hey you might appreciate this. Check my profile for a HIFI version of this song. Its only the 1st 5 minutes but it has better sound quality. It'll give you an even better appreciation for both their guitar tones ...

    Rock on bro!

  • I never realized how much leslie has influenced the tone of it all . I love those pulls Brian may comes to mind . For the tremlo eh

  • What is name of this song?

  • Stormy Monday

  • It's called respect, not a concept easily understood for those under 30. Joe's even playing a Leslie West signature guitar, no doubt he spent countless hours listening to him when he was young........

When you're playing with Jimmy Page in your dreams do you tell him he's sloppy? tell Jimi he's out of tune?

Satriani is having a blast just being that close to that tone.

  • i love that whenever two guitarists are mentioned battles ensue over who is the best amongst them and all their contemporaries :D.

its like when someone mentions a good zombie killing weapon, someone else always has one ready to top it.

  • Dig it, it's like in "Stand by Me" the kids argue over who would win a fight, Superman or Mighty Mouse???

  • dude who cares? its blues! its just about bringin what u got and makin somethin of it!! theres no wrong way to do it! :)

  • West kicks Satriani's virtuoso's ass... Satriani thinks only about notes and velocity, West goes deeper

  • KNOW WAY BACKWARDS MAN!!!

  • Personally I thought they played together beautifully. I think an apropo name for them could be Thunder & Lightening. The strange thing is, even though their styles are polar opposites, they play together with such incredible passion and respect for each others individual style. Like they've been playing together for 20+ years.

  • yeah guess satch's more technical than blue?

  • I thought Satch played with soul... Leslie just brings that out of anybody. But if you are going to invite Leslie West onstage you had BETTER play with soul, because Leslie will make that guitar talk.

I thought their opposite styles worked very very well together, and brought something very stylish and new to a very old classic.

  • bro you have a lot to learn about joe man.

  • i hate this sort of one dimensional commentary. this is where Leslie lives .a great player to be sure but one who would struggle in surfing with the alien or back to shalba ECT where Joes passion shines through joe paints with a wider pallet and as such does better in Leslie's world than Leslie would in his . deeper into blues but that where it ends joe goes deep;er into many aspects of the music .

  • so true bro good call.

  • lmao, guess he must have just showed up,duh????

  • leslie west looks like a man

  • Daym, give this man a cigar..... I think he's got it!

    Noob. :)

  • Leslie West is a man

  • West still got the perfect tone, it didn't change since the early days.

  • naughty naughty joe, now ibanez aren't going to be happy seeing you playing a dean now are they?

  • Baah. The record/gear companies dont own the player. If it werent for players like Leslie West and Joe Satriani, companies like ibenez would be producing waffle makers or some such silliness. Its the player that make the company.

Any intelligent folk would conclude Joe did this out of respect of one of the hard rock guitar pioneers, someone Joe clearly considers an influence.

  • Thats not a Dean! thats a Gibson Les Paul Junior!!

  • wrong.its a dean

  • Ya I know douche.I said that.

  • no you didnt DOUCHE! u said

''Thats not a dean!,thats a gibson les paul junior!!''

  • Look at ALL of the comments you cumguzzling piece of shit!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I guess that is a Dean! WOW!!!!

    My bad...

  • Hey Brib, do you HAVE an assclown hat, or are you REALLY an assclown. Don't answer that, found the answer on my own, thank you.

  • Your welcome

  • lol. oh the horror lol

  • was this recorded in Minneapolis?

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is very classy very special,

leslie West is a living legend!

Satch loves him too you can see it in his reverence,

The love on stage manifested itself in a great Jam!!!!!

    premium magic here.

  • Joe looks good for 52. So does West.

Scale runnin is okay. But give me that one note at the right time with the right vibrato anyday. Joe got to work on his! if they are real OLD then I must be too and before u know it so will you.

    Rock's eternal. You'll see!

  • i agree with depper .... shredding is just fast shit.... so what..... it has no soul....

  • yeah I agree too Satch n Leslie West rules!

  • some shredding does have soul ,but mainly it not about soul it about creating emotion through a dynamic .the blues is very different the mechanics are different and the purpose is different, no better no worse just different . I feel no need to deride one or the other .you dont like it fine.but you dont have to run down what you clearly dont understand either .

  • idiot this was in kitchener at centre in the square

  • Here is the best G5 lineup ever, no more shredders:

    Gary Moore

    Leslie West

    Billy Gibbons

    Tom Scholz

    Ted Nugent

  • Agreed. Shredding has done NOTHING to advance rock n roll.

    back to the basics

  • yeah shreading is for cheeses!

  • well ur missing the idea, satch created g3. its his band.

  • i would regard moore as a shreder

  • Is this in Montreal at the Metropolis?

  • i was there the 4 row toward the right

  • i was there

  • Yeah!! Starting at 6:42 when Satch starts playing some real cool blues licks. Mr. West comes over and is thinkin' your playin' some cool shit right their youngster. LOL!! Respect to both of these incredible talents.

    Appreciate the Upload

  • Youngster? Joe is 52. i agree with what ur saying about respecting both of them. but they both are real old and still playing like that. Which is amazing! lol

  • Yup youngster. Mr.West is 63. Thats eleven years older than Satch. It's the same for BB King. Everytime he plays with Clapton he refers to him as a youngman. In know way trying to demean him.

  • did you know if you add:

    &fmt=18

to the end of the web address, you can watch this in HI-RES??? Big difference!!

  • Hey all, BE SURE to catch the last jam of the tour right here (type this is search with quotes):

    "Satriani & West LAST SHOW"

These are some of the BEST blues I've heard in years. Great improv. By the two BEST.

  • there just made it a video response. Enjoy!!!

  • First time i've seen Satch with a guitar like that!

  • yeah he was playing one of Leslie West's

  • @Upupupr no he bought one as to pay tribute west and played it as a suprize... :D...the videos on here some where.....

  • Satriani Rocks!! and Blues!!!

  • Amen bro!!!

  • TTRocka, a good place to start would be getting "Leslie West Live!"... you can snatch it up on Amazon. This is a killer CD of Leslie's modern style of play.

Also you might want to check my page for the last show Satch & West did, its labeled LAST SHOW.

  • oh but wait... you have to hear the clip of this song that I have before you rush to judgment. The clip I have Leslie sounds much much better.... let me try and find it...

  • Great TONE!!

    My vibrato bone is humming.

Two Lawnguyland boys makin it happen.

    Great clip.

  • OH YEA,

Just discovered this. Satch doesn't need any proping up neither does West, if you're old enough. But the solo from Theme For An Imaginary Western ( ...only the MOuntain Climbing version) is for my money the most melodic, well-composed pentatonic solo ever done ...and to top it off it ends with that harmonic whistle ...perfect. And that voice, just kicks ass. Love both these guys.

  • The hands down best tone I ever heard recorded was the "Dream Sequence" on 'Flowers of Evil'.

Mick Ralph "All the Way to Memphis" might be next.....or Steve Hunter at the end of L.Reed's 'Oh Jim'(Berlin).

Too bad Cream never recorded "Theme for.."

  • I totally agree, Bob. When I first heard Dream Sequence, I knew right then and there Leslie West had accomplished something new and different. Leslie took TONE & VIBRATO from guitar technique and turned them into WORKS OF ART, of the rarest form.

Leslie hasn't lost a lick. Never heard him sound this good live. I will post a slightly better quality version, its only 5 minutes of this clip, but its sterling audio quality.

  • Where does Leslie West play nowadays? Is he doing solo albums or what?

  • Leslie plays all over the world. His tours usually last 3 to 6 months. Typically he plays shows throughout Europe and the US. Tours to Japan are much rarer. His two month tour though with Satriani just ended, and I think it will go down as one of the GREAT rock tours. Both Satriani and West are at the top of their games, seeing them onstage together was like touring Rock n Roll Heaven.

In studio, Leslie has spent the last 18 years playing the blues, Leslie style, HARD & Heavy.

  • If you can afford it Bob, get the limited edition (100 minted). It looks like a museum piece and its the one Leslie & Joe is playing here. The sound that comes out of that guitar is something to behold.
