  • “You had $69500 when you started, you lost $29000, you’re still going home with $49500”

    Interesting math there.

  • Well... they all died

  • youll never hear questions like this today, not even jeopardy

  • I'll never believe Jack Barry's claim that he never knew that the game show was rigged!

  • God, this Van Doren dork was such a bad actor. He looks so fake in his mental anguish. Also, he's not as photogenic as Ralph Fiennes lead us to believe. Stemple, properly dressed anf groomed, would have looked a lot better than Van Doren.

  • @CreepyEyeFilms

I thought that was in here, although just in a different order.

  • Well they all died! XD

  • The only thing I don't like about this game (well, other than the rigging) is the "stop the game" option. It gives the leader an unfair advantage. I think the trailing contestant should at least be given a fair chance to catch up. IMO, the game shouldn't end until one contestant reaches 21 and the other fails to do so.

  • @jhillst They have an even number of rounds. What's so unfair about that?

  • I don't get it, I thought Stempel lost with the Marty question.

  • @CreepyEyeFilms both the doc and the fiction movie make you think that because stempel was upset that he was forced to dump on that question....in fact, both he and van doren were told to miss numerous questions in order to run up weeks of ties

  • @brabon1 That was so because of the 50s Tic Tac Dough had the same thing.

  • @CreepyEyeFilms That was probably just to make the movie more dramatic. If so, then it definitely worked.

  • Watching this video (and knowing the facts) some 50+ years later, it's obvious NOW that the contestants' mannerisms aren't "realistic" and that everything was, indeed, rigged. But I was 15 years old when the show aired, and it seemed legitimate to me (and my parents) at the time. Just goes to show how people -- even masses of people -- can be fooled and misled.

  • this si gay not evn in collor!

  • @MultiTrip7 it was 1957..very little shows had colour

  • Thanks for uploading this.

    Yeah can't believe those cheaters.

Wiping their smirks with a cloth when pretending to wipe the sweat.

    Can't look directly into camera.

  • Van Doren, christ....what a wanker.

  • 4:38 GOOD ANSWER - GOOD ANSWER

  • Wow...those guys are unbelievably brainy.

  • @SPOOKSTR It was all a scam. Look up both of the contestants.

  • This is all so fascinating on many levels. How naive people must have been. The answers to the questions are straight facts on specialized topics about which you either know or don't know. No amount of head scratching or agonizing allows you to get to it, because no logic or formula is involved. Just unbelievable.

  • Whats fascinating is that 54 years later people are just as naive and complacent, beleiving reality TV is unscripted and that Lady Gaga actually has talent.

  • Truer words were never spoken...and I am only in my twenties.

    Well said.

  • @MyOnlyFarph and that the moon landing was faked and the govt orchestrated 9/11, people don't know what books are these days, all the information comes from the internet.

  • @bphutchins Your funny :)

  • @MrTodd198126

    I believe that's spelled "you're" :P

  • @MyOnlyFarph That is so true. I can't stand Lady CaCa, nor reality TV unscripted or not....just as I refuse to watch the farce of a film called Quiz Show that so blatantly distorts the facts. I know it's not a documentary, but I always hate when Hollywood puts their own spin on a true story and has to alter the facts to make for a good movie.

  • No, not really. It's possible to recall straight facts by playing around with the topic in your mind. Info can be connected in the brain like song lyrics.

  • so was all this acting done by van doren with the henry VIII question?

  • nevermind its with every question. wow

  • Loved that quip from Stempel..."they all died"!

BTW, could the contestants hear the audience at all? I know they had the headphones on, but could they hear laughter or loud noise over Barry's voice?

  • I think both those guys, especially Herb Stemple, did a great job "acting" their way through it. Sure it's easy to point out now those little details of them faking it, but if this was 1957 and if we were watching it live as is, no way none of us would of been able to tell. Just like the rest of the public during that time, we would of been fooled. Thank you for posting this-GREAT TELEVISION HISTORY!

  • @BirthofCharlie Correction: Herb turned 30 in December 1956, not November.

  • It is impossible to determine subterfuge just by watching the game in action. Van Doren did appear to be over doing the meandering and his mutterings seemed meretricious.

The quiz shows of the 50s were just one exploitation of television in those days. Another example is Your Hit Parade. It claimed to be based on weekly best sellers, but they conspicuously withheld how they sourced their information. It leads one to think that a lot of 'hits' were manufactured via record company promotion.

  • Ralph Fiennes is way prettier than the real Charlie Van Doren

  • so there was no marty question?

  • Wrong. The question did exist.

  • The question was in the last game before this that resulted in another tie, although if Herb got it right, he would've won!

  • If you watch part one of this trio of videos you'll see the Marty question.

  • @thprfssnl1

It was just in the last video.

  • @thprfssnl1 See part 2.
