This is really spectacular!!! perfect title :) its alot like being in one of my dreams, you never know whats coming next :D *subscribes* Also, I am trying to compose but I've been hitting some blocks...any advice?
i am 12 years old and i am learning piano myself, i think that where u split into a faster melody made complete sense, it fit well with the music and the title of the song :) keep up the work!
I dont understand comments about how she should have composed this... its her music she can do whatever the F she wants.. whats wrong with the format lol
I personnally write my own music with piano and guitar but at a lower level, this brought tears to my eyes and thats all I need to now.
i compose music too and yours was really very good but the sudden change is just distracting and very bad.....i liked it before it went into that sudden change because the mood of the song just totally changed and thats not really a good thing....i understand the title is "dream" and there are different parts to a dream but it was too distracting having the moods suddenly change...but other then the middle of the song i loved it ^^
i don't think it was too bad to jump from one section to the other like you did, in a way it makes sense. it was not a WOW one but it's still nice.
just one thing: what made you title it "dream"? maybe it had no name till you had to name it anyway and it's a typical resource to use that kind of word, "dream", "desire", or maybe "happines" or whatever. you know, to make it seem a little more intresting =D
anyway i liked it, keep on doing what you love to do =D
this is fabulous all those critiques are from people too scared to compose outside of the traditional lines of theory and structure, this does exactly what it is titled to do.. takes you through a dreamlike journey, that was vividly portrayed to the listener through the entire duration.. that is what a true composer does.
its really nice..... i liked so much the style. Dont give attention to those "trolls", asking if you studied music theory. Really, for me they are just envious people.
Ima composer xD But i agree Totally with all the other comments. It stops in 1 song then starts in another. Really using the aba format is where your mena have the a relate to the b but your meant to have a link section. what you have done is skip from 1 to the other. You need a change where you can link. Say maybe A sudden fall from the first section all the way down to quiet. for the start of the b section. Not just a sudden switch
working in your transitions/bridges, those that connect your 1st 2nd 3rd themes/ideas together. Order your emotions... like my teacher says, "make a question and then give an answer", don't make question, question, question or answer answer answer... and don't go like from cold water straight to hot, go like from cold, to warm, then to hot :)
and when I mean by they are not mandatory, I don't mean you are supposed to ignore them completely, I mean you are supposed to follow the rules but not limit your emotions, expressions because of them..., in the end composers compose because of EMOTIONS not because of theory, theory is just a manual, and as she said If you haven't compose something then don't give an opinion. There are many composers but few compose with pure emotion and passion, in your case you're good but you should
your composition is good but from 1:37 (the way you go into your 2nd theme) isn't that great, it feels like going from a sad peaceful melody/theme into like a joyful super happy mood, so in my opinion I felt a little confuse, although I understand what pretty much you want to say, I can hear what you want to say.
In the other hand, theory is necessary and is a must I totally agree, I myself have conflicts with my piano teacher sometimes about it, but I believe rules are a guide but not mandatory
It has a really nice melody at the start, the second part is also nice, but comes a bit too suddenly. If a bit more is added to the first part, maybe the transition will be more smooth. Overall though, good composition, it has a very nice melody and is not too repetitive :)
Thats it. I have absolutely had it. All you people who are dictating her with music theory... Youre all have it all wrong!! Sure, i've never studied Music theory, as i am only 14, But i am a composer. Please, Music is an Art, and art shouldn't have rules. If Anyone does stand in the rules all the time, nothing will be new and exciting, and Music as an art will die.As human beings, Its the creative, new stuff that excites people. . Rules were made to be broken. Besides, lets see you do better.
This is a very beautiful composition. There could probably be a slightly more fluid transition into and out of the middle section, but even without the transition, it is a great piece to listen to. It reminds me of the background music for a film and makes my mind imagination all sorts of possible stories. Love it! =)
While parts of this are not "my thing" - do not listen to the guys telling you how to compose. Just do your thing :). If you do not like certain transitions then you don't and might fix it, if you do its not them to decide. :)
While its not "my thing" do not listen to the guys telling you how to compose. Just do your thing :). If you do not like certain transitions then you don't and might fix it, if you do its not them to decide. :)
You definitely have talent ....perhaps with greater training and maturity, you will have a better idea as to which themes to develop more, and where greater harmonic (or melodic) innovation may be required.
But the most important thing is to have an innate musical intuition - and I think you do have that. Best wishes!
Nice piece, its more of a improv than a melody I suppose. It expresses ability more than emotional development of the first theme. Now, What I mean to say is if you developed the sections with a clear theme and use say, sonata form this would be one hell of a better piece. You got something nice there would love to see you nail it with a stable theme. Very good. Thanks for the performance.
Don't be put off by other people's comments. The more you compose your own stuff, and also study other peoples music - the more your craft will improve.
Experiment as much as possible, and don't be afraid of doing things that other people think are wrong, so you can get 1st hand experience. However, do try to understand the theory (and the way other people do things as well as well) so you can get experience of this as well
Not bad, but I would try to concentrate my material, aspire to a Bachian perfection, making every note count, never repeating a measure just to take up time. Don't create motives that break up rhythm and try to integrate counterpoint into your works. The piano works great for that. The melody + arpeggio formula is old, explore new textures! You obviously seem to have a passion for this, keep up the good work and always strive for perfection!
Here's my opinion of music theory: music theory is the reverse engineering of artistic works by non-artists in an attampt to come up with rules for writting music. Future artists then get roped into the constraints of these rules and it hinders their creativity. Screw the "rules." The only rule is just write what you feel, write for yourself and if others like it then fine but if not,so what.
@gugaa84 Hello ! I appreciate all piano pieces because it involves lot of hard work, patience and creativity. For me, you composed quite well and will surely improve as you mature in your practice. Keep it up. Kindly check my piano composition for my sweetheart. Check my other vids too. Thanks
Have you studied music theory at all? I think you need a better understanding of overall harmonic structure. This piece is in ABA form with two completely unrelated sections. Each section, furthermore, has one incredibly simple, incredibly repetitive harmonic progression. Try mixing things up. For example, give us a basic theme or motive in the first section in tonic, then modulate to the dominant (or the relative major) and give us a development of the first theme. Just a thought
Thx for comment :) Yes i did studied music theory :) I wrote this composition already 10 years ago ( made just small changes befor I've puted this on youtube :)
@matacoz actually there are some things that sounds good and some other things that dont, and that's not subjective. despite that, THIS song sounds good and thats not a matter of opinion. what does, is if you like it or not, and it seems there is a few people that dislikes lol
@Gnomitolindo Actually somethings might sound good to you, but if I wanted I could press random keys and call it my song. That's just not very popular. In my eyes there are no rules to music; seem people trapped themselves with rules.
@TKDxMATT - theory is theory but what is important is that what shes written came form the heart and sounds good.
The contrasting b section i think was a good idea because as you said A is rather repetative but tbh it is good to throw you into a transe and then B is something u wont expect. also if ud be good in theory and be as posh as you try to sound you wouldnt say ABA but ternary :P i know its just an opinion but i wanted to show mine. ^_^ to the player - gr8 piece n gr8 playing
You've got talent...and the potential to become a very famous composer in the future. You have the charisma, and your able to portray much emotion into your music. If you keep this up, you will one day be able to touch people's hearts with your music.
Well I'm not a composer but I know music theory :) Personally I liked it, I just wish you could have used some transitions instead of just hopping into a another movement/dream. But thats just me :)
i never sad that I am composer!!! I would like to learn that! But are u a composer? How can you measure someone if you dont know nothing about composing? Everybody can say if they like my composition or not - that why I added this wideo here!!! I also appreciat comments from composers !!!
you may not look at yourself as a fantastic composer. but everyone who plays an instrument, you with your piano, or me with my guitar, knows what they want to hear.. but only some choose to create there needs for others to hear. so i believe you are a composer. and an amazing one at that, your piece was beautiful and i could never determine what emotion would flee from the sounds next (which i suppose makes the dream in the first place)
amazing! The bassline had nothing wrong with it. It was not raw to me. It was beautiful and the beggining and dreamlike parts could bring tears to peoples eyes! Well Done...
You can tell a melody was written by a musical ear when you can hear how it's going to go. i found myself humming along. try adding a bit more passion in your bassline. it seems a bit uhh. raw?
I enjoyed this. It wasn't at all based round a I-IV-V progression. And even if it was, there are MILLIONS of pieces in the western tradition that are indeed based on this progression. That doesn't mean that they're not original, but just that the progression is very satisfactory to our ears. There are only 12 notes per 8ve but the originality lies in what you do with them.
Excellent composition. Not quite original, but compositional-wise it beats most. Actually the switch to major had an interesting effect. Keep it up. Don't let other music influence your own musical language. At least not to where you're copying others. Take your own path and your music will be more appreciated.
I didn't say that you were copying anyone else, I just suggested that you don't. I've seen many original comps that are simply based on the 1-4-5 progression which completely lacks originality because it's so overdone. If you take ideas from someone else, don't take the WHOLE idea is all I'm saying. It's alright to have influence, just not to replicate another work. I'm not accusing you of doing it, I'm just trying to guide you into a suggested path.
Hey I love the piece, I write too, mainly piano pieces and I think we have a similar style- if I may flatter myself. I think your piece is very technically good and I love the different colours and moods. I found it moving and enjoyed your performance of it. Claire (Australia)
wow im surprised to hav actually found a unique piano comp on youtube unlike the other hundreds of new age bores. This is very good. I know i havent any music credibility at all on youtube haha but there seemed to be alot of ideas goin on in the middle section. I would keep it more simple with smoother transitions, but then again mayb im just simple minded haha

Don't be put off by other people's comments. The more you compose your own stuff, and also study other peoples music - the more your craft will improve.
Experiment as much as possible, and don't be afraid of doing things that other people think are wrong, so you can get 1st hand experience. However, do try to understand the theory (and the way other people do things as well as well) so you can get experience of this as well
Well done !

Beautiful piece!!!! I wish i could compose music... =)

Yes i did studied music theory! :) I wrote this composition already 10 years ago ( made just small changes befor I've puted this on youtube :)

@TKDxMATT
You can't tell someone how their own song should sound. There are no rules to music, what doesn't sound good to one may sound perfect to another.
matacoz 2 years ago 23
@matacoz actually there are some things that sounds good and some other things that dont, and that's not subjective. despite that, THIS song sounds good and thats not a matter of opinion. what does, is if you like it or not, and it seems there is a few people that dislikes lol
Gnomitolindo 1 year ago
@Gnomitolindo Actually somethings might sound good to you, but if I wanted I could press random keys and call it my song. That's just not very popular. In my eyes there are no rules to music; seem people trapped themselves with rules.
matacoz 1 year ago
@TKDxMATT - theory is theory but what is important is that what shes written came form the heart and sounds good.
The contrasting b section i think was a good idea because as you said A is rather repetative but tbh it is good to throw you into a transe and then B is something u wont expect. also if ud be good in theory and be as posh as you try to sound you wouldnt say ABA but ternary :P i know its just an opinion but i wanted to show mine. ^_^ to the player - gr8 piece n gr8 playing

Well I'm not a composer but I know music theory :) Personally I liked it, I just wish you could have used some transitions instead of just hopping into a another movement/dream. But thats just me :)
CatchTh3Wind 2 years ago
i think i see what you mean.. and music wise that would be a fault.
but if this song is really about dreams. i think i understand why its such a strange transition.
Dreams are very hard to understand. it can be a sad dream and imediatly become happy, and vise versa. or scary, then funny, you get the idea.
but oh well :)
JimmyBshaw 2 years ago
no offense, just because you can play the piano - it doesn't make you a naturally good composer
YFM 2 years ago
i never sad that I am composer!!! I would like to learn that! But are u a composer? How can you measure someone if you dont know nothing about composing? Everybody can say if they like my composition or not - that why I added this wideo here!!! I also appreciat comments from composers !!!
gugaa84 2 years ago
everyones a composer :)
you may not look at yourself as a fantastic composer. but everyone who plays an instrument, you with your piano, or me with my guitar, knows what they want to hear.. but only some choose to create there needs for others to hear. so i believe you are a composer. and an amazing one at that, your piece was beautiful and i could never determine what emotion would flee from the sounds next (which i suppose makes the dream in the first place)

You can tell a melody was written by a musical ear when you can hear how it's going to go. i found myself humming along. try adding a bit more passion in your bassline. it seems a bit uhh. raw?
nevertheless, not bad

I enjoyed this. It wasn't at all based round a I-IV-V progression. And even if it was, there are MILLIONS of pieces in the western tradition that are indeed based on this progression. That doesn't mean that they're not original, but just that the progression is very satisfactory to our ears. There are only 12 notes per 8ve but the originality lies in what you do with them.

Excellent composition. Not quite original, but compositional-wise it beats most. Actually the switch to major had an interesting effect. Keep it up. Don't let other music influence your own musical language. At least not to where you're copying others. Take your own path and your music will be more appreciated.
thphaca 2 years ago
What do You mean by: "At least not to where you're copying others"???
gugaa84 2 years ago
I didn't say that you were copying anyone else, I just suggested that you don't. I've seen many original comps that are simply based on the 1-4-5 progression which completely lacks originality because it's so overdone. If you take ideas from someone else, don't take the WHOLE idea is all I'm saying. It's alright to have influence, just not to replicate another work. I'm not accusing you of doing it, I'm just trying to guide you into a suggested path.

wow im surprised to hav actually found a unique piano comp on youtube unlike the other hundreds of new age bores. This is very good. I know i havent any music credibility at all on youtube haha but there seemed to be alot of ideas goin on in the middle section. I would keep it more simple with smoother transitions, but then again mayb im just simple minded haha
