...a real walk on the dark side...this...hysterical, maniacal, treacherous and oppressively dense...to borrow a phrase from earlier work..."the sun ain't gonna shine anymore."...if it ever really has for Scott...
@drstrangelight Yes, I went to Walker's Wikipedia page and i saw that after reading your comment. But we ignore when he'll finish recording this new album (we all know it can take many years. Walker's very perfectionist !). He'd also prepare an opera for 2012 !
Who could dislike this? For those who like his 60s' material his voice is still intact - even better than before in my opinion - and for those with a taste for darker material well the song speaks for itself! - Bottom line, no excuse to hit the dislike button!
This is the one with the "meat percussion", where they hit bits of meat. I love this album; didn't like Tilt, but it saddens me that this isn't taught in schools.
@spiderjerusalem100 Yeah, I have the same experience. I listened a lot to various metal genres, but music like this brings intensity and obscurity to an other level. Scott is an innovative musical genius.
its official. I AM BUYING THIS ALBUM. then im gona play it while im sitting in the dark at night with the door closed and by the end of the album i will see how badly soiled my pants are
A friend and I once listened The Drift at night in a foggy forest. I also recommend listening this music through quality headphones like sennheiser. The Drift will surround your state of mind and it won't let you go the first days after.
one of the best pieces of music ever recorded. im in love with scott walker. i didnt care too much for "and who shall come to the ball", its the first time i listened to something by him that was too mcuh for me. or too little. i dont know. i would love him to record something in the vein of climate of hunter.
I'm literally in love with 4:43 and the next 15 seconds, I could have listened to that forever if I had to all the aimlessness comes together for a moment. If only the song felt as full as that short period.
@Astronaughty03 I agree with you, that sure is a "magic" moment in the whole song... It feels euphoric to me, with a little taste of obscureness to it of course.
With that section, the rest seems empty, but doesn't that suggest that this is what Mr Walker meant to do? The effect of this song is to show the vulnerability of innocent people who ally themselves with evil - there is a dark inevitability to Clara's demise at the hands of the Italian people to whom Mussolini brought war, poverty and suffering. There is a parallel between Clara and Italy itself... This song tackles some big ideas: its not about sounding nice.
I just felt the same way when i first heard "the third" from Portishead. Well, "same way"... Scott's stuff is a lot creepier! Amazing how fright can slip through ears to heart.
He really must have smoked some crazy shit over the years. I like some of his later stuff ('The Electrician' is BRILLIANT, IMO.), but I just CANNOT accept this....this.....discordant noise and verbal ramblings as 'art'. I'm genuinely perplexed. I'm genuinely afraid for him. I'm going to forget that I ever happened apon this. I'm just going.to.FORGET.it. Fuck!
Once you've been through this, you're no longer the same person. And I think that's the biggest compliment you can make to a songwriter.

When I think we should wait for many years to have a new Scott Walker's album, it gets me sad ;-)

I listen to a lot of extreme metal, i mean REALLY heavy music and i have to say most of it doesn't sound as intense as Scott Walker's last 2 albums.

"Clara" is Claretta Petacci, Mussolini's lover; killed with him by the Italian Partisans

The only word that I feel sums up this album is 'malady'. The whole thing sound like the inner workings of a tormented mind.
