He was a hugely popular recording artist in his prime and one would think that a philanthropic show biz group in New York could fund a plaque for his grave if drawn to their attention !
This guy dies at 51 his wife buries him next to his mother (family name Schmidt), in an unmarked grave in the Bronx..They didnt even give Jack a stone to mark is grave
I can't get enough of this song. I would like to know who the drummer and the fiddler is. Aside from Smith and Gibbons there doesn't seem to be any info on the other band members.
I had this song on a 78. It was Ben Burnie and his Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra. Unfortunately I set the record down on the top of my rather large stereo and the lid fell down (dispite being held up by a spring) without warning and destroyed the old bakalite masterpiece. Thank you for posting this music.
RR...I love this song and "Whispering Jack" is SUPER in his rendition. I just love this CrAzY RHYTHM...soon the High Brow has No Brow......just GREAT! :))) Thank you so much..perfect start for a Saturday...Let me wish you a Lots of cRazY rhythm today!
Thank you to those that are listening to this 84 years later...you get a pat on the back :)

Walkin' along Broadway
Soon the high-brow
He has no brow...."

78s are made of shellac, not bakelite, which is why they can't be washed with alcohol.

Thank you for posting those tunes from the time before I was born.
Now I can get a feel what my grandma used to listen to.
Good show!

Love this rendition...fun fiddles after the vocal! Great syncopation, what's the use, I've gone crazy too!

To sing like whispering Jack Smith, you would have to have part of your lungs destroyed by by mustard gas in WW1.

His acoustical recordings were also pretty good, but Jack came into his own with the new Electrical mic's...

I think 'Whispering' Jack Smith was absolutely wonderful.
He had a fantastic way of singing a song, with a voice and interpretation that was totally unique to him, and such a pleasure to listen to.
I have several 'HMV' (78's) of him and some re-issued recordings on C.D.
Many thanks for posting.

Big cheer for this big hit, albeit from back when. Five cheers from over here in West Egg
gone by.

...and you West Eggers would know!
Say "hi" to to my pal Klipspringer--think he's still crashing at Jay's joint.

Yeah, well now you have to put up with a new subscriber. And after spending 6 months in Vermont in '71, I know how you love solitude. I
am more than a little surprised to find so many of my father's favorites on your channel. He'd sing 'em. I'd hide in the woods.

Heh, heh...should have been good for a few merit badges.
Now, if your dad sang just like Whistling Jack I'd have put on a show!
