Maybe pen and teller should read the latest on the efficacy of hypnosis for medical purposes before they decide to do another bullshit episode that is layered in its own amount of ignorance and bullshit on that use of hypnosis.
Yes most stage hypnosis does rely on extroverted people acting like idiots for the benefit of the audience and some hypnotists and hypnotherapist make outlandish claims that can’t be backed up scientifically, but when it comes to pain management and other things hypnosis works very well.
I like pen and tellers show. However they are not experts on everything (as they claim and sometimes they are just arrogant pricks) but I can tell you hypnosis does work. Look up the history of medical hypnosis especially david elman before chemical anesthetics and you will know the truth that the mind can effect the body in various ways as they are part of the same system. (no amount of just pretending and using your imagination can make it where a limb can be amputated sans drugs)
Ok of what I am reading sniperdoc is more or less correct. Hypnosis may help for some people for some problems. And like other practices the reasons are not fully understood. That is the fun of science the need for more testing and seeing what and how something works.
So it can help with people overcoming 'minor' pains. And can help some people focus better to quit whatever habit they have. But as far as I can find I have found nothing about any major surgery that relayed only on hypnosis.
@vampirehunter42 Actually (and meaning all due respect) I think you're wrong, saying that it works for some people to help in some problems, it's like trying to "cure" alcoholism by praying, you can pray (or in this case hypnotize yourself) all you want but you still have to be fully aware and do your best effort for it to work, things don't JUST happen.
@MrKaozKaoz Note is said "may help". Yea I ran out of room there. And was unable to get into more detail. It is more of less like what they say in the 12 Step episode. While some thing do work as a crutch for some people it would not work for everyone. As with your example, for some people they can use "prayer" as their crutch. But at the end of the day they helped themselves but say it was the crutch that helped them.
Wait we are both on the same side of this. Why are we fighting? ;)
What pisses me off about most of these Penn and Teller issues isn't really the issue but the people who could get hurt.

But when you start to profit off of people with serious medical disorders or people with CANCER, then just as Penn said, you are the bottom of the barrel, scumbag piece of shit.
I'm surprised Wendi doesn't wear a suit, top hat and cane and travel around in a horse drawn wagon
@OcoryustheBold I've always said, that if someone is as stupid as to give money to any of these opportunist assholes, then they deserve whatever happens to them.
"... all the way to birth, and we let the mind come up with all the memories, the feelings, the emotions asociated with that." There it is folks, from Wendi's own mouth. She fairly admits that hypnosis is nothing more than playing pretend. Not that there's anything wrong with playing pretend -- as long as yopu know all you're doing is playing, like those college students were doing onstage.
penn and teller are hypnotist themselves, it is a performance art. They are just exposing the bull shit hypnotist that go above and beyond and make hypnosis sound something like its not. Like a dentist saying they can performe open bypass surgery. Its simply suggestibility. Its a fake word, hell you can hypnotize yourself right now to be hungry. I would know, I do street hypnosis as a hobby, and hypnotize my friends at a party. Long story short, its only a trick of the mind.
@PowerArsenal So, you're telling me that people that actually have surgery performed on them while hypnotized, that are 100% awake and fully aware of their surroundings, isn't hypnosis? How about people that actually have their phobias cured? A 10 hour class that you pay 80 dollars for to do "street hypnosis" vs a 410 hour course that teaches you the proper word patterns and even proper techniques to bring about healing of the mind have major differences.
@PowerArsenal There's a major difference between a "Hypnotist" and a Clinical Hypnotherapist. Dentists in the 1950's actually used Hypnosis instead of narcotics, anesthetics, or other methods to do their work without the patient feeling discomfort. But, if you took a REAL hypnotherapy course instead of learning from stage hypnosis books, you'd know that.
@PowerArsenal The situation is this: If people have a beneficial response, no matter WHAT the method, hypnosis, penis pump, cialis, etc what does it matter the method used? There's not a single documented case of a person dying from being hypnotized. There's plenty of cases of people dying because they committed suicide or just plain dying from taking medication, so your choice...
@amarssadal i get that. but they kept saying its not "real" and i still belive it is!!! i knew it doesent have super powers. but it did not quite disprove the whole phenomina ( spell check) so . i stilll think its "real" its just not a super power!!! i need more convincing lol
If anyone needed proof one way or another they could just videotape someones entire day and then like a week later ask them to remember that day with hypnosis. Compare the results and run the test different times with different people.
However, the thought of someone having a placebo orgasm definitely has my attention...
People even convince themselves there's an invisible man in the sky controlling the entire Universe! Why should anybody be surprised that people are open to suggestion and self-delusion?
@SSedmak God doesn't only control the universe, he created it. why does invisibility constitute non-existence. i dont see radio/TV signals in the sky but they exist there. God isnt invisible, you just cant see him with YOUR two eyes. your limited by the world that is right in front of your face, never looking beyond the horizon. you should study religion more before you discount it.
@kanepeteysam You mean he should study theology. I think if SSedmak were to critically study the history of Christianity and Judaism, and how that context relates to the texts, (s)he would come to the same conclusion: that it is a ridiculous thing to believe.
@wojovox Those who believed the teachings of elders (dangerous places, methods of hunting) and obeyed orders had an advantage compared to those how used to risk and tread unknown ground. In essence they survived.
For the nature of belief I suggest reading a good dictionary/encyclopedia
I totally agree with those two jerks. What they show ISN'T hypnosis at all. But it doesn't mean hypnosis doesn't exist. It's total ignorance of history of medecine. Read Chertok's "hypnosis", they best introduction to history of serious hypnosis. They are fake, their strategy is to show the worst, the shame of what claims to be hypnosis and conclude that hypnosis is total bulshit. They don't proceed scientificly, and they are perfectly ignorant. They are doing a show for money, that's all
@LiamNeesonsDick I guess you don't have a very good knowledge in medecine, psychiatry and history of medicine. Hypnosis, as a state of consciousness is as real as sleep. And inducing such a guided active sleep is a very old technique, and very efficient in many cases. But since the 70ies, many people started to claim they can use hypnosis for many purposes, but what the actually do is a kind of stupid relaxation or simulation of hypnosis, totally fake.
As you want. In front of such an argumentation, I must convert. But one day, if you have a desire to get a little bit less stupid, you can for example find serious sources of information and get knowledge from science. Penn and Teller are funny, but they make a business out of talking straight. They don't make nuances. Good for them, it's TV, it's entertainment. It's not a source of knowledge. But it's so much easier than reading books. So please, don't read. Stick to watching Tv
Hypnosis is actually about using imagination and words (and thought associations) and other kind of stimulations to make the other fall into a state of consciousness close to sleep but still aware of few incoming informations like for instance the hypnotist's voice. Doctors even used to use drugs to induce the state as ether or chloroform. But we now prefer to use language and imagination to induce this state that is not imagined but physiologically real and observed by brain imagery.
Can someone please explain how stage hypnosis is fake? They didn't really do a good job. Were they all acting and willingly knew what they were doing was just for show/being paid to act like idiots?
I don't get why anyone would get on stage and do that shit willingly.
@ChickenParmHero It's not that hypnosis is fake. It's that people are fooled into thinking what it is and other people profit from that. Hypnosis is actually achieved only if the subject agrees to everything he is "commanded", there is no mind control. It can be used, for example, to stop you from chewing pencils or recall presumably forgotten details from recent events. The later is used by the police. Hypnosis cannot, however, control your body and make your penis grow.
@bgpivoter It's quite right even though I wouldn't have said that in the same words. But anyway, don't forget that hypnosis and psychotherapy (this name was invented to rename hypnosis more than a century ago) are technics to cure using the mind, and not only to cure the mind. In the XIXe century, we had not yet forotten that they are ways to cure the individual physically and psychologically through the action of the mind. It's psychosomatic art, and not only psychology.
@7:58 ... "The sad part is that Cindy is not just having bullshit fun like a college student in the stage show. To her it's real."
You can't have it both ways: Either hypnosis doesn't work, but then it can't hurt either. If it's real to her, then hypnosis is real, or at least, potentially useful.
@sonofmerowing You misunderstood. He meant that Cindy BELIEVES it's real, not that it is, while the college students recognized - even *during* the supposed hypnosis - that what they were being told they saw/felt/heard wasn't actually happening. In addition, the stage show was just about "(bullshit) fun" while Cindy's perceived experience was something frightening, painful, depressing, perhaps horrific and could potentially be seriously harmful emotionally and/or psychiatrically.
Our ability to convince ourselves something is real when it is not, a person simply thinking, sans self-persuasion, something is real when it is not (e.g. psychosis) or plain imagination or fantasy has NOTHING to do with hypnosis. And it proves absolutely NOTHING regarding hypnosis/hypnotherapy being real, able to cure cancer, give you a bigger dick or be "potentially useful" as you so idiotically claim, and certainly not through the BS mechanism Wendi describes of hypnosis affecting cell death.
@tehlinebeginstoblur I do understand, but hypnosis - as far as I understand it - is about messing with beliefs in precisely that way. In some cases, potentially including Cindy's, that might be harmful. In other cases, it can be very useful, for example when dealing with phobias. As far as I can tell, they don't really have a problem with hypnosis so much as with stage hypnosis and with certain unscrupulous practitioners, so my comment was a bit beside the point.
@sonofmerowing Just because you think something is real, doesn't mean it is real. It is true that therapy doesn't work unless the patient embraces it; but Wendi and her ilk are prescribing psychological cures for physiological problems. Therapy only works to resolve MENTAL and EMOTIONAL problems, not somatic illness.
@cyanmanta I never said anything to dispute this, in fact, I completely agree with you. I only have an issue with the way the episode presents its argument: First it is claimed that hypnosis is not real via the example of stage hypnosis. Then it is claimed that hypnosis can cause people to perceive fantasy as reality in a way that potentially causes psychological harm. How can hypnosis be unreal, yet so powerful?
@cyanmanta Two points are being argued in the video: 1) Stage hypnosis is fake 2) Some hypnotherapists are dangerous frauds. I agree with both of these statements, but neither of them means that all of hypnosis is bullshit. To be fair, the episode never claims such a thing as far as I know. It just seems to me that, for effect, they merged together these two points which might convince some people that all of hypnosis is useless.
@cyanmanta But anxiety disorders ARE mental problems. They are theorized to be promoted by a dysfunction in your autonomic nervous system, but ultimately the end-result is the subjective feeling of panic. Hypnosis in some form (probably NOT pretending to go back to your birth, lol) may help people to readjust their reactions to the activity of their sympathetic nervous system. They should at least try and scientifically test it with randomized clinical trials, if it hasn't been done already.
@leviathan85 Perhaps. As long as that patient has at least tried to find a somatic answer to her problem, there's not really any harm in trying to embrace hypnotherapy. It is, however, still irresponsible of Wendi if she hasn't urged her to see a doctor first. It's also irresponsible of her if she is planting false memories in her patients.
@cyanmanta I did some research and there has been some modest benefit to hypnotherapy for a variety of mental illness. I agree with you 100% on the things you just said.
this is pure bullshit. Hypnosis does not work like that at all, and no penn, I know whats going on in their heads because I have been hypnotised myself. They are faking it.
Wow, I read about this episode somewhere and the downright hateful comments to it alone are pretty off-putting. Sure, you have your extremists in any field, but hypnosis can and does work depending on HOW you try to use it. All hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis and can be useful in therapy and fun. For example it won't cure cancer, or make your penis bigger, but it can help you mentally become more positive about those things so you can cope better or feel better about your body.
the guy, penn, i hate how he keeps repeating shit, bullshit, shitpal, this is shit, it's oviously shit, and realated shit things, just like an internet troll.
ugly people are desperate and often fool themselves into believing dumb shit so their lives dont suck as much. prepare to see ugly people in nearly every episode of bullshit
Well, if you believe that hypnosis helps. And because you believe that it helps, you change whatever behavior you are trying to change. Then does hypnosis work?
lets say you go to a person who is a pharmacist you want medicine from her. he gives the pills while you are suffering cancer. what if she is not what she claimed to be? probably you will die in a painful way by wasting your time and money while you need to take the medical treatment. that is absolute fraud. all hypnotist jokers must put in jail, unless they make clear that they are selling bs.
@Hikk0 : Most likely they deceived her. The camera crew probably said they were going to promote her or do a story on her or something... Deception, lying, scheming... it's what reporters, media and hollywood does best. The bullshit crew not doubt produce their own amount of bullshit to get the story done. It's called human nature. The premise of the show is corrrect, of course,, at least in this case and many others, but remember, ratings count above everything else. It's a business.
@eimb1999 They address this in 1 of the episodes (Family values?), and they say (however reliable that is) that they are honest to everyone about the nature of their show. I think they'd have to be, because you have to sign release forms/a contract anyway and there the shows name would be mentioned. I think these people really believe their point of view is perfectly rational, untouchable and beyond criticism. Some people also decline because they've seen the show (see Signs from Heaven).
Though there was a chance that they weren't completely forthcoming with how they intended to use the footage. They probably edit it to emphasise any possible "bullshit" and remove anything that may suggest otherwise, thus producing a biased view. I'm not saying that there aren't nutters out there, but it's easy to modify things to suit your intent while drawing up tricky contracts. Either way, hypnosis isn't bullshit, expecting miracles from it is.
@eimb1999 You know what they say. Any exposure is good exposure.
It's not that hard to explain that Penn and Teller doesn't know what they're talking about while in the mean time your business just received an ad that ran on national television and will be on DVD forever.
Also look at the show for Martial Arts. One of the people that they did a story on has a YouTube channel. He even mentioned something about BS on one of his videos. But it should show up in the suggested column. He may talk.
Holy fuck this is awesome! So if I imagine or am hypnotized about growing muscles I don't have to go to a gym and lift weights; I will be getting ripped sitting on my couch listening to a cd, cool!
Thumbs up if watching Penn and Teller makes you very happy, almost euphoric, and thumbs up if watching this was a great experience.

cyanmanta 7 months ago
@cyanmanta I never said anything to dispute this, in fact, I completely agree with you. I only have an issue with the way the episode presents its argument: First it is claimed that hypnosis is not real via the example of stage hypnosis. Then it is claimed that hypnosis can cause people to perceive fantasy as reality in a way that potentially causes psychological harm. How can hypnosis be unreal, yet so powerful?
sonofmerowing 7 months ago
@cyanmanta Two points are being argued in the video: 1) Stage hypnosis is fake 2) Some hypnotherapists are dangerous frauds. I agree with both of these statements, but neither of them means that all of hypnosis is bullshit. To be fair, the episode never claims such a thing as far as I know. It just seems to me that, for effect, they merged together these two points which might convince some people that all of hypnosis is useless.
sonofmerowing 7 months ago
@cyanmanta But anxiety disorders ARE mental problems. They are theorized to be promoted by a dysfunction in your autonomic nervous system, but ultimately the end-result is the subjective feeling of panic. Hypnosis in some form (probably NOT pretending to go back to your birth, lol) may help people to readjust their reactions to the activity of their sympathetic nervous system. They should at least try and scientifically test it with randomized clinical trials, if it hasn't been done already.
leviathan85 6 months ago
@leviathan85 Perhaps. As long as that patient has at least tried to find a somatic answer to her problem, there's not really any harm in trying to embrace hypnotherapy. It is, however, still irresponsible of Wendi if she hasn't urged her to see a doctor first. It's also irresponsible of her if she is planting false memories in her patients.
cyanmanta 6 months ago
@cyanmanta I did some research and there has been some modest benefit to hypnotherapy for a variety of mental illness. I agree with you 100% on the things you just said.

Well, whether she wanted to or not, Jill just had a lesbian sexual experience with Wendi. Wow.

The hypnosis music is totally based on the soundtrack to Hitchcock's Vertigo.
cyanmanta 7 months ago
this is pure bullshit. Hypnosis does not work like that at all, and no penn, I know whats going on in their heads because I have been hypnotised myself. They are faking it.
gulbirk 7 months ago
Wow, I read about this episode somewhere and the downright hateful comments to it alone are pretty off-putting. Sure, you have your extremists in any field, but hypnosis can and does work depending on HOW you try to use it. All hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis and can be useful in therapy and fun. For example it won't cure cancer, or make your penis bigger, but it can help you mentally become more positive about those things so you can cope better or feel better about your body.

lets say you go to a person who is a pharmacist you want medicine from her. he gives the pills while you are suffering cancer. what if she is not what she claimed to be? probably you will die in a painful way by wasting your time and money while you need to take the medical treatment. that is absolute fraud. all hypnotist jokers must put in jail, unless they make clear that they are selling bs.

It's a business.
eimb1999 1 year ago
@eimb1999 They address this in 1 of the episodes (Family values?), and they say (however reliable that is) that they are honest to everyone about the nature of their show. I think they'd have to be, because you have to sign release forms/a contract anyway and there the shows name would be mentioned. I think these people really believe their point of view is perfectly rational, untouchable and beyond criticism. Some people also decline because they've seen the show (see Signs from Heaven).
Aegidia01 1 year ago 31
@Aegidia01
Either way, hypnosis isn't bullshit, expecting miracles from it is.
hauntedskin 8 months ago
@eimb1999 You know what they say. Any exposure is good exposure.
It's not that hard to explain that Penn and Teller doesn't know what they're talking about while in the mean time your business just received an ad that ran on national television and will be on DVD forever.
Also look at the show for Martial Arts. One of the people that they did a story on has a YouTube channel. He even mentioned something about BS on one of his videos. But it should show up in the suggested column. He may talk.
