I've been listening to Etta James since I was 16. Maybe because I'm a real lover of her music, I just never understood why they chose Beyonce to play her; they aren't cut from the same cloth. I thought Beyonce was absolutely terrible at the part. Beyonce has a nice a voice, don't get me wrong, but it's hardly soul piercing.

first of all Etta James and the people at cadilac records had to sign off and give approval to any copy righted materials and there is proven documentation that the company gave copy right permission for the movie to be made and the allowance of the characters to be viewed as they saw fit. Beyonce would have never been able to sing the song and record it for the soundtrack had copyright laws not been issued.

Jealous, wow. Songs get covered all the time, why not be flattered that she created such a classic? That's lasted the test of time??
Beyonce did a beautiful rendition (as was the original, of course) why not admire that instead of letting ego and the contanst need to be relevant get in the way.

@kylcam I totally agree with you. This is actually not even Etta James' song. It was originally done by Glen Miller and then Nat King Cole. The woman needs to take a step back a little bit.

WHAT!?! Etta is a hater. She didn’t even write the song; she just did a great job performing it. Beyonce is very classy; and at least Etta’s story was expressed through a movie by an esteemed/talented woman. Anyway, the First Dance was a historical moment for the President and his First Lady regardless of song and artist. Furthermore; just as Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush was; the Honorable Barack Obama is my President, because I am a proud American. (period)

But, my opinion is that, it is not Beyonce's song
It simply just doesn't belong to her
And since she didn't even ask permission to you use it (in a MOVIE in which the intire WORLD has access to)
So to sum all this up
I don't blame Etta for being 'pissed'

This song was originally written and sang by Ray Eberle and the Glenn Miller...search it up for yourself. Etta probably didn't ask permission to use it either....everyone thinks, oh I sing it better so it;s my song when in reality it's not

@LANYsmacker uhm, Beyonce didn't write Cadillac Records, she was ASKED to do the part. Whether or not the producers got permission isn't her fault.. and she is allowed to sing any song she wants to sing, just like you are...it's a free country..But anyways, Beyonce is making her famous again..no one knew anything about her in this generation until that movie..so Edna should be thankful, not hateful..and if you didn't know, she publicly said she was "just kidding" on this video, so she copped out

My comments in no way are meant to take away from Etta's original version of this song. It is beautiful and powerful and filled with soul. But for her to act out like this is simply sad and pathetic. For all of you just to jump on the bandwagon and dismiss Beyonce's tribute is equally sad and pathetic. Can you not just enjoy music in the various ways and methods it can be expressed by a multitude of people?

@ringmaat To be honest, even if she didn't have disease, I wouldn't blame her, it is normal reaction. Come1, if some1 would have sang Bey's song irreplaceable to president Obama she would have been upset and angry. It is normal reaction. It is hard to keep it cool, it is a once a lifetime chance. Plus Etta and her generation lived through segregation told where to eat and sit, (remember Rosa Park) never thought would live to see a black man becoming a President Of USA.

@ringmaat True, well said! But Etna has gone through a lot in her life as an artist and lately she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. If this has happened to Bey, she would reacted the same. It is very hard to keep your cool when you are old ( w/Alzheimer) and coming from an old school. IMHO
